My Reflection
Dear Mark Lipton,
I want to thank you for making this class unlike any other I have had this semester. I've learned a lot and I promise to take the time to reflect and expand on the material you taught me. On the first day of class, I didn't know what to expect. The course name can be deceiving and I really had no idea what to expect. I found the first day in your class to be different than all my other classes because it was actually fun. We were paired up with an individual whom most of us may not have met before, and were asked to get to know them within a certain time frame. Then, there was a game of broken telephone happening in the class. I had anticipated that the original phrase would be said correctly at the end of the game, unfortunately it was not. After the first day of class, I knew that your class would be quite the experience.
When the narrative essay was first assigned, I panicked. I had no idea what to write about or how I would even begin talking about my struggle. It wasn't an easy task for me, it was full of struggle. I couldn't understand who would want to write about something that troubled them? In the end, I'm glad I did get the courage to express my emotions and feelings I had kept bottled up inside. The mark I received on the paper wasn't the greatest, but I didn't expect it to be high either only because I am aware of my weaknesses. After receiving the paper back, I looked through my errors and even met up with you to talk about what went wrong. You encouraged me to practice my writing skills and to always be reading something.
One of your teaching methods was always putting us on the spot and asking us questions. I never really experienced this in my other classes and found it a good way to stretch from sitting for too long. When we were standing, we were able to pay more attention as to what was going on in class, and participate. It's obvious that you can't get everyone's attention when they're sitting in front of their laptops. Your method helped me overcome some of my fears of speaking in public, and it really helped me think and pay attention to the material that your taught.
You introduced me to social networking sites that I had never heard of before. Pinetrest, Delicious and Stumbleupon are just a few to name. Thanks to you I have become a frequent user of Stumbleupon. I love how it searches for web pages that are about your interests. I did create accounts for the other two websites but I found them to be difficult to understand. Hopefully I'll figure it out some day.
I just wanted to thank you once again for being a person who encourages others to be involved with the world and be a part of change. I will take your advice about how to become a better writer, it all reflects on what you are reading. Hope to see you in the future, and thanks for making this class a memorable one.
From,
Victoria Ciolek
Wiki Posts
Throughout the course of the semester we were required to participate with our classmates and professor through an online discussion. We did by using Wikispace where it allowed everyone to participate and start discussions about anything they felt should be mentioned. I tried to participate as often as I could and put an effort into my responses. I enjoyed this form of class participation because some of the posts were about stories which I never heard about. I liked how the class was able to come forth in the discussions to draw similarities and differences between their opinions.
One of my best wiki posts would have to be the discussion I started about a man turning down a job during his interview, because the employer asked for his Facebook login information. This took place in the U.S. and I appreciate someone commenting on the post saying employers are not allowed to do this in Canada. As future media students, some of us may not want to work in Canada after we graduate. The U.S. offers a lot of jobs in the media related field, so there is a possibility we may hear about something like this again. Hopefully, the U.S.will learn from Canada and respect people's privacy.
The wiki was a great idea for us media students to be more aware of what is happening in the world. We were able to feed off of each others ideas and respond with our point of view about the various subjects.
Ever heard of the Facebook song? It's a video poking fun at Facebook. Give it a listen!
What's up with Facebook?
Facebook has become the most used social networking site in the world. "It is the number one social networking site as of May 2011 with 157.2 million visitors per month, ahead of MySpace (34.9 million visitors per month), Linkedin (33.4 million visitors per month), and Twitter (27.0 million visitors per month)" (Li-Barbar, Special). People spend hours a day on this website, but is it really worth it? I'm always on Facebook, it is the first website I sign into when I sit down in front of my laptop. In all honesty, I don't even know why I sign on Facebook. Even if I need to quickly research something, I need to to log in. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who does this. "It is the most visited social media site in the world, and has more than 800 million active users (Facebook, 2011)—many of whom are college students" (Li-Barbar, Special). We have to ask ourselves, what is the whole point of it? To be honest it does connect people and comes in handy when you want to talk to someone and you don't have their phone number. Other people use it as a website to promote themselves, an event, or a even a company. "Facebook’s uses include (from most to least important) friend functions (accepting/adding friends, browsing friend’s profiles, seeing how friends are connected); personal information (reading personal information, looking through photos" (Li- Barbar, Special). Photographs are a big thing on Facebook, but this mostly applies to girls. A majority of them upload tonnes of pictures they take of themselves. Why do we do it? Some people do it for the attention and want their photo to attract comments from their friends. It makes us feel good about ourselves and can boost our confidence.
