Two well-done animation projects by UW-Stout students, a fur-trading post and a historic flood, are part of a new exhibit at Chippewa Valley Museum in Eau Claire. A fantastic turnout for our senior exhibition!
In an experimental teaching project, two University of Wisconsin-Stout art and design faculty members, Kevin Pontuti and Dave Beck, brought students together from multiple classes to explore the convergence of cinema, animation and games.  Using the classic-game ZORK as inspiration, students worked in teams across two classes creating live-action and computer generated cinematics. ​

1st Stop Motion Animation of the semester (yes we're 5.5 weeks in as of today)!
Notes from Dr. H :
This film was a learning exercise to prepare for the rest of the semester. I have some hilarious students.Â
Trivia: -The scale is one inch to one foot. A 5ft6in professor was 5.5in tall. -Each student made their own model and at least one professor. -The setting is UW Stout and if you freeze frame you will notice familiar sights and injokes. Obvious ones to watch out for are the Art History posters remade with zombie themes, the multiple trash cans repurposed, groups of faculty on their way to meetings, Charlie critiquing hallway paintings, Tim and Amy teaching “life drawing”, and Joseph’s big head prints zombified. -Students measured and reproduced exact floor plans and models for the sculpture studio, the life drawing room, one of the graphic design rooms, MH176, and three hallways. -Everything, down to the twisted wire easels and hallway bubblers, was handmade by the students. -16 pizza boxes gave their lives for this film.
With the zombie apocalypse happening in MH-184, we decided we'd play it safe and set up the new Mo Cap system from CINEMA SUITE next door in MH-175. Once Gus and Zack get their dance moves together (and out of their system), we'll see what an animated Grue can do. Former college roommates' art careers right out of the movies.
It’s probably no coincidence that Chris Grun and Jason Sadler came to University of Wisconsin-Stout in the early 1990s. They wanted to study art, and UW-Stout was — and is — regarded as one of the best art schools in the Midwest.
Grun was from the Twin Cities suburb of Minnetonka, Minn., and Sadler from the Wisconsin community of Raymond, near Racine. The cities are about 320 miles apart. What's unusual is that Grun and Sadler, who had never met each other, were interested in the same aspect of art, the cutting-edge field of animated movies. With hits like "The Little Mermaid" in 1989, "Beauty and the Beast" in 1991 and "The Lion King" in 1994, movie animation had begun to explode. The genre depends heavily on artists to create the characters and environments. Grun and Sadler saw a bright and exciting future for movie animation and wanted to be part of it. More than 20 years later, it's clear they were on the right track. The former college roommates not only still are working in the industry as it has continued to expand but have had highly successful careers.
They work for two of the biggest animation studios in the world, Grun for DreamWorks Animation in Glendale, Calif., and Sadler for Blue Sky Studios, a subsidiary of 20th Century Fox, in Greenwich, Conn.

Twenty-two art majors at University of Wisconsin-Stout are looking forward to a new and exciting course in January, one that not only will take them to California in midwinter but give them a chance to work with one of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, The Jim Henson Company.

Dave Beck, Assistant Professor in Entertainment Design and Bert Fraher, Assistant Professor of Interactive Media attended the International Digital Media and Arts Association Conference this week with students Cody Hartelben and Keith Catalano. UW-Stout received the juried "Student Showcase Award", which is given to the program or department that demonstrates the highest quality overall student work in digital art and design. The two students exhibited their portfolios as featured elements in the showcase. The showcase also included additional select student work from the courses in the specialization areas such as 3D Modeling and Animation and Interactive Design. Receiving this prestigious award is largely due to the top quality of our two individual students' portfolios, with additional student work examples demonstrating the depth and breadth of what we teach in the Entertainment and Graphic & Interactive Design majors at UW-Stout. This award also reflects the incredibly skilled instruction by School of Art and Design faculty.
Team Sandal have generously made their film Ntxhov (Disturbed) available for free on youtube and vimeo. This short film was a produced by UW-Stout students as a class project and was and selected to the Flyway Film Festival (which was just ranked as one of the top 25 coolest US film festivals!) The film is really good and garnering quite a bit of praise from the film community!
