Travelling is life. The opportunity to connect with people from different backgrounds and cultures, the immersion into different ways of life, the discovery of local cuisine and wonderful architecture⦠From a young age, I have always known that I wanted to see the world, and encounter all that it had to offer. I am a traveller. I honestly believe that this characteristic is present in my most intrinsic nature, as if embedded in my soul.
I hate staying in one place for too long, as the need to escape will eventually find me after a couple of months. In fact, after a while of staying in the same place, I start feeling claustrophobic; whether I am in a grandiose large city or in a picturesque isolated village, I never seem to stay content in one place for too long.
And it is not as if I wake up and suddenly resent the place I am residing in, or fail to see its beauty one morning. It is rather a sense of longing that overcomes me, an intense feeling of wanting something new. As a kid, to fill this curiosity, I emerged myself in novels. With each book, characters where in a different part of the world, experiencing great adventures. However, although reading is still one of my favourite activities, at some point it stopped being enough to fulfil my need of wonder.I used to feel guilty about this; here I was, lucky enough to live in a comfortable and inviting city, with all of the comforts of western life, but I still found ways to be nostalgic about other places. Talk about first world problems! But with time, I grew to accept this side of myself; I fully acknowledge that not everyone has the opportunity to travel like I do, and I am forever grateful that I get to do it. I cherish everywhere I am able to go to, including short and local excursions.
The Bali Fiasco
But now, for the real question: Where am I heading to next? It has been almost three years since Iāve been on what I call a ābigā trip. What qualifies as a ābigā trip in my opinion? Going on a plane, experiencing some kind of culture shock, not being able to fully understand the language⦠in sum, becoming an outsider for a few weeks. The last big trip I went to was to Italy, as I visited Rome, Florence and Venice. And ever since I came back, Iāve been fidgeting in my seat, just hoping I get the opportunity to go on a similar journey again.
But travelling can be expensive, and with college during the year and summer jobs in the summer, it started to feel like an impossible task for me. Still, I saved up little by little, and finally had enough to go to my dream destination: Bali, Indonesia.
I had planned to go there with a group of friends in late spring of my graduation year (May 2017), with a volunteering organization called IVHQ. Hoping to teach English and Environmental education in an elementary school in Ubud, I had made calls, gotten organized, figured out dates and we were ready to give in the first check when some of our parents started expressing concerns about the recent terrorist attacks in Indonesia that primarily targeted westerners. Although I did not feel really threatened by this and still wanted to go on the trip, I decided to oblige to my parentsā wishes. For this reason, we had to throw in the towel; Bali will have to wait.
A new journey
Although I was greatly disappointed, a silver lining soon arose: I now had enough money set aside to travel comfortably (but in no luxury whatsoever) to almost anywhere and, armed with my Canadian passport, the world suddenly felt like mine for the taking once more. I am currently contemplating South America, as I have never been to countries such as Chile or Peru. However, nothing is set in stone, and I am waiting for Christmas break to make arrangements. Iāll be sure to keep you guys updated once I come up with my destination for this May!
To conclude this first blog post, Iāll leave you guys with this:
Although I long to travel, I do consider it a blessing. I was lucky enough to be born in a position that allowed me to travel to most of the continents of this beautiful Earth, and so before I reached my twenties. For those of you who are still waiting for your longing of wonder to be fulfilled, I hope this blog can inspire you in the meantime, but hang it there: work immensely hard, want it more than anything, and it will come. I truly believe that. The world is ours for the taking,