Facebook is great and all but there have been times when I've considered to get rid of it. It takes up too much of my time and I'm afraid I've become an addict. The only reason I don't want to get rid of Facebook is so I can keep up with local events happening around the school and in the city. I also still want to keep in touch with some people who don't go to the same school as me. As much as I want to give up Facebook, I don't think I ever will.

This is just one of my favorite computer games of all time! The Sims lets anyone be in control of the people they've created. You are in charge of their lives and are responsible for satisfying their needs. If you don't take care of your person they could end up dying so be aware!
Upper Class or Middle Class? Language Habits
Our professor assigned an exercise that had to do with 'language habits'. We were required to read Gee's article and figure out if we were working class or upper-middle class. After reading Gee's article, I was surprised to discover that "the upper middle class teens already fashion themselves in terms of (anxiety-filled) movement through "achievement space" wherein they accrue skills, attributes, attitudes, and achievements as capital that will make them worthy of success" (Gee). On the contrary "the working class in our interviews, seem to speak out of a lifeworld oriented toward dialogic interaction and much less penetrated by school-based and public sphere Discourses" (Gee).
In regards to Gee's study I think I wouldn't classify myself as any of the classes. I would probably fall right in between both of them. The way I talk to my friends isn't the same when I talk to my parents. I don't swear to my parents because I have been raised in a household that does not encourage this type of behaviour. When I talk to my siblings, sure I slip a few words here and there but never have we sworn directly at one another. In the article the working kids were found frequently to use words representing desires; "I need" or "I want". I am guilty of using these phrases constantly which is never a good thing. Everybody want's stuff they can't afford to have but I always mention what I want even though I know I'm not going to get it. This is where I find similarities about myself and the working class.
The upper-middle class was found to be not as popular with ability and constraint statements. These statements have to do with "being able or having to do things" (Gee). I think the explanation for this is because since these kids come from wealthy families, some of the chores/responsibilities that they have to do around the house are done by nannies or maids. I never had a nanny or any type of cleaning professional come to my house. I do my best when I can to help my mom cook and clean. Since she works at home, she does most of these tasks when I'm at school so I don't have to worry about much. I don't really complain about what I have to do, if I have something important to do I just do it.
The experiment in this article had me hooked, while reading I found the chart at the end helped me understand and see the scores of how each teenager ranked. It was really cool to see how different classes did not have the same language habits as one another.

SOPA & PIPA Video Link
http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/2fPcA5/fightforthefuture.org/pipa/
Here is a link to a video that explains the details of SOPA and PIPA.
SOPA & PIPA
SOPA and PIPA have been both brought up in my communications class. Both are acronyms, SOPA; 'Stop Online Privacy Act' and PIPA; 'Protect IP Act'. SOPAS function "is primarily aimed at combating copyright infringement by foreign websites" (Rapp). This is a bill that will allow the American Government to ultimately do whatever they can to stop online piracy. One way on how they plan to do this is by stopping famous search engines like Google and Yahoo from providing links to websites where one would be able to get access to pirated material. Websites like Wikipedia protested against this bill by restricting access to their information for one day. At the time when this happened, I was in need for information on a certain topic and like anybody else I turned to Wikipedia. I was forced to read and realize how serious this matter would become if this bill had successfully passed. New laws regarding copyright material would be fully enforced. Our right to freedom or speech would be affected, everything would be tracked down and content which would not adhere to the government's guidelines would be removed. Fortunately, SOPA has been put aside as of January 20, 2012.
