I think it should be discussed how in American media, a southern accent is nearly always narrative shorthand for “this character is dumb, belligerent, and racist”.
Progressive American writer: “Hm how can I immediately convey to the audience that they shouldn’t like this character, that this character is going to be an immediate, aggressive problem for the protagonists, that he opposes my bold and progressive story’s themes of peace, equality, and anti-bigotry? Oh I know, I’ll give him the accent that’s from the wrong half of the country, the evil half.”
