Every once in a while I think “why do I have all these mental disorders, surely my childhood wasn’t that bad” and then I have an interaction with my mother and I understand.

Ulf Borgström: The Most Infamous Pyromaniac In Sweden
The crimes
Ulf Borgström, born in southern Sweden in 1963, has become one of the most infamous criminals in Sweden. He terrorized several cities for over a decade by burning buildings down to the ground. He targeted buildings that were important parts of Swedish history and culture; for example, he burned down Nils Holgerssongården, which inspired famous author Selma Lagerlöf to write the novel The Wonderful Adventures of Nils.
Ulf lived as an outsider; he had no phone, was unemployed, and was homeless. He was well-known in the small town Ystad and was often seen eating lunch at a fast-food restaurant or hanging out in local parks. Even though Ulf seemed to be harmless to most people, he was far from it; he sometimes woke up early in the morning and lit houses, churches, and other buildings on fire. Since Ulf always operated in the early mornings, he earned the nickname Gryningspyromanen (literal translation; “The Dawn-Pyromaniac”).
Perhaps the most shocking detail about Ulf Borgström is the fact that the police were certain Ulf was the one who lit historical buildings on fire, but he managed to walk free for over a decade; in fact, Ulf was charged and stood trial several times for arson. However, there was never enough evidence to convict Ulf, which was something Ulf took great pride in. Ulf often taunted the police by participating in interviews where he talked about his crimes without confessing to them. The police often followed Ulf to try and catch him in the act, but Ulf always seemed to be one step ahead, and he was never caught - until early December 2010, when Ulf was caught sneaking out of a burning apartment.
Trial and aftermath
Ulf stood trial in 2011 and was found guilty of arson. He was sentenced to eight years in prison. He was released after a couple of years but was sent back to prison in 2017 after he was caught trying to light a building on fire once again. Ulf was released in April 2021 but was sent back to prison after just a few hours since he refused to wear an electronic ankle tag. He spent a month in prison and was then released again. However, he was arrested once again in July 2021 on a narcotics charge.
Ulf participated in an interview while incarcerated for the 2011 arson. He stated in the interview that there would be more fires to come, and he stated the following when asked if he was going to light more buildings on fire when released: “I let the system determine that because this is about jurisprudence. When I get accused of arson, it’s not about reality. It’s about jurisprudence. It’s a game that people upstairs have made us play, and I can be a part of the game and write my own rules”.
Ulf has also been found guilty of other crimes in his lifetime, such as possession of child pornography, theft, and fraud. His whereabouts are currently unknown.