Similar to SOPA, the purpose of PIPA would give the American Government the right to block out any international websites that are associated with distributing illegal items. According to Forbes the government would want “a service provider (to) take technically feasible and reasonable measures designed to prevent access by its subscribers located within the United States to the foreign infringing site" (Magid). I am thankful neither of these laws had made it far enough to be passed. If we think about, almost everyone is a pirate. I am sure the majority of users online have at least downloaded one song or movie illegally. If there was a law passed regarding what we were allowed to have access to online, the internet would be useless. Content like pictures and even cooking recipes wouldn't be able to be looked at or used. The question that remains is who would benefit from these laws? Entertainment industries, the music industry, and television networks are just a few to name. Even though the discussions of these laws have died down, it is not over. They will be brought up again. We can only wait and see what the future will hold.

You're never to young to start using technology!
GameGraphy Excercise
At the start of the semester, we were given a rather fun activity that involved us to recall our favorite childhood games. We were supposed to list them and then create a line from what games we played from birth until now. When I first started this exercise, it was difficult for me to remember all of the games I played when I was younger. Once I did think of some games, the list I created was never ending. I managed to come up with thirty one games including ones from my toddler years and ones that I still continue to play to this date. I did not have a scanner so I couldn't upload my time line but I will try and do my best to describe it.
From a young age, the most popular games during that time were peekaboo, hide and seek, tag, frozen tag and hand clap games. During grade four, games such as heads up 7up, marco polo, crazy eights, barbies, guess who, monopoly and broken telephone were popular. Computer games like the Sims and Neopets were two of my most played games. Entering my teenage years I started to become a big fan of the Game Cube, the Ninetendo DS and Playstation 3. Since I have two older brothers, I was always surrounded by video games which is why I've had plenty of knowledge and experience with them. The games I play now still remain to be video games but board games as well, it's a great idea to get together with your friends and play cranium. This game tests your knowledge and contains questions on about almost anything.
The purpose of this exercise has made me reflect upon how games have provided me with an experience that has aided me from childhood, by developing and maintaining cognitive skills and functioning. People may not realize but the games we played and still play all have an impact on the way we think and learn. Card games are a good example of this, any type of card game involves us to think of strategies and tactics when playing. If we think about it, you cannot play card games without knowing the rules. Along with the rules comes strategies we need to employ to win. When playing crazy eights, the goal of the players is to get rid of their cards as quickly as possible. We have to decide what cards are the easiest to get rid of and which cards the other player has, which we can play on to link (suits for ourselves) and block (suits against other players) the people playing with us. Experiences that I have drawn from games have helped me work better with others when working in teams, or when tasked with something individually.
During a game of hangman for example, we were required to communicate with one another and brainstorm ideas to make sure the other team wouldn't guess the word we thought of. According to Konstantin Mitgutsch he mentions how games shape the way we learn. "Pattern learned in a game does not lead to an immediate transformation process, but it can allow transformation if a connection to real life settings is fostered at the right times" (66). I find this to be accurate, the experience does not happen right away. We begin playing games at a young age, later we build upon and improve these skills that will bear fruit for us to benefit from in the future.
In conclusion, the gamegraphy exercise has been interesting and fun to participate in. It let me reflect on how games have meaning and teach us how to think or even how to react in certain situations.

This is the Kony 2012 video. If you haven't had a chance I suggest you take a look and watch it to see how mistreatment of innocent children in Africa must to stopped. No one has the right to exploit another person, Kony has to be seized.
Here is the Dove elvoution video! It's extremely absurd how much a person can change with the photo editing programs that are available. What happened to natural beauty? Why can't we see the original picture? I don't even think it's bad but then again, these people can't be seen with imperfections because it goes against the standards in the industry.
