wait for it, i promise it’s worth it
I didn’t know Mr. T pityed fool’s that weren’t woke, but that’s awesome. #respect
“I think about my father being called ‘boy’, my uncle being called ‘boy’, my brother, coming back from Vietnam and being called ‘boy’. So I questioned myself: “What does a black man have to do before he’s given the respect as a man?” So when I was 18 years old, when I was old enough to fight and die for my country, old enough to drink, old enough to vote, I said I was old enough to be called a man. I self-ordained myself Mr. T so the first word out of everybody’s mouth is “Mr.” That’s a sign of respect that my father didn’t get, that my brother didn’t get, that my mother didn’t get.“
-Mr. T on the subject of his name
A lot of people in the notes claiming Letterman is an asshole for laughing after this… But the truth is this gif set appears to be engineered to give that impression… I mean I hope that’s an accident, but he doesn’t laugh here in the interview, he just kind of segues into talking about Rocky and How Mr. T stole the show from Stalone.
Mr. T would have walked out if Letterman had laughed here.
The laugh is actually from another part of the interview where he asks Mr. T his real name and Mr. T tells him he wouldn’t ask that of the Pope (Classic). And when Dave presses it and asks him if he has a middle name Mr. T says humerously “First name Mr, middle name period, last name T.” And Dave is laughing at being upstaged.
That’s not to say there’s nothing problematic, there’s tons, but nothing so overt. It was the 80s. Covert racism was the well established norm.
The biggest bullshit here is that Dave keeps trying to frame Mr. T’s character in Rocky 3 as “Scary” and “Frightening” even after Mr. T made it clear that this isn’t how he saw the character and instead that he saw him as wronged and “Hungry”.
Seriously take the time to watch the interview it’s great and will give you a whole new respect for this compassionate, funny and brilliant man.
I don’t think I’ve reblogged Mr. T before, but I have loved Mr. T since I was 12. If I ever win a contest where I can invite any celebrity to my birthday party, Mr. T. is whom I would pick. No one understands this, but he would come over and we would make sandwiches, and then we would go outside and play trampoline dodgeball before having cake. I have had it planned since I was 12 and the plan hasn’t changed and will NEVER change.
