I wrote this blog post for school on this show so I thought I would re post it on here for the rest of you to read. Watch the show above for a good laugh!
Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace was a very interesting web show to watch. At first I thought that the show was supposed to be in a serious but badly made context. I realized towards the end of the show that it was purposely made to be, in a sense, a big joke or what’s normally called a parody. It was created to make people think “what the heck am I watching?”, or at least those are the thoughts I had when watching the show.
While watching the show I had many different feelings towards it. This is show is very different than any other show I have watched I do like that the context of the show was strange because I enjoy watching Sci Fi, Horror Films, and Thrillers. In all honestly though, if it was not for us watching it in class I probably never would have come across it. When it comes to watching shows, aesthetics are very important to me. I cannot watch a movie or show that was poorly produced. As funny and entertaining as this show was, it was still an eye sore to sit through.
The only nice thing I can say about the production of this show is that the style and the narrative went together. They only went together though because both were all over the place and did not make much sense. I could understand parts of the narrative and how they flowed together but at the same time it could have been a lot smoother then it was. I believe the viewer has to think too hard and watch the show more than once to follow the narrative.
First off, the lighting was completely off. It constantly changed and did not stay consistent from scene to scene or even sequence to sequence. It was also distracting because of how much it changed. One example is how the “angel light” was shown behind the actress in one of the first scenes. It never reappeared anywhere else in the show. They made it clear that the filmmakers were not paying close attention to the lighting which caused that incident.
Second, the sound and music was horrible. I found it hard to listen to. The music was “out there” and annoying in my opinion. For their benefit though, it did give the show that creepy edge it was asking for. The way the voices changed and did not line up with the show made it look very unprofessional, even if it was not what they were striving for.
Third, the editing was very, very bad. As a graphic design major, it hurt to see the flying objects in space that were not cropped properly. It was done very sloppy for even a parody show. Fourth, the acting and performance was awful. They acted as, and I know purposely, to look like they didn’t know what they were doing and they succeeded.
I am going to end this with a quote from the book that explains how a film should be produced: “Filmmaking relies on technology and financing. First, filmmakers need fairly complicated machines.” Clearly the filmmakers who created this did not have these types of machines which show why this will always remain a parody and never anything more.
