I have so many Jennifer Fitzsimmons feels.

She probably took a sabbatical from teaching, because she’s going to fight this. She was pre-Olympic, she can beat some polyps.

But every practice and meet she’s with her team, encouraging them and helping them.

Slowly she starts missing practices. But she’ll be damned if she misses a meet. Then it’s only the home meets she can make.

Until it’s a week before the Division Championships and no one has seen Coach Fitzsimmons in a couple weeks. She’d never been shy about handing out her number but now the voicemail is full.

And so a group of her seniors, the first class she’d coached up from freshmen, go to her house. They’re all ready with scholarships and new records to tell their favorite coach about. But no one is home.

And none of the teachers can tell the students any news. Until it’s two days before the meet and a voice crackles out of the speaker system, announcing that a member of the faculty has died: Miss Jennifer Fitzsimmons.

Some of the students can’t make themselves compete, but as a whole the managed to narrowly win. And the trophy comes home to Sheldon High to be put into a display case next to a photo of everyone’s favorite teacher and coach.
