He wasn’t answering again. What was a good streak seemed to have ended and Vanessa couldn’t help but think, was it worth it? He wasn’t opening up to her and she was sure he’d take a lot of convincing, but how could she try if he didn’t get back to her? Vanessa was upset, it was clear from her face to the way she started handling things. How would he feel if she did the same to him? Not good probably. In fact, they’d probably get into another argument, he’d probably doubt her loyalty… all the things that she was currently feeling.
She needed to get out of her apartment. Vanessa couldn’t sit there and sulk with her dog whenever he pulled shit like this. How was it that at times he was practically perfect, but at other times he was a complete asshhole? It didn’t make sense to Vanessa. She tried reaching out to Paige, but they were unavailable, Probably a work thing, she thought as she looked through her contacts and found some other choices that she enjoyed spending time with. Maybe even bitch with over this whole situation.
Vanessa needed to decompress, taking deep breaths, she tried. The brunette looked through her closet once the plan to go to a bar tonight was a go. Her friend’s boyfriend played in a band that was playing a show and Vanessa immediately thought of J and how he’d probably enjoy being there. In a slight moment, she wanted to invite him, but he didn’t seem to want to respond so that was out of the question. There were a variety of bands playing at this show, so she just thought she’d calm down and enjoy the rest of her night. He was probably just busy with work or something, he’d get back at her the next day. No big deal.
Picking an outfit, Vanessa found herself to be way calmer as she started up the shower. She thought of her texts, how the last one was probably super dramatic, but she was hurt and after having spoken to him about how she felt on being ghosted, she’d expect him to at least read out once. Even if it was a “Fuck off I’m busy.” She chuckled to herself. No that wouldn’t sit with her very well. However, as the droplets of hot water hit her skin, she couldn’t help but to also think, it was better than nothing. That frightened her. What had she gotten herself into? Vanessa got out of the shower and wiped her hand over her foggy mirror, looking at her face and sighing. Was there something wrong with her? Which was pretty melodramatic for just a day of not hearing from J but it was more than that. She told him how she felt. DIdn’t that count for anything?
Picking up her toothbrush and toothpaste, Vanessa thought of how she didn’t like repeating herself or confronting people for that matter. She didn’t want to fight with J, she was tired of fighting with J she just wanted the happy for a bit. Understanding that arguments were a normal part of any relationship, and it was going to happen again eventually, but she didn’t want it to be now. He should know, she’d spoken about how she felt, and he should know that it affects her when he leaves her hanging like that. Rolling her eyes and groaning in frustration, Vanessa continued to brush her teeth,
An hour later Vanessa was ready and she sprayed a bit of perfume before leaving her room. Saying goodbye to Cinnamon and making sure all the lights were off in her apartment before stepping out and locking the door behind her. She saw her friend’s car out front waiting for her and she got into the passenger seat with a small smile. “Hey, long time no see.” The girl leaned in to hug Vanessa and Van hugged back with an equally as excited smile. “I know, but that you for this, I really needed it.” Her friend Emily smiled and nodded her head. “No problem. It’ll be a lot of fun. Help keep your mind off things for a bit.” That was exactly what the brunette needed and she buckled up as they drove off to the small bar in LA. “Just a warning, it’s a little cramped and sweaty in there, Can get uncomfortable, probably not your scene, but it’s totally worth it, the bands tonight are all really good. Tyler showed me the lineup.”
It definitely was a lot to take in and the place was already crowded but Vanessa managed. Fascinated by everyone in there. This was her first show, ever and it was a whole new world to her. “This way, got a table over here.” Van followed Emily’s lead and sat down at the table with her. She met Emily through work on the Streak. She was an actress too and she played on a similar show name Legends. Emily was someone Vanessa could trust and vice versa. “So what’s going on, why do you need to take your mind off of things?” Vanessa was no a bit hesitant to say anything. Not wanting to dampen the night with her emotions. Not wanting to be a burden. “Just, stupid guy shit.” Em nodded her head, looking as the band up next started to set up. “What guy shit?” She asked, and Van sighed. “I’m being ghosted for the second time by this guy I’m dating even though we already talked about it.” Her icy blue eyes looked at Vanessa and she furrowed her brows. “Some guy is ghosting you? Vanessa King. Does he know who you are?”
