"A letter to Martin"

Spoilers for TES:Oblivion and implied spoilers for Shivering Isle.

This letter takes place after the Main questline and during the Shivering Isle questline.

"Dear Martin,

I know this letter will never find you, know that this is my sorrow. I will never see your face again, never to hear your voice. One day your memory will be fleeting and I won't be able to recall your face. I will go mad.

I wish badly to see you one more time, even if it was for you to chastise me for what I am doing. Much like you did when I brought you the daedric artifact. In the moment I felt angry and confused, I only did what was necessary. But now I understand why. Some days I wish I had never met you, to keep me from the pain I feel when I think of you.

Sometimes I feel angry at you, I would say damn everyone, damn this world, everyone could cease to exist as long as we could disappear together. I started life without you and I must end my life without you. This is the stinging truth of my reality.

As the Greymarch is approaching, I have agreed to assist the Prince of Madness. Helping a Daedric Prince was the last thing I have expected I would do. I know you may shame me or be angry with me, but I feel this is something I must do. I know you will never understand.

I hope you will never know I'm doing this. But if you do, please know I am not betraying you and your ideals. You would want to help the people, you have always considered the masses. As you becoming the Avatar of Akatosh was your final act of love, let this be mine. Let this be proof of my devotion to your cause.

Do you perhaps mean the sun-god Auri-El, known in the Empire as Akatosh, the very god your son is devoted to and would eventually invoke, at the cost of his own life? Thinking about all the things Martin says to the HOK. HOK may not be the most important person in the grand scheme of things and anyone could have done their job, but Martin cares about them, he loves them. He shows that in the way he speaks to them and he doesn't deminish the important things they have done. They were an important part of his life and story. They may not be remembered by the world but he will always remember them.

Guys trust em when I tell you I have over-anylized the main questline for Oblivion, I KNOW MY SHIT.

And also the HOK isn't meant to be the characters in the other questlines. It is hard to explain, but like different people are doing different things. Unlike Skyrim where it is you veing the chosen one for everything. I didn't like that part about Skyrim.

HOK isn't the listener, HOK isn't the new Gray Fox, HOK isn't the new Arch-Mage, HOK isn't the new Gramd-Champion. HOK is the right hand of Martin Septim/The Grand Champion (In the place of Martin Septim) and the new Sheogorath, that is all.

People who are saying HOK is the main character cause him and Martin are one together...Which I do like that Idea but in simple terms He is the sun and HOK is the moon. You are nothing without him and you are only a supporting role in his story. HOK can never be anything without Martin, HOK could have been anyone and it wouldn't matter, Martin cannot. I fear HOK is not as important as we want them to be but that truly makes the fact that Martin cares for them so much beautiful. They weren't meant to be in every universe or anything special like that, they just happened to connect and Martin felt so strongly about them and couldn't imagine a life where they do not appear in it.

martin septim seeing the hero of kvatch for the first time and immediately being drawn to them

and when they say they’re here for him? that he’s the son of the late emperor, and they’re bound to sweep him away to jauffre? the way they look at him, like he’s the one thing that matters in the Nine’s almighty world. oh, that will take some getting used to.

he is cautious at first, of course— he knows because his time before he was a priest that the instant allure of anything is something to be wary of. by the time they’ve almost arrived to weynon priory, the two have made camp out in the wilderness beneath the moons of Nirn so many times, shared a campfire for warmth between their bedrolls night after night, he can tell when they’ve fallen asleep by the sound of their breath, the characteristic twitches of their legs.

he also knows how to tell when his hero is having a nightmare, the plane of oblivion come back to haunt them even in their sleep. knows when to wake them up, to lull them into a calmer state of sleep with a little conversation, perhaps telling them stories of his youth, his days as a farmer’s son. sweet nothing tales of him chasing runaway chickens around the yard. anything to keep the daedra from visiting them in their sleep. when the hero asks him to pull his bedroll closer to theirs, he knows it’s over for him.

oh, he’s smitten. completely gone. but the hero doesn’t know; how could they? they’re bound by their word to uriel, their late emperor, the father he never knew. that was all this was, wasn’t it? first, he was their mission. then, he was just someone familiar. someone who knew at least a fraction of the horror that the hero experienced inside the oblivion gate because he bore witness to the siege of kvatch.

nothing would come of these feelings he had. nothing could.

until the night before they’re to arrive at weynon priory, he hears the hero mutter his name in their sleep. so softly at first, that he could have been hearing things. but then when the hero repeats themselves, a few minutes later… well, perhaps his situation wasn’t as hopeless as he thought. he can’t help the grin that tugs at the corners of his lips as he closes his eyes, falling asleep to the sound of his hero’s breath.

I think about how the Hero of Kvatch is not supposed to be the main character. Even when Uriel is speaking to you he says, "In your face I behold the Sun's companion." Martin is the Sun and you are his companion.
