“I’m curious on how you got roped into it in the first place, Detective.” Nat knew he didn’t have much of a family right then, but this seemed like grunt work and Christian was definitely not a grunt.

I don’t know how it is in the future but people often glance at beautiful things for a moment before moving on. You wanna know why? Because there’s an abundance of beautiful people and short attention spans.” Sara perched on the edge of Natira’s chair. “The most mysterious you, the more questions they’ll ask. Now, if you go the cleavage route, just know that if anyone gets hands go for the throat.”
“Got it. Show more cleavage.” Natira trusted Sara and all of her advice. Though they hadn’t gone on very many missions together-- not since the incident with Zari-- she knew her captain was captain for a reason. And she hadn’t steered them in the wrong direction yet. “I could always...” Natira trailed off, letting the fire at her fingertips finishing the sentence for her.

“Hmm, you’re too young to pull off the ‘I want to speak to the manager’ aura.” Pamela mused with a small chuckle. “But you could probably pull off the spoiled rich kid just waiting for someone to give her an excuse to make daddy file a lawsuit?” She suggested. She unfortunately did have some real experience of being that exact kind of bratty socialite.
Natira nodded thoughtfully, trying to think of what those kind of kids were like. She had met a few, but they were a rarity in 2040. “Sounds doable,” she hummed. It’d be more difficult than putting on the airs of being an idiot, but it’d be just the same-- another role for her to play.

“Say less and show more cleavage.” Sara offered with a tilted grin. “They won’t notice your attempts to blend in that way.”
“Won’t more eyes be on me, though?” It didn’t sound like bad advice, but Natira was more talking about being unseen-- instead of being written off. Couldn’t get in trouble if nobody even knew she was there.

“Cute, but not nearly vapid or whiny enough.” Pamela critiqued with a small chuckle. “Most people won’t bat an eye at you, but the goal of it is to make people actively want to avoid you. Hiding in plain sight is over-rated - at least one person always spots you. But give them something they know they want to keep far away from, not a soul will remember your face.”
“I never thought about it like that.” She had played the ditzy girl before and for the most part it had worked, but she was right. People were still paying attention, even at the worst of times. “I’m having a hard time thinking of anything I can say or do to make people want to keep far away from me, but you’re absolutely right.”

“Wait, why is he– What is he doing?” It had been said once and it’d be said again, but Natira was terrible to watch movies with. She asked too many questions and judged unfairly the movies she never thought he’d like. She shot down so many movies, her dads refused to watch any with her– unless she was the one who suggested it in the first place. Christian was the only one who still dared to offer up a movie that wasn’t on her list and not even she understood why he put up with it.
Still, it was kind of nice. Her feet on top of his legs, her eyes trying to follow the ancient action film. Seriously, who watched movies from the early 2000′s anymore? They were so old. “This whole dreamception thing doesn’t make any sense, you know that right? I mean–” Christian shushed her and she laughed, mimicking the zipper over the lips. It would continue to make no sense to her, but she’d watch it for her gramps.

“You know, I never thanked you.” Sara may not have realized it, but Natira felt indebted to the woman. She wasn’t just her captain, she was the woman who helped save Nat’s dad. She was constantly putting up with so much, she didn’t have to allow Natira on the ship– let alone let her get away with half of the stuff she pulled. And yet there they were.
Sara started to say something about how thanks weren’t needed, but Natira didn’t let her finish. She stepped in front of the captain with a sheet cake in her hands, the words ‘Thank you’ spelled out in icing. “I promise, it tastes good. Both of my dads were awful at cooking, so I learned pretty quick.” And she had asked around to make sure she got a flavor that Sara wouldn’t hate.

“Uncle Z!” Not everything about ARGUS was bad and Natira– though she constantly fought against the organization and it’s evil deeds– would be the first one to say that. Gramps (Christian) and Zachary were two of her favorite people. She found herself approaching the other with a pretty quick speed, waiting until the last moment to jump, all but koala bearing on his back.
He probably hated it, Natira never asked, but this had become pretty second nature for the two of them at this point. “How’s it going? I haven’t seen you in ages.” That was partly her fault, life was getting pretty hectic and she had cancelled their biweekly hang session’s twice now.

“–They have coffee flavored ice cream? Like, iced coffee….but also ice cream? Can I never go home?” She giggled, enjoying the fact that she could still enjoy herself, despite their dark mission. “Or, at least, can I take maybe–thirty or so gallons with me when I do go?”
Natira loved seeing Genevieve so happy. It was refreshing, considering the way her girlfriend had looked before they left for 2019 and if Natira was allowed to, she planned on keeping it that way. “I don’t think the Waverider has any freezers to accommodate for that, but if you’re willing to keep it cold for the travel, I don’t think anybody will argue with you.”

“Okay, I have a really serious question to ask you…” It was Gen’s first time off the Waverider (she and Nat had fought really hard to bring her to the past, and while it hadn’t been easy, she was eager to get started on saving her dad). Before she could do that, though, she had to get accustomed to the time she was in. For one thing, the lack of holographic transmitters was admittedly throwing her, but cell phones were almost as useful. “Is ice cream illegal here?”
“It’s not,” Natira reassured the girl, pulling her away from the Waverider and into 2019. They had landed not far off from where they left, the color of fall just starting to make itself known. “And there’s so many flavors you have to try. Strawberry, Mint Chocolate Chip, Coffee, which is gross to me but you’re gonna probably love.” They had come to save her dad, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t have a little fun. After all, they had all the time in the world.
“Playing the ditzy college girl is easy. Watch.” Natira took a second to gather herself, bouncing (literally) into character. “I’m just so mad he didn’t follow my Tiktok, like-- Obviously it’s never gonna be Vine, but grow up, Vine is dead.” Another second passed and she looked up at the other. “See? Easy.”

