my favorite insect fact ever is that nocturnal dung beetles can actually see the milky way and even use it in order to navigate! i think thats so crazy to think about!!
dung beetles are my favorite beetles ever, but i dont really share that because people think theyre gross. i hope this allows other people to see how cool they actually are! i also love seeing them fly theyre so sick and rad.
Here's Bagheera kiplingi, also called the Vegetarian Jumping Spider. They're the most herbivorous species of spider! Residing in Central America, most of their diet is made of nodules on acacia leaves called Beltian bodies. These nodules are created by native ant species; to gain access, the spider has to sneak past little ant guards! Their diet isn't exclusively herbivorous, as they're known to occasionally steal ant larvae from the nest. They're opportunistic carnivores, as are most herbivores!
This is a Dragon Mantid, Toxodera integrifolia! They're extremely rare and the genus is known for it's incredible mimicry; this species in particular mimics the beautiful flowers of SE Asia!

quick question about dung beetles: are they all nocturnal? (I saw your pinned post and was curious)
some are but not all of them, it depends on the species. for the dung beetles that arent nocturnal, they use the sun to help them navigate rather than the milky way. the pattern of polarized light (light waves) helps them around! i guess its not as cool as the nocturnal ones but i still think its pretty neat! thanks for the question!! dung beetles are one of my favorite insects so im glad you asked! :)
