A soft chuckle left him at her words. “I am sure, but in my perspective, I am quite up there in some ways. Not everything is as it appears, but I am sure you are aware of that fact already, yes?” He could tell she was definitely human, but there was something else he was picking up on her.

Xander took the opportunity to crawl onto the other man’s shoulder and sat down. He let his tail drape next to him and kept his wings to his back. The Fae dragon already felt much safer than earlier. “You don’t mind?” He said at the offer. It was more help than he could really ask for. “I would very much appreciate that, thank you.”
“I would not have offered if I minded.” He knew what it felt like to be in the sun a little too long, he didn’t want that to happen to his friend. “Of course. In the meantime though, are you hungry? And have you had blood recently?” With his bottles, it certainly wouldn’t be a problem if he did need blood. He wasn’t sure how long the General would be stuck like that either, so he thought it’d be best to ask.

Xander was trying his hardest to find somewhere safe and not get stepped on at the same time. So far he’d had luck on not getting stepped on but a new location was difficult given his small legs. He was so focused on walking that he hardly heard the other Vampire and gave a startled squeak when he was lifted. He gripped tightly onto the other’s hand and looked up. “Oh, Larten… Yes, thank you, I think I do need it…”
Another chuckle left him, hearing the squeak leave the older Vampire. “I thought as much.” Carefully moving his hand, he brought it up to his shoulder so the other could climb onto it if he wanted. “If you would like, once it gets to be that time you can share my van so you do not have to worry about getting hurt.” Even with the other being as small as he was, it might be awkward to offer to share his coffin. It wasn’t as if anyone opened the van during the day time anyway.

Having spotted the small Dragon, the Vampire blinked a bit. That was certainly odd. Once he caught the scent coming from him though, he couldn’t help but chuckle a bit. “Need some help there, General?” Larten spoke as he gently picked him up.

“We have not met. Yet there is an air of something about you…” He frowned slightly, a hand reaching out, brushing through the air around the vampire, grasping at something unseen. His expression was placid, calm, unchanged as he tilted his head ever so slightly.
“I see.” The air of that creature was around him. This man’s personal timeline had been disrupted, but only subtly. That was how the bastard worked. He didn’t violate laws outright but altered outcomes.
How the Tsar loathed him. That agent of chaos. That spawn of cruelty–
Desmond Tiny.
“Forgive my abrupt appearance. I am no threat to you, less you ally yourself with that twisted creature Desmond Tiny.”
The Vampire raised an eyebrow at the stranger. He could tell the other wasn’t human, that’s for sure. “Ally? Hardly what I would call having to listen to that meddler. If it were up to me we would have never listened to him, but it is far too late for that.” Shaking his head a bit, he looked back at the other. “How does that old saying go? The enemy of my enemy is my friend? I am sure that applies here from how you spoke of him.”
“I might not be as easy to beat this time.” He retorted. “There’s some farmland outside of town, and about half a mile past that a nice wooded area.” Darren was fond of forest environments– his smaller form made it easier to use cover to his advantage. “If you’re up for it.”
“Oh I do not doubt that. I am the one training you after all.” Underestimating Darren would be a mistake, he knows that. “That sounds like it would be ideal. And I would not have suggested it if I was not up for it.”
“That is setting the bar pretty high.” He rubbed the back of his head. “I don’t know if I wanna wait another six years for a chance to challenge you during the festival.” There was a glint in his eye. “Come on, how about a spar? Loser cooks dinner.”
Larten chuckled a bit again at his assistant. “Truly that eager to get beaten again hm? Very well, let us move somewhere more appropriate for sparring though.” That way they don’t get in anyone’s way.
“I’m a lot stronger than I was twelve years ago, Larten.” It sounded like the cub Prince was challenging his instructor. “I wonder how old you were when you beat your Master— if you ever did beat Seba.” Another taunt, though it was all in good fun.
“I never said you were not, but you still lack some of the skill needed to best me.” Sounded like he was choosing to taunt right back. “I was exactly 124 when I bested him. Though I will admit it was a close one.”
“And you were pretty impressed with how close I got.” He boasted right back. “We’ve had our fair share of close scrapes, and I’m sure we’ll have more. As long as we stick together we can pull through.”
“I’m looking forward to the day when I save your butt.” He grinned. “Or at least when I get a one-up on you in sparring.”
“It might have just been because I was so focused, but you were very quiet in your approach!” The older Vampire chuckled softly again. “Well then you will be waiting a very long time! I will not allow you to beat me so easily.”

