In 1968, during the administration of US President Lyndon B. Johnson, Eartha Kitt encountered a substantial professional setback after she made anti-war statements during a White House luncheon. Kitt was invited to the White House luncheon and was asked by Lady Bird Johnson about the Vietnam War. She replied: “You send the best of this country off to be shot and maimed. No wonder the kids rebel and take pot.”

During a question and answer session, Kitt stated:

The children of America are not rebelling for no reason. They are not hippies for no reason at all. We don’t have what we have on Sunset Blvd. for no reason. They are rebelling against something. There are so many things burning the people of this country, particularly mothers. They feel they are going to raise sons — and I know what it’s like, and you have children of your own, Mrs. Johnson — we raise children and send them to war.

Her remarks reportedly caused Mrs. Johnson to burst into tears and led to a derailment in Kitt’s career

On the eve of my 30th birthday, I'm at a youth exhibition with art and performance pieces themed around Stop and Frisk and forms of racial brutality. Seeing this got me hella emotional because most of the people in these pictures, if all, lost their lives senselessly before they experience where I will be in a few hours. So many of them looked like me that it's a painful reminder that I could have easily found myself amongst these photos. I'm so incredibly grateful for the life I have, what's in store for me and most importantly the fight I continue on their behalf and others through education. For those interested in seeing the exhibition, it is at the Soho Gallery for Digital Art on 138 Sullivan Street in NYC from now until December 5th. I'm still processing it all but late last night I was approached by a group of people with their flashlights all in my face who were looking for Avonte Oquendo. I was partly inspired by their goodwill and courage. On the other hand, I was completely frightened as the situation felt like a modern day enslaved African hunt with the group playing the terrifying role of a lynch mob. There in lies the trouble with being Black in America: you are constantly in a state of paranoia of others' intentions. And the world wonders why we're crazy...
