6 layer screen print: layers were printed by stencils resembling laser cut module. The ink was blue with 1:5 ration puff ink to color ink

Once the ink design has puffed (see below). The design contain is a test to see if the ink would puff into the shape I have been exploring. It is also a proof of concept for 3D screen printing. A 3D shape can be split into horizontal layers, be screen printed with an expansive material, then be expanded. This gives me hope 3D screen printing could be used in to future, if more control exists and a different expansive material is used for the ink. The copper was used as a heat sync(to try to evenly distribute heat energy to the ink. It worked better than nothing, but one part of the form received too much heat and deflated some.

Screen print ink (with puff additive) printed onto a piece of glass (before heat is applied). The design contains 7 layers, and uses the same slice pattern as my final hand cut model.

The video is very blurry. Sorry ‘bout that, but it shows a puff-ink mixture screen printed onto a glass slide. 7 layers were printed, following the layered design of the models below. The concept was to test if multiple layers could be screen printed, then heated (so the ink puffs up) and creates a 3D shape. It worked! but there needs to be much more control to create something usable

Second set of models. The third image is an inverse shape that can be used to quickly make molded pulp structures of the surface of the screen print ink - untested.

The final image is the type of model I will use for my final. For the final model, I will use thinner layers, allowing for better resolution and white paper, which will be more easy to see the form.

Richard The-Design

Reference demonstrating interaction of a grid system that uses binary modules to create visual images and text from far away. Similar to digital displays or screen prints!

These images will inform the physical prototypes I make of the ink’s form.

The bottom set, uses a 1mm microscope slide to show the scale of the ink.

The second half of prototypes in the microscope-phone studies. This project required us to determine a focusing mechanism that allows are phone (in conjunction with a silicon lens) to take pictures of very tiny objects. The bottom continues exploration in a system that is portable, a “field microscope.” The top image is the working prototype I used to take the images for this project. It strays away from the portability and self-contained moving parts to allow for maximal photo-taking capabilities. It is inspired by the fine adjustments of a large-format camera.

First half of physical prototypes for my microscope design. In these explorations, I focused on portability, collection of objects to continue exploring later, switching between microscope/normal camera, and interchangeable zooms. One idea to increase stabilization was to create an affordance in the case that allows the user to balance the phone on a stable object present in their environment.
