“you only get a vacation like this once. why not enjoy it, right?” angel asked before finishing off her drink. “i still can’t get over how beautiful it is here. i’ve been to islands before, but this is still unlike anything i’ve ever seen, really. the water is stunning.” she pointed out. “where ya from?”

“Vegas so I really can’t deal with this gorgeous place,” she answered, “it feels like a dream. Like I’m going to wake up and I’m going to be back at home with my fake grass and cactus that I can’t seem to keep alive. What about you? Where’s home for you?”

“oh, man. i have to get down there before it’s all put away. i’m really craving bacon for some reason.” angel glanced out at the islanders as well. she wondered how this stay would go with so many gorgeous people walking around. she was certainly looking forward to making connections with as many as possible. “whenever i want to eat something that’s bad for me, i just remember that i’m here for a good time not a long time.” she joked. “nice to meet you. i’m angel.”

“The bacon was exceptional,” Valerie beamed. Valerie attempted to eat healthy back home because it was the best way to prevent getting run down and sick with her long hours. But here she wasn’t on call, she didn’t have to cover anyone’s shift, she could just be Val. “That is a dangerous motto that I think I’m going to steal while I’m here Angel,” she continued.

now he has his own interest once she uttered about lesson of heat, that and she had this girl next door vibe that was just too hard to pass up,   “ah the desert,  similar feel,  I spent a lot of time in iraq and afghanistan,  not quite vegas but I feel like deserts all have that similar feel.”  he nods,  “yeah,  I mean,  its just the humidity really,  I’m good with heat.  deserts easy, drink water and usually you feel better.  in humidity its rough, because you stay sweaty and everything is damp.”  speaking of it, he sinks down into the water, back against the side of the pool,  “don’t notice it as much on the islands, its the places without that wonderful view or surroundings that feel the worst.”  a smile,  “oahu,  best surfing spots around,  here’s to hopin’ I can see the ones here.  you lived in vegas all your life?”

Valerie wondered if he was a veteran. She didn’t want to assume anything because people always surprised you. She watched as he slid into the water and was very pleased he did so. Her eyes probably lingered a little too long on the water hit his broad shoulders and she had to stop herself. God he was hot. “Yeah born and raised. The heat is awful but you can never be bored in Vegas. There’s always something going on,” she explained with a smile, “I haven’t been anywhere else though, travel wise because I’m kind of a workaholic so this...” She paused and gestured around their current surroundings. “Is all a first for me. And now since I’ve met a surfer, I think I’m going to have to force you into giving me lessons while we’re here.”

almost as soon as she’d arrived on the island, angel wasted no time quickly dressing into her swimsuit to do a little walking around the beach. it was way too hot for her liking and she knew she needed find a way to cool off and chill out until sun decided to hide out for a bit. once she spotted the pool, she grabbed herself a drink and hopped right in, sighing softly once her body hit the cold water. after a minute of relaxing, she hopped up on the edge, leaving her feet wading in the water as she watched the other visitors around the island, that she’d yet to introduce herself to. when someone sat next to her moments later, angel looked up at her and smiled. “it’s amazing and yeah it is. i had to find a way to cool off.” she replied. “have you had a chance to check out the breakfast buffet yet? probably should have been one of my first stops, but i’m way too excited to eat anything.”

“I did actually and it was fucking delicious,” Valerie answered with a grin. She took a sip from her mimosa and sat back on her hands again. Her eyes went to the other islanders, sometimes lingering longer than she should. “Well when you calm down, you need to try just about everything they have. It was all way too good and not the greatest if I’m going to be living in this bikini while I’m here,” she joked, “I’m Valerie but everyone calls me Val.”

christopher decided to leave his surfboard in his cabin,  probably better for day two or farther into the week to bust that out into the water,  might as well mingle and see the people he’d be spending his time with.  though it would be easy for him to isolate himself,  keep his battery all charged up.  the pool, was the next best thing to surfing,  it didn’t require walking and he was blissfully content with his legs dipped in the water,  pina colada next to him,  the hurriane next,  top two favorite drinks hands down.  he carries a smile,  carrying to his eyes even hidden behind his sunglasses,  “right? islands always seem so much hotter,  drink plenty of water and don’t over expose and you’ll be good.  learned that one the hard way,  day one of moving to hawaii.”