She wanted to cry, not knowing what she didn’t deserve such friends like Emily, Paige, Noah, George… etc. They were all so good to her. “Stop, I’m no one special.” Emily put her hands up in defense and stopped Vanessa in her tracks. “No, Vanessa, you are someone special, and if this guy doesn’t see that enough to not ghost you, then he doesn’t deserve you.” It was so much more complicated than that, Van thought as she nodded and shrugged her shoulders. “It’s just that I like him, and it’s not his fault he goes through a lot—He can be very insecure. He’s afraid I’m going to get bored and leave and I like him, I don’t want to leave.” At this Emily sipped on her drink, staying silent. “I’m sorry, It’s just complicated.” Em shook her head. “And I get that, babe, but it’s still not an excuse.” She said firmly, taking another sip. “What does this asshole even look like?” Vanessa chuckled and shook her head. “Don’t call him that, I’ll show you.”
Vanessa pulled up a picture of J and showed her, Emily looking at the picture intently and looking at the picture then at Vanessa. “He’s cute. Kinda actually,” She stopped looking at the guitarist on stage at the moment. “Kinda, actually…. What?” Vanessa asked, confused as she retrieved her phone. “Kinda actually looks like the guy holding the guitar on stage right now.” The brunette turned around and spotted J, completely confused as to what was going on. So he could get on stage and never tell her, but he couldn’t sing a stupid song for her and she was the only one listening? There were a lot of things she felt at the moment. Very little were happy emotions. “That’s, that’s J.” Emily looked at J and smirked. “Guess we figured out why he ghosted you. Did you know he was in a band?” No, was Vanessa’s initial reaction, but she didn’t say anything. Instead, she grabbed her phone, got up and took a video of the band playing. J specifically. She had every intention of posting it on her social media so that he’d see that she was there. That she knew, and hopefully that he got the hint of her being a little upset.
“Found you.” She captioned the video on her Instagram and returned to the table where Emily was ordering another drink. “Did he see you?” Vanessa shook her head and looked down at her phone. “I just ordered us a round of shots.” Looking up from her phone, Vanessa smirked and took a deep breath. “Good, I’m going to need it.” They both laughed and Vanessa looked back at J. Despite being mad at him, she was happy to see him. Like every time she saw him, it gave her like butterflies or something. And he looked fantastic with a guitar. “You’re drooling.” Vanessa reacted quickly and Emily laughed, “I’m fucking with you.” Vanessa rolled her eyes. Assshole.” Van whispered and shook her head. She didn’t want to approach J. She wanted him to see her first.

V: Good morning babe what's up?
five hours later:
V: Guess you're busy I'll talk to you later!
Six hours later:
V: Hope you're having a good day I'll talk to you whenever you decide you want to talk to me I guess.

Noah checked his watch, knowing he should probably get back to his apartment and return a few calls. He wanted to spend more time with her but if he was honest with himself, he didn’t trust himself to not get emotional again. He was holding it together well now but he needed some time to decompress, to process what seemed to be them finally closing the door on the romantic part of their relationship. “I should probably head home,” he said with a soft smile as he gathered their trash and threw it away. “But I’ll text you when I’m free next week. Is that okay?” He smiled and held his arms open wide for her. “Come on in here, one more hug for the road, yeah?”
It was probably for the best, she thought to herself and nodded her head in understanding. “ Okay, no problem,” Vanessa said as she started to get up again, still holding on to Cinnamon’s leash. “Yeah, that’d be perfectly fine.” Nessa smiled and waited for him to finish throwing away their things before she turned in the direction to walk back. That as until he asked for one last hug and she nodded with a small smile. “Of course.” The short woman got close and hugged Noah tightly, taking a few moments to linger there and sigh in a content manner. “Thank you for all of this.” Her eyes were closed, but she opened them once the words left her lips. Finally, Vanessa pulled herself away and smiled fondly at him. “Walk me back?”
