Leila had a surprisingly good night's sleep. Well for the most part.
She fell asleep faster than her insomnia normally allowed her to. And she was exhausted enough to not have demigod nightmares.
But that just meant she had her normal run of the mill mortal nightmares. And when they were about the two years of absolute abyss and darkness she spent, and the night she lost her brother she would rather deal with nightmares about monsters.
She woke up without a sound, her breathing heavy as she sat up.
Hey you're alright. No monsters, no abyss.
She calmed down, resting her head on her knees, she glanced around at the unfamiliar place.
Right. Camp.
She decided she needed to clear her head so she got out, quietly heading out the cabin for a walk

valen is awoken by the sound of the door creaking open. he rolls over, watching it close, as the figure disappears. for a moment, he's not really surprised. he was almost expecting leila to leave before he woke up- or as soon as possible, at least.
but a glance down lets him know that her stuff is still tucked beside their shared bunk.
with a groan, he climbs out of the bed and follows her out.
it takes valen a few minutes to find her. once he does, he quietly sits a few feet away in the sand. he sits in the quiet for a moment, unsure if he should bother her at all.
"hey." he finally decides on, staring out at the ocean. "you're up early."
"Hmm" she fell back onto the sand, laying down to stare up into the sky.
"I don't want to be all sad about stuff, it's not my style. But I guess my brain is too tired to care and maybe it'll help"
She turns her head toward him and sighed, "I'm a twin. My brother and I are both kids of Erebus. Our mom raised us but when she died, we decided to go to camp she had told us about. Which would be all good and dandy but two kids of a premordial God bring forth a lot of monsters" she says.
"It had been days of fighting off monsters when they surrounded us again. I'll admit, I was tired and scared and I froze and my brother saw and protected me. We were both gravely injured and in our last moment our dad decided to engulf us in complete darkness and abyss in hopes to save us"
"I spend a year unconscious there. Another year conscious and aware however with my body still too weak to hold onto me. After that I woke up. All well and good but...my brother didn't" she shrugged.
"Our dad saved his consciousness but he was too wounded to inhabit his body again. So he inhabits my head. Sometimes, he can leave and it's as if every dark spot is his eyes. So he can talk to me. But not anyone else"
"So that's about it. All you need to know about me I guess. I'll regret talking in the morning but right now it helps to get it all out and my brother is probably really proud of me for talking to someone so yay" she slumps back, relaxing into the sand.
"The nightmare was about the abyss, at least this time. The abyss itself wasn't bad at the time but not knowing whether my brother and i would survive was its own hell"
She turns back to him, "so there's that. Do you want to share with the class? Or are you gonna make the conscious and probably sensible decision to not share your entire life story with a stranger?"
valen listens quietly, letting her story seep into the empty spaces of his mind. he hums.
"im sorry for your brother."
when she asks about him, he smiles. "well- uh. my story is not nearly as existentially dreadful as yours, i guess."
"my mother was a model. i know, cliche. but she always knew aphrodite was a goddess. she was a devotee, actually. and so when she had me, at first it was the best thing to happen to her. but when aphrodite left... i mean, my mother completely crashed."
"she... blamed it on me, i guess. there were never enough monsters after me to put her in danger, but she couldn't just give me up. so i was raised as her... trophy kid, basically. her perfect little girl." he grimaces.
"but it didn't last. she's... insane, i think. something like that. i never really was fast enough."
"i started coming to camp when i was seven. every summer. and uh- i was so thoughtfully disowned at thirteen." valen gives a shrug, and then falls back into the sand as well. "standard abusive mom stuff, y'know?"
She listened carefully, "I have some colourful words about your mother but out of respect for you I'll keep them to myself"
She looked back up at the sky, letting out a thoughtful hum, "a good amount of parents don't deserve their kids. I've heard a few stories from the short time me and my brother were in the foster system. I hope you know there's nothing "standard" about a parent doing that to their kid. You didn't deserve that, and she didn't deserve you"
"yeah... i know. but it's just another shitty part of life, right? parents can suck, people can die. no one deserves that to happen to them, but it does anyways." valen shrugs, clearing his throat.
"and hey," he turns on his side, now facing her. "im glad you're... talking. y'know. even though im basically a stranger. im... sure your brother is proud of you."
She sits up, resting her head on her knees, "yeah. And being a demigod is just increasing the difficulty mode"
She lets out a chuckle, "oh yeah he would be. He keeps telling me to talk to people, make friends, date" she rolled his eyes, "in fact I'll bet you tomorrow comes and he'll be all cocky about "I told you so" and "if only you listened to your genius brother" which by the way just because I want someone to know. I'm older. By a whole 2 minutes" she told him
"It is impressive. He'll tell you otherwise if he could but he's lying. I'm older and stronger" she grins.
"Though I'll admit he got the brains though. He was always great at school, he liked building stuff and was really into physics and all that stuff" she waved her hand around, "I was pretty much the opposite"
"No! He's lame. A big lame lamo. He's the opposite of cool"
Okay rude
Oh you're back
My six sense told me you were talking shit about me
You don't even have your basic 5 senses
Ha ha. Now don't lie. Tell him how cool I am
You're not though
She looks at Valen, "anywho as I was saying. He's lame"
Ouch
"But he had friends. Like nerd friends but they were cool I guess. Smart and into cool stuff like comics and games" she shrugs.
"I on the other hand was cool as hell. Still am. I was more into other stuff though. Music for one, skateboarding was fun. I remember I used to graffiti with my friends" she smiled, "a true artist in the making"
Oh I forgot about that. Those were pretty cool
Yeah I know I'm awesome
right not what I said
"I was I guess pretty loud. If I thought someone was unfair I'd fight, didn't matter if it was a student or a teacher" she rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly, "I got into trouble basically"
"It's not too hard. I think the message matters more than how pretty it looks" she shrugs
She snorted, "yeah I guess in theory but it only brought trouble. I was- am too hot headed. I got into arguments over little stuff, got overly passionate about something I thought was unfair. My brother was always someone everyone called to "calm down the crazy girl" or something" she rolled her eyes.
"At least that's over. No more school. No more principal's office"
She wraps her arms around her knees, burying her face in them, "I guess..."
"I still don't think I'll stay. But maybe... next time I'm in a tough spot I'll consider here" she says, barely above a whisper.
It was still too much. Every version of this place in her head she was supposed to experience with her brother. It was always supposed to be them together.
She grins, "guess you're right. But you're pretty cool for a dork so we can be friends. Just keep it on the down low, i have a reputation to keep" she mock whispers as a joke

Okay rude

You're not though
She looks at Valen, "anywho as I was saying. He's lame"
Ouch
"But he had friends. Like nerd friends but they were cool I guess. Smart and into cool stuff like comics and games" she shrugs.
"I on the other hand was cool as hell. Still am. I was more into other stuff though. Music for one, skateboarding was fun. I remember I used to graffiti with my friends" she smiled, "a true artist in the making"
Oh I forgot about that. Those were pretty cool

valen is awoken by the sound of the door creaking open. he rolls over, watching it close, as the figure disappears. for a moment, he's not really surprised. he was almost expecting leila to leave before he woke up- or as soon as possible, at least.
but a glance down lets him know that her stuff is still tucked beside their shared bunk.
with a groan, he climbs out of the bed and follows her out.
it takes valen a few minutes to find her. once he does, he quietly sits a few feet away in the sand. he sits in the quiet for a moment, unsure if he should bother her at all.
Right. Camp.