Valerie eyed her new companion. He was definitely attractive and she knew she had made the right call. If nothing else, he was absolutely lovely to look at it. “I think the lessons of heat were drilled into my head the day I was born,” she replied with a smile, “Vegas native, but this is a different kind of heat. You expect the desert to be hell, but it sneaks up on you here and Hawaii too I’d imagine. The views make you forget the sun is beating down on you.” She took a sip of her mimosa and kicked her feet a little in the water. “So which island do you call home?” she asked curiously.

      “Just dunk me in the pool.” If he didn’t slip in himself. Water, swimming was in his blood. He was born at home in the tub, his mother eternally pushing off the ride to the hospital. It shaped his life, seeking a pool whenever work and his hobby of dancing at the club did not occupy his time. It was only a matter of moments before he did it himself — committing to the salt water pool for a few laps. It was the nickname that pulled his attention: the flash of the headboard shared with two names.

      “I’ve only traveled throughout Europe, and even then just slightly. America has eluded my travels.” Erik paused a moment, turning slight grin toward the blonde, “Erik. I think we might be sharing a room.” Hand clasped her own, a firm shake — fortunate he meet the woman so soon.

Valerie smiled at his response. She briefly considered pushing him in, but that wouldn’t be any fun. She would save it for when he was least expecting it and she would be lying if she didn’t have ulterior motives regarding how he looked while wet. Her eyes grew wide when he said his name. She nodded and after letting go of his hand, pulled the card she’d been handed on arrival from beneath its cover under her bikini top. 

"I think you’re right,” Valerie smiled, “cabin 6? I didn’t really stick around. Kind of threw my suitcase in the closet and came back out here.” She paused a moment, chewing on her lip as she mulled something over. “I gotta say I’m not disappointed with this setup,” she continued her smiling growing to a teasing grin, “It means I can keep a close eye on you... while you’re in bed next to me, you know for heat stroke reasons.”

      “Call it a favor. It’s a cardinal sin to let someone whose hungry or otherwise go without. I’d all but die if I was refused delicious breakfast.” Traveling was part of work. Her name graced many fashion journals, tracking through the various large shows to report back on the designers tastes for the season thus far. She loved her job, and traveling afforded her the ability to see much of the world … and the occupation of her time. “I did the first few times I traveled. It happens so frequently now … I’m on a plane every few days if work is busy.”

      With a small plate to sample the goods at the buffet, and a mimosa of her own, Annie perched in the corner of the buffet and out of the way of any potential guests seeking their own meal. “I’ve been to Vegas once. It was busy but there was always something to do. It’s nice to meet you, Val. I’m Annie … originally from England. So the breeze and warmth is welcome.”

“Vegas is insane on the strip but once you leave the major tourist areas, it’s just a normal big city. The insanity is nice when you’re feeling bored because there’s always something going on,” she explained. The combination of the mimosa and the food was leveling out her previously acquired nerves from the flight. Annie was easy to talk to and she seemed so much more refined than Valerie had ever felt, but she liked that. “So what do you do Annie that makes you fly on the death machines all the time?” Valerie inquired after following Annie out of the way of the other islanders wanting to feast.

      After long moments of awe at the pier, Erik had finally made way to his cabin. Names lay on the headboard of the bed, surprise had tinted his expression but — alas, he knew such a paradise had a catch. Still, the room had been absent another set of bags and Erik was quick to claim a side of the bed by simply depositing his luggage on the floor beside it and shucking his shoes and socks away.

      He’d only been at the saltwater pool shortly before being joined by the blonde, having explored just a small portion of their little paradise before settling at the edge. Pants rolled up to his knees, button-down shirt rolled up to his elbows, Erik was pleased to dip his legs into the water and allow it to cool him down. Sweat slicked his hairline but — he was used to that.

      “I might die of heat stroke before this thing starts, honestly.”

Valerie smiled at the man. Everyone she’d met so far seemed nice and normal. Very attractive, but normal which she found surprising. She’d been expecting a lot of ego and a lot of confidence, but either people were hiding it well or they just were normal people struggling like she was. “I won’t let you die of heat stroke,” she offered, “it’s been a while since I did my residency but I think I can manage keeping someone from suffering heat stroke.” 

“I’m also from Vegas so we’re kind of experts in heat,” she smiled before sipping her drink. She set it back down and looked back over to him wondering why he hadn’t changed into something more comfortable. “I’m Val,” she introduced, holding out her hand.

