theres a lot of different opinions on new leaf vs new horizons but i will say you kind of cannot overlook that new horizons lets you be black

A tip for getting (some of) your favorite villagers in New Horizons and I cannot stress this enough DO IT AT THE START OF THE GAME. The odds of getting a villager you want from nook miles tickets at the start are huge compared to later on.

What do I mean? Well, typically the villager you get from a nmt island is decided by choosing a random species, then a random villager from that species. Let’s take Bob, for example (he’s my favorite). Bob is a cat villager. There are 26 cat villagers in NH. And there are 35 species. So, assuming you don’t have any other cats on your island, or every villager from a species, the odds of finding Bob (or any other cat) are 1 in 910 (910 is 26*35).

However, at the very beginning of the game, when you have the prepare three houses for new villagers quest, you can only find villagers of three personality types on the islands. That means a large chunk of villagers are just not possible to get, and the ones that you can get are much more common. Only the villagers with peppy, normal, and lazy personalities are counted. Let’s try it with Bob again.

Species is still rolled first, so we still start off with 1/35 to get a cat. But this time there are only 11 cat villagers to take into account, so the odds are reduced to 1 in 385. Additionally, if you’ve already invited a villager who has one of the other personalities, you won’t get that personality again. This means that you can have entire species removed from the options. Say you have a peppy and a normal villager already, and all you need is a lazy one. Not only does that cross out the five species that don’t have a lazy villager, it also ONLY takes into account lazy villagers. So we have 30 species, and 3 lazy cats. Now the odds are down to 1 in 90.

I am legally required to inform you that doing this means they will have the basic starter houses instead of their regular ones. So if that’s an issue for you (and you don’t have the dlc to change it yourself), then sorry, this won’t work. I personally think the starter houses are super cute, but if you like the villager’s regular house that’s totally valid!!

In New Horizons, if the game can't load an NPC due to their referenced model name being invalid, or for other reasons, the game will instead load a naked, unnamed Bob in their place as a failsafe. This was likely a dummy NPC used for testing reasons.