“Alright, I’ll admit that maybe I was a bit of a brat at the start.” Darren nudged his mentor. “I don’t know how you were able to put up with my immature antics.”
“Maybe? Might I remind you, you and Evra attempted to kill me!” Chuckling softly, he shook his head a bit. “Was not the first time I have had to deal with things like this.”
((So I’ve only been able to read book 1 and 2 of Larten’s saga, but based on how things went with Evanna, I’ve come to the conclusion that had he not royally fucked up, he really would of had a chance with her. Knowing she can see parts of the future, she probably knew drinking that much wine coupled with the fact he asked her to transform could have led to a few different outcomes, but she still chose to take a chance.
She knew there was a chance he’d try to kiss her, but yet she didn’t say no to changing her form for him. She thought he wanted to dance, which makes me think that was one of the outcomes she saw so she thought it would turn out ok. I think if Desmond Tiny hadn’t been watching over Larten things would have turned out differently. I really think Larten could have won her over.

It’s been a very long time since I read the LC Saga books, but from what I remember this sounds pretty damned accurate. I never thought of this.

“Sick? When did you get sick?” He was fairly curious. “Was it the purge or– something else?” He had to remind himself that Crepsley was pretty old– how old, he wasn’t sure. He’d probably been around for things like the Great Depression, he World Wars– things he’d studied back when he was in school.
School. There was something he hadn’t thought about in over a decade. Life and death situations had a way of detaching you from things. He turned his gaze away from his companions, wondering for a moment what his family was doing right now. Annie would have to be in her twenties– maybe she had a family of her own. A partner to make her happy, some kids, a career.
His parents. Thinking of them caused Darren to feel a painful knot in his chest. Sometimes at night he could still hear his father’s cries, his mother’s wail from that night he faked his death. His hands shook as he took a calming breath. No sense dwelling on the past and what he’d left behind.
“What were your parents like?” The question slipped out of him before he could stop it.
“No, it was not the purge. I did not have to go through that, I was only a half Vampire for a few years. This was worse. I have told you before, how we do not succumb to illness easily, correct? Well, when it does manage to hit us, it ends up lasting for months. Most even end up dying from it, it is that bad.”
There were times he’d often wished it had ended him, if he were being completely honest. Maybe then Malora, Gavner and Arra would still be alive. Then again, Tiny probably wouldn’t have let him die then, either. Hearing the last question, he blinked a bit before looking off to the side.
“I think you should ask another question.” Ever since he’d seen his father as an old man hovering over a grave for himself and Vur, it wasn’t an easy subject for him to talk about. Larten often wished he had said something to him that day, instead of just hiding and observing.
“Sounds like you’ve got a thing with alcohol and women– no wonder you don’t like to drink.” Darren couldn’t keep himself from chuckling. Lighthearted moments like this had become rare in his life, and they were cherished dearly. “I didn’t know you knew her before she became a vampire.“
The route Darren had taken was unconventional, but the Prince was unaware of just how unconventional it was. “I’m trying to imagine young you– was your hair always so wild? That was a pretty long time ago.” He tapped his chin, now he’d tease a bit. “Did you get to wear a powdered wig? Were they itchy?” Sure, taunting Crepsley about his age seemed redundant, but it was still fun.
“You seem to get it now.” Even if he was only teasing. Hearing the comment, he gave a nod. “Yes. Mika Ver Leth was actually her master when I next met her. I do not believe he was the one who blooded her, however.”
Another sigh was given. “No I always kept it well managed, aside from the time I got sick.” What a ride that had been. “And no, those were only for those who were considered noble or wealthy. I only lived with my family until I was thirteen.” Sure, he was being loose with what he was saying, but he didn’t see any harm in finally opening up about a few things.
