the part of it that i want to have existing on here are my visits to the met and moma. like a ghost, yes. i love this hellsite because of all the art it exposed me to as a teen. that's the age you really fall in love, and my obsessions (fuelled by the obsessions of this website), will forever live on. i honestly didn't look up what i could expect to see at the met, just went in with all the knowledge i've collected over the years, and that was enough context for me to have so much fun there. I can't write out everything that i felt but here are some highlights.
I've somehow stopped following artists who are working right now to create beautiful things. i realised this when i saw an artist's painting in the modern art section of the Met, whose art I've admired for years now. And now he's in the met! How did I miss this milestone. it's time to keep up again. Cecily Brown's exhibition was such an experience, it deepened my love for modern art. The mess that makes the painting look like scribbles, are the details that enhance the scene.
I'd see something in the next room with the corner of my eye, recognise the work, and i was drawn towards it. The order in which i took in the Impressionists section was so chaotic. i can't really describe in words this experience, but i will say that i gasped a lot. it's truly a mastery of light, colour, composition, and artistic tools.
the manet/degas exhibition confronted me with the scale of the number of works these artists have created in their lifetimes. it's hard to imagine how much time was dedicated to their craft.
In Cecily Brown's work, it's the emphasised details that render an abstract scene. Whereas with Monet, even without precise detailing, the viewer can see a near-photorealistic scene.