Digital Project Reflection #2 Media's impact on Body Image
For our second digital project, our group involved the same members from the first project; Kristina, Nicole, Bianca, Samantha, Donna and myself. This time we decided to focus on what role the media plays with regards to body issues. Super models and actresses in the media are women who influence other women, by making them feel pressured into looking like them. We see these girls with tiny waists and large breasts, the media glamorizes this as the perfect look. We have to remember that what we see isn't always true, photoshop plays a huge role by retouching and reshaping the way that they want these superstars to look like. But in reality, girls forget or choose to ignore the fact that somethings are not real. Take a look at the Dove campaign video, it shows the transformation from a model's before and after photo. I couldn't even tell if it was the same person, sadly it is stuff like this that turns not only girls but males into starving themselves or even getting plastic surgery.
Similar to our other project, we made a movie but this time no students were in the film. Instead we decided to create it with images that represented body issues and inserted facts about this problem. We used iMovie to put the movie together and handed out surveys for students to fill out. The surveys included questions like "Do you know anyone who has suffered from an eating disorder?" and "What body type do you prefer?" we listed some celebrities that were extremely thin and some that had healthy, normal bodies. Surprisingly many results were fairly similar, we discovered that a majority of individuals had known someone with an eating disorder or had suffered from one themselves.
We split up the work for this project like we did in project number one. This time Kristina was in charge of finding images from online sources that would be put in our video, Donna and Sam put the video together, myself and Nicole made the surveys that we handed out to students in our class, and Bianca was responsible for typing out the text and placing them on the pictures.
The learning experience of this project helped me see that this issue will always reappear in the media. As long as it does, it will target someone into looking a certain way. The media has successfully accomplished showing us what is considered to be "pretty" or "hot". The best way to combat this is by accepting the fact that everyone is made different. Imagine if everyone looked the same, how boring would it be? We have to be realistic and understand that celebrities and super models spend ridiculous amounts of money to maintain their look, and a little digital touch up from photoshop too.
Digital Project Reflection #1 Bill C-30
For our first digital project myself, Donna, Kristina, Samantha, Bianca and Nicole all got together and thought of the idea to create a video that would reflect on Bill C-30. We all knew each other from last semester due to our similar schedules. This meant that we had no problems working with each other. We heard about this bill in class when it was first brought up by our professor. This bill allows internet service provides to grant access to police who can go through our online personal information, including emails, and things we do on social networking websites without a warrant. It seemed to be an interesting topic to look into and it was well worth it in the end. I learned about some of the thoughts that Guelph-Humber students had towards the bill and felt the same way they did.
When we filmed the video, we used a Canon point and shoot camera. Each group member had a different task during this time. Kristina was responsible for filming the interviews, Bianca went around the school asking students if they wanted to be featured in our film, Donna held the interviews, myself and Nicole printed off the petition sheets opposing the bill and handed them out to the students who wanted to sign it, and lastly Samantha and Donna edited the video to perfection.
We did run into some trouble during our project. Finding people who wanted to be in our film was not easy. Many students turned down Bianca's offer and so we found ourselves spending more time than we thought we would when searching for the ideal candidates. When putting the film together the video program we first began using was Final Cut Pro, but we found it difficult to work on a program which we had no experience with. We quickly realized that iMovie was installed on Donna's Macbook so we worked with that instead. It turned out to be easier and we successfully managed to put our film together.
During the interviews, the questions that were brought up included asking the students if they have ever heard of the bill before, their thoughts on the bill, and if they were willing to sign a petition against the bill. No one rejected signing the petition which was no surprise because the vast majority of not only students, but a lot of other people as well spend quite a bit of time on the internet. I'm sure everyone would agree and want their privacy to be respected.
As a result of this project I learned that as media students we are responsible and should always be up to date with the new bills or laws that are being brought up in the news. My group successfully brought attention to some students who had no idea about the bill, this lead them to further research more information and be a part of change. Myself and the other girls enjoyed working with one another, overall we had a great experience.