Amaya was relieved to see a hint of a smile finally grace Natira. If nothing else, maybe she would be better about opening up to her. Clearly Amaya didn’t do well with attitude. “Should have just said that,” she added softly, flashing back a smile of her own. “Let’s do some research then, see if it’s possible. You should talk to Sara, too. She’s tough, but our captain, and she’s wise when it comes to what our options are.” Natira’s comment drew a genuine laugh from the Vixen, and she nodded jubilantly. “That would be him. I know he’s a hot head, but if he gives you trouble, let me know. I know how to cool him down.” Her face ducked to hide the light flush that covered her cheeks at the remark. “Speaking of sandwiches, when did you last eat something? Are you hungry?”
Natira nodded, grateful to see that the other was pretty nice. It was another reminder for her to keep control of her temper-- they could have avoided this whole argument if Natira had just been calmer. “I’ll remember that,” she said with a softer smile, rocking back onto her heels. Amaya’s comment on Mick reminded her of her and Genevieve, though maybe that was just because Gen could literally cool her down when she was feeling hot headed. “Zari kept sneaking me food, but...” And just at that moment, her stomach gave her away. Despite it all, she was hungry. “I could eat.”

Natira wanted to feel happy that she had managed to save her dad, but she realized just how selfish she had been. She had left Gen on her own after the loss of her own dad. All she could feel right then was guilt. “You could come with me,” she suggested wildly, not quite ready to give up the hope that Gen had already lost. If they could save Ralph, then everything would be okay and they could both be happy. Not that she’d know if Sara would even allow Gen onto the Waverider, especially with the mission they wanted to set upon. Sara wasn’t as hard as people made her out to be, but she was still the captain and what she said was law. “We’d be careful and we’d be together. It- It worked for me, it could work for you.” She paused, knowing that even if it didn’t work, it could still prove as therapeutic. “At the very least, you could see him again.”
“I….what?” That wasn’t an option, it couldn’t be. She didn’t want to think she had the answers to solve everything right there in her hands, because if she messed up and couldn’t save her dad then…then it was all her fault. “Could you really offer me that? I don’t. I mean, I’d have to say yes. Of course I would. It would be selfish and stupid not to.” Her mom would be so happy if she could even just give them one more day together. A day to say goodbye. “Okay.” She agreed, resolution growing. “I’m on board. I want to–Even if it’s just to say goodbye. I want to try.”
She grabbed Nat’s hand again and smiled, heart filled with hope and excitement she hadn’t felt in over half a year. “We’re doing this.” She whispered. “We’re going to fix everything.”

Gen was different now, weighed down by the anger, and the trauma, and the pain her mother carried everywhere with her. She didn’t think Nat would want to go back to how things were before, but…she couldn’t guarantee that her girlfriend would be able to accept the change, either. “I know. I don’t blame you for that. You had to stay until you knew for certain. Until you’d done enough to fix things.”
Gen couldn’t hear the options, couldn’t open her mind to the possibility of saving her dad–because she couldn’t live through a failure. “No, don’t. Don’t do that, okay? I can’t have false hope right now. I need…I’ve lost enough. I don’t want to lose you, too, and if going back means risking losing you, or my mom, or anyone else that I care about–” She stopped, pulling their hands apart so she could wipe her nose on her sleeve. She immediately missed the familiar cool weight of Nat’s fingers between hers. “I don’t think I could survive that.”
“So, unless you can promise me that everything will be fine–and I know you can’t, because that’s impossible–then I’m not letting you get back on that time ship.”

Any quips Reena had been preparing about Nat’s definitely-not-real job at the paper died on her lips as she watched the older girl in horror. “Aha! I knew it!” She yelled, taking several rapid steps backwards and climbing up on the couch to make herself a more intimidating presence. It only put her about two inches taller than Nat, though, so it wasn’t all that helpful. “You’re a liar!” Reena yelled, the living room lights flickering dramatically above her. “Tell me what’s going on or I’m going to bring this whole place down!” She was, once again, banking on her belief that Natira knew nothing about what was going on, because to anyone who knew her powers extended to electrical circuitry and only electrical circuitry, she wasn’t scary at all.
Natira had apparently been caught in a lie, though she hadn’t realized the other girl had set her up for one. It was probably the rooms and she should have seen that coming from a mile away. Neither of their dads were innovative enough to put additions onto this house. She could feel herself getting heated at the idea of this girl confronting her and though there was a part of her that knew Reena belonged here now, her easily ignitable temper didn’t care. Fire flickered from her fingers and hair as she narrowed her eyes, careful not to fall under the sprinklers their dads had implemented in the home years ago. “Don’t you dare threaten my home, you-- You imposter! I come home after six months to some rando who’s apparently infiltrated my life and suddenly now I’m the bad guy?”