noah-levinstein:
“Hey, it’s the least I can do after everything you’ve done for me,” he said honestly. She may not know it but being with her made Noah see that maybe his life wasn’t destined to be one of loneliness. that he could enjoy time with another person, feel worthy of another person’s love. The first time Vanessa had told him she loved him was still one of his favorite memories til this day and despite their breakup, he was grateful for every moment they had. He regretted breaking up with her but that was something he had to live with and in the back of his head he was sure that it was the right thing. She didn’t just deserve better than him, she deserved the best. And Noah knew he wasn’t at that place, or deserving enough to be that person. And if this new guy made her happy then who was he to stand in the way? What gave him the right to assume that he was the only one who could make Vanessa as happy as he had. So he had to be an adult about it, he had to take responsibility for his mistakes and learn how to move forward, So they both could be the best they could be and love as much as they could.
“And you’ll always be special to me,” he replied with a sweet smile, going back to his ice cream for a moment as he tried to calm the beating of his heart. Perhaps if he was more bold like Killian or Nora he would have fought for another chance for her, her new relationship be damned. But he was of the opinion that people didn’t really owe you anything and he wasn’t owed a second chance, nor did he think himself deserving and he didn’t want to let her down a second time. “How about uh, next time we hang out we can take the dogs to that new dog park down the beach?”
“Good.” It was all smiles with Noah, even if it was sad smiles, it was still smiles, and that was one of the major things Vanessa would always remember about her time around him. How they could have intense conversations, smiling throughout, or say nothing at all and still manage to smile. They were honestly a beautiful couple and though she wished they had lasted, circumstances were different and here they were. “The dog park sounds perfect, cinnamon would love that.” Van looked down at her dog again and smiled fondly at her as she discovered that she never left her side. Her loyal companion. Vanessa finished her ice cream and got up to throw the container away before coming back.
“Anything we should do now or should we start heading back?” Not that she wanted to get rid of Noah, she’s enjoyed her time with him, and she hoped despite the dramatic turn that he did too. However, she wasn’t sure how much longer they should hang out. What was an appropriate time to say goodbye? Especially after their whole conversation about boundaries.
noah-levinstein:
“Hey, hey, hey,” he said softly and leaned forward, reaching for her hand out of instinct. “I’m not going anywhere okay? I’m right here.” He gave her hand a squeeze but when she mentioned boundaries he pulled away, sitting up straight to give her his attention. “Okay, I respect that. We can make plans and keep things less pressured, maybe less time the two of us alone,” he said, though it wasn’t exactly what he wanted. But he also couldn’t push his own boundaries because he just missed being around her. “Hey, I’m here to stay, okay? You’r stuck with me.” He said and offered a reassuring smile. “We’re okay. I-I’m happy for you, okay? I want you to be happy. You deserve that. I’ll find my happiness one day too.”
Vanessa looked down at their hands and nodded her head slowly—feeling well assured now. When Noah dropped her hand she had to remind herself that it was the right thing to do, of course, it was. So why did her hand feel so cold? Vanessa sighed and smiled at him. “You’re stuck with me too,” Vanessa said quietly, happy he understood her terms and was willing to respect them. He was wonderful and that made her feel all the more emotional. She used her other hand to pet Cinnamon, a subtle distraction from how she felt at the moment. “Thank you for being so wonderful about this, and the ice cream,” Noah told her he was happy for her and Vanessa smiled softly, knowing he’d find happiness too and that they’d never forget how important they are to each other. “I’ll never forget the things you’ve done for me. How special you’ll always be to me... I’ll be happy for you too.” Her smile was bright now as she ate a little more of her ice cream. She couldn’t help but think to herself, was this closure? It felt like closure.
jhcrmcns:
Making sure his seat was adjusted comfortably, he listened to her plans for the night and shrugged. He loved Mexican food and didn’t have any other options in mind, so he was down to go wherever she pleased for the night. “That sounds great,” he smiled at her, still leaning slightly towards her from the kiss she had planted on his cheek earlier. “I can’t wait.”
