Let's look at a few of the ways that words effect us (and then after reading this article think about the fact that if we know about it, almost certainly much more much worse stuff is going on).
So let's attack one thing which might just show how deep this entire thing goes, this one is a difficult one, and i need you to hear me out and actually continue reading this, but the first example of specifically words specifically swaying what people think without said people realising it is this; The world doesn't need religion now that we've got science!
This is an interesting one because i have met many a person who believes this, with this exact wording, somewhat unquestioningly, for them of course science (which is new knowledge and truth) and religion (which is old lies). These people, naturally, do not have a good understanding of religion or science and almost all of their arguments crumble when questioned even a little bit. And this isn't an argument against that statement in general, while i don't agree with it if that's something which someone has come to through their own free will and understanding, cool. But this is something new; if i were to hazard a guess as to its origin i would say it probably started as some sort of reddit atheist talking point which gained popularity through word of mouth (which is the MOST POWERFUL FORM OF MARKETING), social media, and to some degree news and fiction media. Science is a method, but if you don't know that, and if you hate religion more than making one or two google searches, this snappy one liner goes hard. And you do not understand any components of this, any of the history, you just know that this is your position (even though it comes from outside and has been accepted unquestioningly), and you are right.
Another thing which contributes to this sentiment and the general effect of making people believe things (which they previously did not, do not understand, and have not made a free judgement to come to that decision) is fiction and comedy. It is so much more powerful than people think. Let's take one such example; south park.
It is full to the brim of manipulative wording and techniques; and it has the advantage of being comedy, in a very specific space where people are willing to accept outside "truths" without any understanding of, as i said before, the history or components of those things. The big glaring example of this is south park's coverage of religion, which has peddled so many misconceptions about so many groups because people are willing to take these things at face value for some reason, because it's comedy.
And another thing it does well which lots of other media does; it has total control of the framing. The agenda is fully embedded in the plot, the writers don't care about getting the actual answers from the actual groups and people in the show, so the responses the fake versions of those groups or people give are completely unsatisfactory. This is of course on purpose, but unless you're thinking about this very thing, it is easy to just go along and think that actually this response is the response of the real life thing, and the real life thing is stupid because who in their right mind would argue for this?
Though that has a silver lining; many people who learn about things that to them have been slandered in this way are often surprised that no, they're not all crazy and stupid and yes, the ideas have at least a bit of merit.
And this is not saying you need to believe in everything, but i think you should deeply understand everything, because only then can you actually make an informed and free decision on it.
Again, the cure for this is self-awareness, knowing that this is happening and being more aware of the media that you consume is very very important because it means that you know what is going on, and you are in control, not the creators of the media.
