What followed such a hearty declaration was an almost somber silence, a realisation at what would follow and a solemn acceptance. Though an unrealistic scenario, he couldn't help but grieve what he knew he would lose if the chance ever arose.

You have no idea how MADDENING it is to be trapped making the same mistakes and hurting anyone that I care for even the slightest amount. Getting abandoned and discarded again and again !! ❞

Shallow, shaky breaths, only barely holding himself together as a slightly trembling hand reaches out and pours out another drink, disregarding the rules of this game completely by now. He needed it — anything to numb the pain and the screaming inside his brain reminding him how little anything he did mattered anymore. How each action always bore the same results. How desperately he wanted to run away from it all, how that very thought made him a COWARD.

Like a snake devouring its own tail, spinning round and round on the wheel of fate with no escape, only the knowledge that he will continue on and on this cycle until the stars he once cherished die out and the hourglass of time finally expends the last of its sand. Until there is nobody and nothing left for him to destroy but himself.

And yet he takes another drink, the scar over his chest aching as the emptiness within his chest pulls him just a little further down. A dizzying feeling that makes him sick to his stomach ... Or wait, is that the alcohol's doing ??

❝ ... I mean do you really, truly believe that someone such as I — someone whose done all that I have ... That they would even deserve to feel something so magical ?? To feel even a single moment of genuine happiness ?? Because if you do then you are terribly naive and I'd advise you to have less faith in those who wouldn't think twice about destroying all you care about. We don't deserve it. ❞

Without even being told to, he poured another drink and immediately downed it, frame visibly deflating as the once great demon king's hands moved to his face, shielding his eyes from sight. No one could be allowed to witness the mess as he unraveled alone on that bar stool. No one could be allowed to see the tears that fell down his cheeks. A wretched BEAST hiding his own shame and guilt behind a mask that finally began to crack.

Then a voice much quieter, meant for no one's ears but his own.

a searing pain. a gaping wound in their chest that only grows larger and larger with each passing day and every mistake until it consumes them completely. a weight they must bear yet it is so overwhelmingly heavy now that it threatens to crush them with every additional sin; with every brief glance at those they've wronged. it is immeasurable and has no end in sight, no repentance ever enough to fill the hole it leaves.

yet it's nothing compared to the pain suffered by those they've hurt. so little in the face of the torment they've caused most anyone else they've come into contact with. if possible they would hope it grow worse somehow ( they'd deserve it ) and maybe someday destroy them completely to cease the cycle of sorrow and agony that follows them with every step.

probably to the furthest reaches of space where nobody would ever find them again, not because they particularly value being alone or find others irritating but instead due to their self-loathing. they genuinely believe the universe and those within it would be better off without them in it, regardless of any evidence of the contrary.

deep down they know that they're destined to fuck up the lives of everyone they come into contact with; that even the smallest mistake they make could devastate a person so horrifically that they never recover. they've done it time and time again both by accident and purposefully, and destroying people's lives stopped being entertaining a very, very, very long time ago. it's better this way for the sake of the others they'd hurt otherwise to go as far as physically possible to reduce the amount of harm they're capable of.

also they kind of see it as speeding up the inevitable — that if everyone around them that they would grow to care about will either abandon them for all the cruelty they've inflicted within their past or eventually pass on when they cannot, then it's better to reduce the eventual suffering by disappearing early. it lets them maintain some sense of control that lucifer desperately needs in their life but often struggles to keep. yes it's a cowardly way out of their atonement for what they've done and they know that.

whether they could actually stay away for particularly long is another matter entirely.

Melancholy mixing with grief deep in the demon's eyes, the very word tainted by regrets and heartache for what they left behind so long ago. For what they'd stolen from the Gods themselves and crafted into a place for all to thrive held little for her now — nor had it done for longer than Lucillia cared to think about. Despite all the efforts they'd made, all they'd sacrificed to keep those who dwell within it safe ...

Really it was nothing more than a glorified prison for her now. All ties shattered and all responsibility given to another; now it could only ever hold the memories of all they'd lost. Of a life she could have had.

❝ Someday ... Perhaps I'll feel differently. It won't hurt as much then to be there, nor remind me of a time when I was a far worse person than I am now or the loneliness living like that brought with it. A day where I don't feel ashamed to walk those streets again. That would be ... Nice. ❞

No doubt the Hells were far better off without her in them, under a ruler who would take better care of them than she ever could. A place that wouldn't breed the same horrors she'd bore witness to time and time again yet felt so helpless to prevent. A fairer place that those within could proudly call 'home' rather than feeling the same dejection tumbling into the same pit of jaded heartache that had trapped her for so long.

Yes ... Things were better this way.

Left truly speechless, the Demon Lord finds herself staring at the bubblegum-pink girl in front of her, who even in the darkest of corners of the universe still managed to light up a room with the gentlest warmth. A kindness that was enough to melt even the King of the Hells' heart ( and not in the literal sense, which Lucillia had very much experienced and does not recommend. ) Goodwill that they most definitely did not deserve, yet this girl would hand out so freely like candy.

Yet despite her words ... Taken aback by his words, Lucillia takes pause, hand still on the door handle just moments after having excused herself for one reason or another. Still turned away from him, he'd miss the widening of her eyes as it started to sink in with every passing second, with each breath that suddenly felt far too heavy for her lungs. He'd miss the slight shake of her hand that the other needed to steady in a futile attempt to calm herself.

How PATHETIC for someone who'd once so proudly called herself the Demon King.

A voice that seems so unlike her, so much quieter and almost ... Scared. Scared that he's already realising the faults that plague her now where they didn't all that time ago. Scared that if he continues to look as closely as he is now that he'll see the cracks through the facade and know that the Lucillia that stands before him now is not the same as the one he fell so deeply in love with.

And what then ?? Would he abandon her like so many had before ?? Would he leave her with a cutting wound far deeper than the last ?? Or would he put up with it hoping for change and then grow to truly loath her if he could see how truly weak she'd become since their parting ??

Not yet ... She wasn't ready to lose him again just yet. So no matter how it hurt or how nauseating all the lies festering in her stomach would feel, the act must continue. At least for a little longer.