As the car moved, J leaned more comfortably into his seat, head moving back to press against the headrest. He didn’t want to distract her, but she broke the silence, so he took that opportunity to tell her about his day. “Just busy, mostly. Going to work, I have about three months left on my contract so I’m beginning to look into other companies and see what they have to offer, although nothings in works yet and nothing serious has come up. I think things might pick up once spring actually hits.” Brown eyes moved from the road to look at the woman’s profile, a smile taking over his mouth almost immediately, grinning from ear to ear. “You’re so pretty,” he commented, looking back to the road ahead after a moment. “I’m sorry I made you have to miss me, I was just really into what was going on and I guess I’m kind of flakey, so that didn’t keep me in contact with you. I kept going ‘I’m gonna text her after this,’ and then it would happen and I’d have forgotten what I was going to do. Or I’d tell myself to call you in the morning and I’d end up oversleeping and rushing to work or something.”
James knew that wasn’t a real excuse, but it was all he could offer. He didn’t remember everything and was generally bad at the whole dating thing, so it made sense he’d pull something shitty like this. “I missed you, too,” he assured her, now watching people through the window as they walked down the sidewalk. California was really a different world than Virginia and he still hadn’t gotten used to it. “What did you do while I was ghosting you?” He joked, looking back to her briefly and trying to gauge her reaction, because he knew it was a shitty thing for him to do.
Vanessa was pleased that he approved of her plans for the night. She recalled a time they were texting and how he said she never decided on anything. So she wanted to be bold and take him out on a date. The fact that he approved of her decisions made her feel more confident that the night was going to be a success. And why wouldn’t it be? She was with J and having a good time. That alone was enough for a good time. At least she thought so. “Yay!” She smiled, giggling.
When J mentioned what’s been going on with work, Vanessa kept her eyes forward but she nodded her head so he knew she was listening. Working with contracts was something she could relate to as an actress. “Oh okay, I’m sure something you like will come up. From what I can tell you’re a hard worker and you’re very serious about your job, so no doubt in my mind you’ll get something good once this contract is up.” Van smiled as the GPS told her to turn right towards the beach. His compliment caught her off guard but she appreciated it. Stealing a glance, Vanessa smiled at him and held out her hand for him to take. “Thanks, handsome.” Her voice was soft as she continued to smile, looking at the road now as she was careful not to cross the limit. Cops in Hermosa being buggers for tickets. “J it’s okay, things happen. Just find the time to tell me about it next time yeah? Just a short hey I’ll be gone for work talk to you when I can would be perfect. I get that you’re busy and I won’t bother you. I promise.” Aside from that, she accepted his apology and she appreciated that she at least got one. “Thank you for apologizing,” Vanessa said after some silence, driving through downtown. They should be close now.
J saying he missed her too brought another smile to her face. Vanessa worried a lot. Worried that things were one-sided mostly, but every time they saw each other he somehow found a way (without knowing) that it wasn’t. That everything was fine. “Good, I was hoping you did.” There was a chuckle after, stealing her last glance at him, giving him a wink before the GPS told her their destination was on the right. She bit her lip at his question, not wanting to laugh because ghosting someone wasn’t funny and neither was being on the other side of it, but she was just so happy around J she let out a small chuckle. “Nothing really. Just worked, hung out with friends and Cinnamon. Missed you. It was pretty easy going.” Except it really wasn’t and she worried a lot, but the actress didn’t want to be dramatic. Not at this time. Van turned into the parking lot and found a place to park soon after she did. Usually, she’d just valet, but they didn’t seem to have one. “Okay, we’re here which is amazing because I’m so ready to eat.”
noah-levinstein:
Noah hadn’t thought his words would spark such an emotional reaction but he felt dumb for thinking that it could be casual. He wrapped his arms around her tightly and rubbed her back softly. “It’s okay,” he whispered, “It’s okay,” he reassured her and pressed his lips to her temple. He closed his eyes for a moment, squeezing her a little tighter before he pulled back to look at her, his hands rest on her shoulders. He looked at her a moment longer before turning to the counter to order their ice cream. He was quiet as paid and then took their cups over to a small table, crouching down to feed Cinnamon a few treats he had also bought. When he took his seat he finally looked at her and let out a breath. “I don’t want to make things harder for you, Ness,” he said honestly and took a spoonful of ice cream. “I-I miss you and I want to be in your life but I dont..I dont want to hurt you more than I have.” He cleared his throat and adjusted himself in his seat. “I just want you to be happy.”
