oh no. i feel a winchesters rewatch coming.

if that was supposed to reassure her - then it was a failed attempt. lexie watched him with carefully guarded hues. abnormal - she was normally so warm with her emotions an open book and her heart on her sleeve. she drew a slow breath then exhaled, taking a step back as he came off the table. her brain was slow at processing while she tried to reassure herself that he was in fact real and in front of her.

wait. did he just say he hadn't meant for her to know?

a huff left her, "i don't know if you're trying to be soothing, reassuring, or something of the mix, but you're severely off beat here." a laugh left her but it wasn't all that amused. in fact, it likely came off as a psychotic break more than anything. at least she was animated. "no, hold on, full stop here." finally she was moving, blocking his path so he couldn't make a quick escape.

"i haven't heard from you in months. now you're here regrettably in front of me like i'm some big problem to avoid and kicking up a scene at my hospital." where she was definitely going to be getting the third degree. the clock was ticking down her final hour. she'd just have to figure out a way to avoid them all with a speedy exit.

lexie licked her lips and pressed them together she was speaking again, "have dinner with me.. you at least owe me that, don't you think?"

just as lexie huffs arthur feels a sharp spike of pain in his temple that makes him press his lips together to prevent himself from making a noise. he breathes through it, which also gives him a few seconds to think over what he'd said that may not have been as soothing or reassuring as he'd meant it to be. or, as it happened, the complete kerfuffle of a sentence he'd spoken aloud. apparently, he'd been hit upside the head a tad harder than he'd realized.

" full stopping. " hands raise up into a placating position. the unfortunate part about stopping is having to look the beautiful doctor right in the face. a face that haunted him these past few...wait, months? had it really been that long. arthur's brows pinch together. thoughts take a different route. he'd meant to call. reach out. something. it was only supposed to be a few days so she could have her space over whatever the fuck he'd done this time.

without meaning to, he curses to himself in welsh. shoulders hunch, ever so slightly, in exhaustion and pain. " that's not what i meant. " well, it sort of was. words are generally not his strong suit.

leaning forward, arthur presses his lips to the top of her head. " i don't regret being in front of you, love. " he speaks quietly enough that he hopes only she can hear. fingers from his good arm slide up the back of her neck loosely enough that she can step out of it if she wants to. " i took a contract over in bellevue because we...the space... i... " an exhale pushes too loudly through his nose. " i didn't realize it's been months. that sounds fuckin' stupid, i know. "

what hurt is that, right then, with the scent of her filling his lungs, arthur can't even remember what caused the space to begin with. one of them got mad. both of them. someone got loud so the other got loud and before anyone knew it there'd been talk of space. maybe we need to take a breather.

" aye, i can do dinner. " he fights the urge to kiss her hairline again and, instead, takes a step back so he can look into her eyes. " after your shift okay? or we can do tomorrow. how's something fancy sound? "

if asked, arthur would say that he leans towards pagan even though he's very ambivalent on religion as a whole. there is lingering emotions towards the holy roman empire ( and, you know ) due to their encroachment on his kingdom and what he heard in his mortal years from those who defected and those who sought refuge. at this point, he's lived a too long to believe in higher powers but he knows there are things other than human that exist. he believes in whatever is in his own power to protect the people he cares about.