      “Mm,” Mouth full of bacon now absent her fingers, Annie turned and pointed toward the beverage end of the buffet table, thumb gesturing. “Sorry,” hand came to cover her mouth though Annie made no attempts to stop herself from grabbing more bacon ( she’d fill up on it if she could ). “I saw some over there. I travel enough where I know to scan the uh … continental breakfast buffets in hotels? You know, the scrambled eggs that look like play-doh. But those look really good. I think there’s peppers in them …” 

      She was a foodie, for sure. Only exercise kept her weight down, and Annie was just as much of an exercise junkie as she was a food junkie. Another crunch of bacon and she side-stepped toward the eggs in question. “I have a packing method now. There’s some clothes I never really unpack that kind of fit the bill of most places I travel. Though I have to admit I’ve been to less … tropical climates so I had to re-do my whole layout.”

Valerie followed the woman’s gesture and her eyes lit up. She quickly made her way over and grabbed herself a glass. “Like I said I owe you big time,” Valerie joked before taking a sip. She scooped a portion of eggs onto her plate after her companion. “I could never travel that much so hats off to you. I think I had three heart attacks on the way here,” Valerie admitted. She was glad her feet were firmly on the ground again. She knew planes were safe, but she still got anxiety thinking that there was a chance she’d end up smashed to pieces somewhere.

“The heat’s pretty easy, just bring less,” she joked, “I’m Val by the way and I’m from Vegas so I’m just relieved this place has actual water and a breeze.”

Valerie had changed out of her normal clothes and put on a bikini made for this place with a light cover-up. She wanted to check out the salt water pool and start the fun. She couldn’t square away if this was completely a vacation or if it was more of a work situation. Meeting people and connecting with them took effort and she always saw vacations as being the opposite of effort. Oh well, maybe she’d find a happy medium between the two. She grabbed a mimosa and headed for the pool. She sat down on the edge near someone and slid her feet into the the refreshing water. “Wow... this feels so good,” she grinned before taking a sip from her drink, “That sun is hotter than it looks.” @lirprb

“alright, wow,” muttered arlo at… where would he start? the picturesque surroundings, the pretty girls, the buffet…? “and we could win money for this? what’s the catch?” he tapped on the phone he’d been given, realising in a couple of minutes that he couldn’t access the usual sites like facebook and youtube. “ah, there it is. the phones are a downgrade.” with a shake of his head, he said, “this is all still so much more fun than my desk job, though.” he’d worked at an office prior to this, which was about as luxurious and action-packed as watching a snail crawl across a table. | @lirprb

Valerie frowned when the guy said their phones were a downgrade. It made sense when she thought about it and she guessed this was the best way to break her Instagram habit. “That kind of blows,” Valerie answered looking at his phone. She turned back to look at the other islanders. She’d finished unpacking or what she called unpacking and was hoping to maybe have some fun. She had no idea what to expect. “Oh yeah?” she asked turning back to look at the guy who was pretty cute now that she was noticing, “What’d you do back home? I’m Val by the way.” She offered him a smile and her hand for him to shake.

Valerie is a workaholic who tends to go hard in her work or go hard in her social life. She cares about her patients and cares about her friends and has issues saying no to anyone. Here’s a few more tidbits:

She’s had a few long-term relationships, but she tends to either get bored or fall someone who isn’t right for her. She tries to keep an optimistic attitude which is why she’s here.

She’s a radiologist at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. She was born and raised there and hasn’t found a reason to leave yet. She’s open to change, just hasn’t found the right opportunity.

All her siblings are married with children of her own which makes her the black sheep of the family. The only one who bugs her about it is her mom. She hopes that at least her trip to this island will satisfy her mom even if it doesn’t end in a happy ending for Valerie.

She considers herself an expert at casual sex, but if she likes someone she tries to hold off. It rarely works.

     “I think it speaks volumes about a person if they diverge immediately for the buffet rather than putting their things away.” She was, of course, speaking about herself. The platinum blonde couldn’t look happier than in that moment with a piece of delicious bacon pinched between her index finger and thumb. Directly behind her was her rolling bag of things with the duffel perched atop it — her method of execution evident that Annie traveled often and learned long ago how to take up as little space as possible when in public.

"Putting things away and packing them up again are the two worst parts of vacation,” Valerie replied to the blonde near her. Her own two suitcases were behind her. She offered the woman a tired smile. She was an awful flyer and had been up most of the night nervous about it. Luckily this buffet plus a few mimosas she hoped would bring her back up to normal status. Valerie helped herself to some of the aforementioned bacon and a croissant as well as some kind of fruit she couldn’t identify right away.

“Now if you can find me a mimosa new friend, I might owe you my life,” Valerie joked with a brighter smile before breaking off a small piece of bacon and eating it.