Vanessa didn’t like this. It felt like a goodbye all over again.looking at Noah she stayed silent, eyeing him over as she took a bite of her ice cream. “Noah... You’re not leaving my life.” She said simply, taking another bite of ice cream—Cinnamon at her feet. “This is not some shitty surprise goodbye.” What needed to be set were boundaries. Not goodbyes. Vanessa hated goodbyes. “I get it, it’s hard for us, and I’m seeing someone and it’s just hard but we’re setting boundaries, not saying goodbyes.” She was rambling a bit at this point because her nerves were getting the best of her. “Uh the hanging out, can’t be random, we have to let each other know. The hugging put at a minimum, and there, that’s all i can think of, but it works and we’ll be fine as friends no matter how hard it is sometimes, we will get through this.” without a doubt, losing Noah again would be like a second heartbreak. She couldn’t handle it. Not right now. “Please don’t go...” Was her last and final plea, looking at him with sad eyes.
noah-levinstein:
Babe. He said the word in his head as she cut herself off and he could almost hear her saying it. He could remember the first time she had said it and he had been stupidly happy. She had been the first woman he had seriously been with since establishing the practice and she was everything he could have dreamed of. She made him more fun, made him more interesting. She was a freaking superstar and he always felt so in awe that he got to be with her, got to hold her at night and kiss her good morning. He missed her calling him babe, whether it was half asleep when she was turning over and urging him to go back to bed, whether it was when they were spending an ample amount of time in bed, or when she was laughing and telling him to stop being silly. He had tried his hardest with her but he knew he could have tried harder. Still, the conversation just took him around in circles. The night he had told her they should break up had been painful to say the least and he still got choked up thinking about. Noah was a deeply emotional person, which wasn’t always the best being a lawyer but he had found his ways to cope. But when it came to relationships, he fell hard, always gave too much and never left any for himself.
“Of course,” he said finally, smiling over at her before he willed himself to keep his eyes ahead. He let them slip into a comfortable silence, doing his best to compose himself as they got to the ice cream shop. “Should we..go with the usual?” He smiled softly as they got in line and he met her eyes. “I’ve missed you,” he said finally, unable to help himself as he looked at her.
He didn’t ignore it, she sighed and kept walking forward. Feeling guilty for the slip. Looking down at Cinnamon, she just carried on and waited for Noah to catch up, not asking him anything in relation to almost calling him babe, like she had so many times before. It was weird that it was inappropriate now. She hated that she couldn’t and that was the truth. There was silence with tension that she tried not to think about but she did anyway because her mind was racing. Why’d she had to fucking do that to the both of them? Why couldn’t she just say Noah and avoid all this shit? She didn’t want to think about how much she missed being with him, not while she was dating J. He spoke again and Vanessa cracked a smile. “The um, the usual is perfect.” Her voice was soft and she pursed her lips. Then Noah said it and it brought tears to her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She’s just been waiting for him to say it for so long she didn’t think she ever would hear it. However, the timing was shit and she was also mad at him for saying it now. Yet she hugged him and nodded her head. “I miss you too.” Her voice cracked a little and she closed her eyes giving in fully to the hug.
noah-levinstein:
“Anytime,” he said with a sweet smile, meaning every word he had said. “I know you do.” He nodded and pulled away from her. “Yeah, take your time.” He cleaned up his place at the table, finishing off his glass of wine before he moved towards the door. He caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror and took and took a deep breath as he smoothed down his shirt and fixed his tie. “Ready to go?” He smiled as Cinnamon came running along with her and he opened the door for the two of the, the gesture all too familiar to him. He ignore the familiarity, swallowing down his emotions as they stepped outside into the cool Hermosa Beach air. “You’re gonna be alright,” he said softly as they walked, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his pants. “Hopefully you’re feeling a little better.”
