Romanian mine
In 2003, after giving the mine director a bottle of vodka, I was allowed to enter the mines at Baia Mara in Romania. Gold, silver and ores have been found in the mines since the Middle Ages.
The safety rules were different than now, boxes of dynamite were thrown over and no one wore safety glasses, earplugs or a dust mask.
The miners were taken to the entrance of the mine by bus and played a game of cards to pass the time.
You entered on foot and then descended into the earth with a rickety lift. The temperature in the mine was extreme, the humidity very high. My lenses were fogging up but after getting used to it I was able to take pictures. Changing a film in the camera was a chore and I was happy that my Leicas could handle the conditions without any problems despite the mud and wet air. A bizarre world underground where hard work was done. Continuous noise from the jackhammers and trains that shot right past you.
Here a small selection
The roughness of the work and the bizarre circumstances made this one of the most memorable reports for me to make. So if anyone has a mine ... I'd love to take pictures there.
Salvage of the Ms Michelle
On August 26, 2005, 100 km northeast of Den Helder, Ms Michelle sank after colliding with another freighter. Because the Michelle is on the edge of the fairway, it must be secured by salvage company Smit. I was asked to make a documentary of a part of the salvage.

500x the same tree? Why? The tree, although beautiful and proud in its loneliness, surrounded by other trees, does not substantially change. The tree already looked the same on photos from the Holland Pop Festival in 1970 and will probably stay that way. Occasionally there is a dog, tent, there are fences in front cause of the CHIO, with the seasons leaves come and go and sometimes there is a crow on a branch, but the tree is the tree. And yet no photo is the same. Light, the essence of photography, ensures that the tree shines, shimmers, mourns or blends into the background. The light creates the tension, fascination and intrigues. On to the 1000.
