LIVE VISUALS | Orbit for The World Cerebral Palsy Games

'Orbit' was created as large-screen video content, for the World Cerebral Palsy Games Closing Ceremony. It was created during workshops collaborating with participants with learning disabilities, to create a series of VJ Loops. The workshops used hands-on creative activities, to form the organic and texturised aesthetic of the clips. Basic stop-motion animation techniques take us on a circular journey of abstraction and rhythm.... A huge thank you to all participants who contributed to the creation of the piece. Created in collaboration with City Arts & County Youth Arts. Music 'Le Vol De La Chouette' by Laurent Danis, on a creative commons - non commercial licence. WORKSHOP | RedBull Media House, Salzburg

Rebecca Smith, Artistic Director of Urban Projections, worked at RedBull Media House, Salzburg, to give their lead design Team a three day intensive course in projection mapping and interactive media. The workshops were tailored to build on the strengths of the talented designers, and equip them with a full understanding of workflows and the technical skills required to create interactive projection mapped installations. Here's a little video blog from the Geowaltz installation earlier in the year.  A participatory project where we projected onto specially designed and fabricated perspex sheets.  The content was predominantly created through ipad apps, to design geometrical stills, which were compiled and mixed with figurative footage, and then mapped.  A big thank you to everyone that was involved, contributed and made it possible.

Live Projection Muralists Take Over an English Woodland | The Creators Project

'Into The Woods' is the first chapter in artist duo Stylus' newest projection mural escapades.

Into The Woods is the first in the series of ‘STYLUS Shorts’, a new chapter in the life of the projection mural escapades, between Rebecca Smith & Peter Barber.  The series explores an invigoration for craftsmanship and stripping work back-to-nature, whilst incorporating a juxtaposition of progressive digital projection & mapping techniques.

Into The Woods documents the experimentation, in a single evening, with temporary performances surfaces, in this case with shrink wrap, to produce a translucent and ephemeral 3d structure.  Playfully using the depth of the structure to create anamorphic imagery, the piece uses spray-painted image to ‘hold’ projection, effectively painting with light.

With a quintessential English woodland as the setting for the piece, Into The Woods collaborates with Sonic Artist Jimmy Power, capturing the environmental soundscape, and re-working it for sound design on the final video.

PROJECTION MAPPING | ‘Shift’ Light Installation

Based on the concept of the Phoenix, "Shift" is a light installation commissioned by the Royal Northern College of Music. It takes their iconic staircase and transforms it with bold, moving colour, pattern and light, playing on the industrial feel of the structure, emphasising sharp lines, abrupt connections and dynamic interactions of motion. The piece is made of sweeping swells & crescendos, which then drop back to minimalism, using the idea of resurgence, resurrection and return to life.

LIVE VISUALS | Backstage with BBC Concert Orchestra

Last week we collaborated with the Able Orchestra​ and BBC Concert Orchestra​ to create a live and reactive AV performance. We used multiple wireless Lemur controllers, hooked up to Resolume VJ Software​, to enable young disabled performers to control audio reactive visual parameters.  Geek heaven.

MAPPING INSTALLATION | Geowaltz

Urban Projections presented Geowaltz at Nottingham Light Night 2015.  Geowaltz is a projection mapped installation onto specially fabricated Perspex Sheets.  The content for the installation was generated with young people from local disability groups, using ipads and digital manipulation techniques.  Intricatly mapped across the surface of the perspex, it warps, dances and evolves with colour, shape and form.  Geowaltz was installed at St Mary's Church, in Nottingham's Lace Market, and saw over 3000 pass through the installation.

PROJECT | Beam

As Part of anti-bullying week, we would like to share ‘Beam’ a project created in collaboration with the amazing young LGBT groups of Nottinghamshire.  In an awesome series of guerrilla projections, the groups delivered their message of tolerance and respect…  A massive thank you to everyone who took part and helped with the project.

LIVE VISUALS | Vices Launch for Jimmy Choo

Urban Projections worked in collaboration with Contemporary British Artist Mat Collishaw, Dave Lynch and Lumen to create an incredible, projection mapped installation environment for the launch of the Jimmy Choo's Vices Collection at One Mayfair. Based on the incredible Naica mines in Mexico, created video footage was intricately mapped around the towering shards and crystal clusters. Light passes, pulsating glows and shadow effects were overlayed onto footage of tower blocks, rain and traffic to enhance the effect of light refracting through crystal shards. The evolving environment set the tone for a unique and striking evening, in which diners sat amongst the crystal metropolis to a lunch created by Mark Hix.

LIVE VISUALS | Vertex

We've been working on a new performance piece in collaboration with producer Jimmy Power.  Vertex is a live performance in which the audio and visual elements intertwine to create a mesmerising experience. Performed from within a gauze cube, audio-reactive visual elements mix with manipulated footage, to form mind bending depth and perspective. Vertex is currently touring unusual spaces in the UK and Europe.

GUERRILLA PROJECTION | Beam for Nottinghamshire Pride

For several months, we have been working with young people from all over Nottinghamshire, to represent the young LGBT community in an awesome series of guerrilla projections, for Nottinghamshire Pride.  Creating a series of AV loops which aim to deliver a positive message of tolerance and respect,  the loops were VJ’d live out on the streets of Hockley, beaming onto buildings, street furniture and the unexpected.  A live av set was also performed at Broadway Cinema to mark the event.  The loops will go onto make a short film which will act as a learning & presentation resource.  The project was funded by Nottinghamshire County Council.  A huge thank you to all the groups that were involved - WOW, Resonate and Outburst.

LIVE VISUALS | Beam for Nottinghamshire Pride

Over the past few months, we've had the pleasure of working with LGBT youth groups throughout Notts, towards a live AV piece which will be premiering at Nottinghamshire Pride. Just wanted to say a massive thank you and well done to everyone who took part.

We're VJing 'Beam', a live projection piece, in Broadway Cinema Cafebar for Nottinghamshire Pride from 4pm-6pm on Saturday. After that, we'll be beaming out on the streets of Hockley with the Light Cycle from 9.30pm. Drop down, say hello, and check out the amazing work done by local LGBT young people.
