The College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Woodbury School of Business invite you to attend a special information session on Tuesday November 17th. Lunch will be provided to all attending. Students studying liberal arts topics (such as philosophy, English, languages and culture, history, communication, etc.) often receive questions such as – ‘what can you do with THAT degree?’ or ‘how will you use THAT in a career?’ or ‘why aren’t you studying something that will help you get a REAL job?’.
The truth is that businesses are actively seeking individuals who possess the skills naturally emphasized in the liberal arts. Skills such as critical thinking, creativity, written and verbal communication – and other so called ‘soft skills’ – are highly valued and necessary to a successful business. Liberal arts students have those skills, but often either aren’t aware of the value – or don’t know how to showcase those skills properly. They sometimes don’t seek business positions because of a perceived lack of experience or practical business skills. That’s a big mistake, and an opportunity lost.
Local business leaders will join us on the 17th to discuss the value of the liberal arts in a business environment, and offer information on how to successfully emphasize those ‘soft’ skills when exploring potential employment. This is a critical event for all students who are preparing to enter the job market. Experts will share insight into the importance of self-branding, marketing your liberal arts skill set, networking and thinking outside the box. You will also hear from UVU alumni who have successfully integrated into business careers. There is not only value in the skills you have – those skills are highly sought after in today’s work environment. Come and explore how to use those skills to set you on a path of career success! Lunch will be provide – and you are welcome to stay for all or part of the workshop.
