i like to follow the novelization that during the surviving marines last stand in medical when hudson was dragged down by a xeno bc in the book hicks shot down into the hole to hit hudson to kill him instead of letting him get taken to the hive.

he didn't want his squadmate to go out like that.

vasquez and gorman's death always get to me too. she had no respect for him as a leader bc he was very NOT qualified, he froze up that got a lot of marines killed, but at the end they went out together and it was ??? idk. the lighting. the acting. the visual. peak.

i love that hicks has access to pulse rifles, and he does use one, but he also uses an ithaca model 37 pump action shotgun that was passed down through his family for generations.

An unlit cigarette dangled between lips, swishing back and forth before the soldier plucked it out of his mouth, storing it back into the half pack tucked away in his breast pocket. He fixes Gorman with a look before turning away, snorting under his breath.

Sleep was usually never an issue for him. Hicks could sleep through the worst of it with ease but even he had his days of crippling insomnia when he was running on the fumes of coffee and smokes.

He still had nightmares, of gnawing teeth, slick black and long razor sharp tails poised for attack : abhorrent horrors as his crewmates were dragged into the darkness screaming for help that he could not provide.

He takes a shuddering breath from the memories that ran shivers down his spine and dropped the half drawn cigarette to the ground and scuffed the heel of his boot against it. ❝ Honestly, Commander, half of me thinks we're better off not knowing. ❞ that wouldn't stop humanity from pushing their luck, however, and nobody really believed what he really saw out there that day anyway.

Probably why WY had sent people to shut him up.

Hicks didn’t say much, it often was misjudged as being uncaring, but to those who knew him knew otherwise. He was silent, but observant, and Shepard’s injury didn’t go undetected to the soldier. ❝ You can argue with me if you want but either you go see the doc or I’ll carry you there myself. ❞ he lit his cigarette. That was a threat.
