What's getting drowned out in all the global noise.
Students in India are protesting the leak of the NEET entrance exam paper. In the capital, Delhi, the protest was serious business. A renowned educator had fasted for 26 days, a newly formed youth platform Cockroach Janata Party (don't ask) had been leading the supposedly peaceful protest to the parliament, and parents students actors politician joined in. Serious stuff.
However, in a state called Bihar, the protests were...different. The protestors wheeled away on the metal barricades that had been put to control the people. When water canons were used, they converted it into a raindance. When the cops charged at them, they sang the national anthem, which forced the cops to stand still to honour it. They asked the cops: where's the tear gas...have no arrangements been made? They blasted those God-forsaken Bihari movie songs. When the cops tried to use a rope to regulate the crowds, they played tug-of-war with them.
Impudent little raccoons. I don't know how the cops kept a straight face. May all protests be like this one.
"I can't believe humans would hunt the thylacine to extinction, humans are fundamentally evil" Hey, did you know that extinction was long thought to be impossible, and within 50 years of humans realizing that extinction via overhunting was a possibility it practically stopped happening? Did you know that humans are so desperate to prevent more losses that they're funneling millions of collective hours and billions of euros into helping other species? Hours and euros that could be spent on humans, and species on whom humanity's own survival does not depend? Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?
This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.
@crabussy
as someone in the field of ecological conservation, I can promise without a shadow of a doubt that people DO care. SO MANY people care.
I have to race to sign up to volunteer trips because even with dozens of spots available, people rush to devote their unpaid free time to helping the environment. these trips often fill up within hours. people care.
you will see a lot of bad news because that is the kind of news that people pay the most attention to. I know this more than you'd think from my optimism- not only do I live somewhere facing some of the most extreme ecological issues on the planet, I also spend my time studying the Bad Stuff every single day.
to see all of this firsthand and stay hopeful is proof enough that there IS hope. I promise there is good news, brilliant news, all the time. it's just less visible. but it's no less important or impactful.
Now that the rains are here, these 5 things are in:
1. The Big 5 waterborne diseases: Dysentry, Diarrhoea, Gastro, Typhoid, Jaundice, and Leptospirosis. Contracted by eating uncooked food. Leptospirosis is contracted by ingesting dirty water that has rodent faeces mixed in it. God save you from them. I've lived through dysentery once and never again. Though in India, it's considered fashionable to tempt fate in order to gain immunity superpowers. People continue eating street food.
2. My OCD is not behaving: I may be able to coax my OCD at all other times, but rainy season, it just bosses me around like it's my manger or something. I have a contamination OCD but it's pretty manageable in the non-rainy months of the year. In the rains, everything is wet--soggy stuff on the roads, dog pee and poo mixing in the water puddles, fungus on walls, wet, rotting garbage, and the general sense that EVERYTHING is dirty. I try not to get out of my house, where everything is clean and dry (kitchens are a challenge...especially the garbage can).
3. Mosquitoes: Little buzzing buzzkills. Float like mosquitoes, sting like mosquitoes. They become so fat after a while that they can't even fly properly and just float heavily between your face and the phone screen.
4. Electricity drops: I have never understood why electricity cuts exist in the rains. In summer, overconsumption taxes grids, so electricity trips...I get that. But in the rains? Mystery.
5. Maids bunking: Housemaids who work for us bunk work more than usual citing flooded streets, illness and other such. My maid gets 2 days off in a month...it's the general rule out here. Even so, she will act extra when I call her, like she has been stung by a scorpion and is writhing in her sweat. She ain't winning no Oscar. I've told her in so many words: bai, no need to do all this drama. It's your rightful leave just inform me and take it. Still she persists.
LLLol! I love the internet.
What he is saying: The Argentina players played dirty football throughout the match...and tournament. But look at the irony. The foul by Molina on Nico Williams was actually instrumental in Spain winning. See, if Molina had not pushed Nico, our boy Nico would prolly fall a bit short of reaching that descending ball. But Molina did push Nico, and Nico did lurch forward as a result and was just in the perfect spot to effortlessly head that in Ferran's direction, who rushed in, netted that and the rest is history.
For Spain, the timing, the positioning, the progression was perfect.

Yesssss! What a game seriously❤️España! The last 2 matches of this World Cup gave me back my happiness and peace o mind.
1 hour to go for the FIFA final...which I dont really care for. Anyways, the way things have been going Fartgentina will win. I'm with Spain. So it gives me kicks to see the number of people tapping in to support Spain are more than the ones for their racist opponents.
Loved loved loved the match vibes between England and France btw. It's true, this match was the real final, the way football should be. See them ya!

Can't believe FIFA is going to be over.
Costa got what was happening...and why 😊
Every time you go in a public place and something ISN’T disgusting it’s because somebody cleaned it. Every time you feel comfortable using a public bathroom or sitting at a restaurant table or setting something on a gas station counter or playing on a playground it’s because somebody cleaned it.
Thank you to everyone who cleans the world, especially those who are underpaid and under appreciated.
This is me cooking (not literally, of course.) The video makes me so happy because "so I'm not the only one who washes their hands that often when cooking."
I'm currently single. Notably, I was also single during the time my flatmate B co-housed with me. We became good friends and she was worried about me being single and about how I was tackling things in life. One night, she sat me down and gave me a deep talk about finding somebody...pronto. Oh she was so good with the argument and that potent mix of logic, fear, and emotion, she actually made me stop, think, and act. For what it's worth, I got onto some app and tried. She wanted a progress report on how things were shaping up lol. I love her, really.
A few months ago, she called me and told me about someone she worked with, someone she thought was a great fit for me. I usually hear everyone out, so I listened as she told me who he was, what he did, and she shared his number with me. He seemed impressive, but I feel that he is perfect for another friend of mine. She's really awesome, and I feel they both are more similar as people. Now...I dont know how to go about it. Should I tell B about it? She will definitely give me a sound firing. Should I tell my other friend or would that be premature? Should I talk to the guy and slowly lead him into following my plan? Nah too sneaky. I'd rather just say it....but what should I say and to which one of these people? Tricky tricky.
The Battle of Nuremberg as it is lovingly called. All that went down.
So, my phone screen is dying. I can't see anything with the pink purple patches spreading across the screen.
I'm typing this through muscle memory on the now obscure keyboard. Replacing the screen will set me back by 12,500. Too pricey, but it's the cost of the Samsung original part for a Note phone. The part warranty is 90 days, which is shite. It should be at least a year for an original part, no? Alternatively, I can opt for a non-branded screen costing 3500. No guarantees and I was told it might not work perfectly. Or, I can buy a new phone. The latest Samsung phones, even the economy range, come with Ai. I can get one on EMIs so my bank account does not get high BP.
For now, I'm going to do what I do best...postpone the decision until clarity hits me. My time-to-decision is improving these days, so it could be any day within a month. In the meanwhile, I'll be using an old spare Samsung phone. It's....well, it's a functional smartphone, and I'll leave it at that.
The horror now cropping up in the very near future is transferring my SIM and data, downloading necessary apps, and trying to recall pwds. I'd pay someone to do it, but I am too untrusting with my info and data to take third-party help. Chheh.
Lol! I just had to. In what can be considered good balance, Messi has now become FIFA's goat. But before that, it was him against Pepe, Ramos, and other meanies from Real Madrid.
