Sabine could not recall the last time she was burdened with such a bone-crushing weight on her shoulders, even the guilt of her designing a destructive weapon to wipe her people off the face of the galaxy seemed like a distant memory to her.
This was a far different situation. Kanan had died, sacrificing himself to save everyone else in a blaze of glory, and now so was Ezra, who defied the odds and did the unthinkable by sending Thrawn, along with himself to the unknown reaches of space with the help of the Purrgil. Two of the most important people who helped shaped the young Mandalorian into the person she was now were gone, leaving a gaping hole in her soul.
But it could never be matched to the hole that Ezra had left in Sabine's heart. She had chastised herself for not admitting her feelings for him sooner - only waiting until the very last minute before their final showdown to liberate Lothal. If she confessed sooner, then maybe he would not have vanished, and he would be with her at her side.
"Ezra..." her voice cracked as she thought about the lost boy, not knowing whether he was dead like Kanan or somehow still alive. The possibility nevertheless scared her to death, and eventually the reality of his absence hit her where it hurt most. Unable to hold back her feelings, she let out a hoarse cry as she leaned over the tower railing, her voice caught in sobs as tears rolled down her cheeks and rained down to the ground below. Even if she promised to look after Lothal for him simply because he was 'counting on her', there was nothing she could do to fill in that gap of loneliness.
After a good long cry to herself, especially since she was still too proud to do it in front of others, Sabine slowly straightened up as her hand drifted towards her belly to give it a slow rub. Around three months since she told Ezra about her feelings, and then lost him within the next day, and he had given her a beautiful blessing in disguise.
Sabine still wished he was there to support her through an ordeal born of reckless actions and impulsive desires, but she would not be alone anymore within a couple months, and it was thanks in part to Ezra himself that she still had a piece of him, aside from his lightsaber.
And their shared blessing in her belly was worth carrying on, and above all - keeping a smile on her face.