A lot of times, Vanessa wondered to herself why she allowed Noah to continue to be a part of her life despite giving up on her. That was a harsh way of putting it, but it still worked. And the reason was that of moments like this. He may have been a workaholic, but he was a fantastic friend. As she got Cinnamon ready, putting on a pair of flats on herself, she thought of him and how happy they could’ve been. Maybe. If they worked out, but she didn’t think that way anymore. She couldn’t afford to. He wasn’t changing and she was seeing someone. It shouldn’t matter anymore, but it did to her. People who entered Vanessa’s life mattered to her. She didn’t have much of a family so she found solace in her friends and relationships. Perhaps that lead to an unhealthy dependency, but it was how she worked. “Ready.” She grabbed a jacket on the way out and smiled her thanks as he held the door open for her and Cinnamon to pass—always the gentleman. “Yeah, I’ll be fine... I’m actually feeling a hell of a lot better, thank you B—Noah.” Fuck. She hoped he could ignore that. “Thank you.”
jhcrmcns:
J felt that during his time of being selfish and avoiding speaking to the girl he was dating, he just had found a more realistic way to avoid more arguing. Sure, he really was busy – when wasn’t he? – but he could’ve texted or called, and he knew it hurt her feelings which made him only upset with himself. When she had texted him, James felt that rush of small butterflies at the display of her name on his phone. “Yes, baby,” he replied in a quick text.
“Maverick,” brown eyes darted to his dog from his phone, shoving it into his pocket as he spoke to her. “You need to be good so daddy doesn’t get upset when he gets home.” He had already let her outside to go potty, so now it was time to confine her to the living room. James though, for a moment, maybe he should have another dog for her to play with. “I’m sorry,” he apologised, putting up the XL baby gate to block her from the rest of the house. “I love you,” he assured her, hand moving to pet her large head over the gate ( although he knew she could totally jump over and clear it if she really wanted. )
With that, he headed out the door and towards the pretty Range Rover that was parked in front his house. They were expensive, like 50k just for a basic after fees and taxes, decent ones hitting towards 90 thousand. Although he wouldn’t admit it, J immediately felt uncomfortable and reminded that Vanessa had money and he didn’t feel worthy, she seemed way out of his class. It wasn’t that he wanted to make more money or that he was intimidated, he just didn’t even really have friends who had money because it made him feel insecure. He thought about someone else for a moment and how he’d felt the same with them, shaking his head and their face out of his thoughts when he realised he was just standing with his hand on the passenger door handle.
“Sorry,” he apologised, immediately after opening the door and getting into the seat. “I was thinking about Maverick.” It was a lie, but a white lie. “I did remember to leave her food out, so don’t worry,” he continued, jokingly. “Where are we headed?”
Her anxiety intensified when he texted back, looking towards the front door, waiting for him to come out, with a smile on her face. When he finally did, just like her anxiety, her smile intensified and she unlocked the doors. Despite everything that’s happened, seeing him always made her feel better. When he just stood there, however, she was a little confused, but let it go. Then when J got in and explained he was thinking of Maverick she understood completely. “No problem!” Vanessa started before leaning in and giving him a small kiss on the cheek. “Hi, baby.” The brunette said with a bright smile, putting her car in drive and pulling away from the curb.
“There’s this place on the beach near the strand called Palmilla Cocina Y Tequila. It’s Mexican cuisine, and it’s outside! So that’s a plus.” It was such a beautiful night, she didn’t want to waste it. Driving out of his neighborhood, Vanessa kept her eyes on the road but stole one or two glances his way. “So how have you been, aside from busy?” It was a whole other feeling being around J. He always smelled good, that was for sure and his style put a smile on her face. Vanessa enjoyed herself with him. “I’ve missed you.” She added softly, stopping at a red light.
@jhcrmcns
It had been a long bit since she’s seen J and it was something that needed to change. With a text and a yes, Vanessa quickly freshened up and headed for the road, remembering vividly where J lived. Thinking back at their texts she smiled a little, enjoying his sense of humor. Like dad jokes, but she enjoyed them. It brought a smile to her face. Parking her range rover in front of his house, thinking back on the night of the party and how packed it was. Crazy how clean and empty his house was now. Peaceful.
“Hey i’m here.”
She texted as she made sure everything in her car was neat seeing as he’s never been in it. She was weird about things like that. Making sure everything was in order so they didn’t worry about anything else but their opinion on Vanessa as person and not hot she lives. The less attention drawn, the better. Before Van turned down the music in her car, She looked at herself in the rearview mirror, and made sure there was no lipgloss on her teeth or anywhere other than her lips. Waiting for J to come out making her antsy.
