Very fair question, too. Yes, they're in an established relationship. They had the boyfriend talk at some point after Mack's bed got delivered but remained unused for a couple of weeks. With all the cuddling and sleepy kisses and waking up completely entangled every morning, it wasn't even a big revelation. It was the logical conclusion, really, and they both knew what the other felt before the words were said. It went like this:
They were lying in bed one sunny morning, arms wrapped around each other, Will's head resting on Mack's chest, Mack's chin on top of Will's head. It was warm and quiet and peaceful.
"I wanna tell you something," Mack said, "but I might be too shy."
"That's okay," Will said, "you can tell me later. I'll still be here."
A couple of days later, Mack came home to Will waiting with home-made, heavenly-smelling dinner. He dropped his bag by the door, kicked off his shoes, took Will in his arms and said, without thinking about it, "I think you're my boyfriend, and I'm so in love with you."
Will smiled, kissed him softly and said, "I'm glad you're catching on, and I'm so in love with you, too."
The condom talk was part of a series of long talks about sex. The birthday video was hot, and so was their reunion in San Jose, but at some point they had to actually talk about likes and dislikes, preferences, boundaries, etc. They got tested together, and they already knew they weren't going to be sleeping with anyone else at that point, so they decided to go without. Similarly, they agreed on a whole lot of other stuff, like the taking and surrendering of control, what toys they were willing to use, how mean they were allowed to get with each other, etc.
By the time Limited Control takes place, they're very familiar and comfortable with each other sexually. The lace panties were new, but the rest was thoroughly negotiated and, in part, tested. That's one of the best things about sex within an established, long-term relationship: It only gets better and better and better thanks to trust, familiarity, and a whole lot of experimentation.
