rsemarie:
“ … and then the woman had the nerve to look as if i was the one that was wrong ! last i checked, madame, i got these pre-ordered last season, thank you very much. i had asked the salesclerk, too, if they were in yet when i arrived, and she said, quote en quote, “ they’re right on the shelf at the back. ” which, i look for. lo and behold, they weren’t there but… on her feet ! i then politely told her they were mine and d’you know what she said to me ? she said “ i don’t see your name on them. ” like, come on now, we’re not five year olds, are we ? i let her have it though and i walked out of there in these bad boys, ” she tapped her 50 galleon satin shoes in a vibrant pink color. “ so i’m not that mad anymore. anyways, that’s how my day went. how’s yours ? ”
GRACE BLINKED a few times at the story that was being retold to her. the old her would have been aghast at how the other female was treated and she would have vented alongside her too. but really, now that she’s no longer an heiress to a fortune, she’s found herself to be rather... disinterested in such shallow matters. “they were... shoes,” grace said slowly. “you’d get in an argument about shoes?” personally, she thought that alcohol was something worth fighting for while shoes were... well, not. “busy. certainly had quite a day with fighting customers and doing tattoo arts. the usual type of day, really.”
jinxics:
jinx tries to muffle her yawn with the back of her hand, before she gives an apologetic smile with a look to match. not wanting to seem like she was bored, it wasn’t that all it was taking her time to adjust to her training schedule– and to go from being used to having the summer to do whatever she wanted to, to jumping right into training. despite that? honestly she’s been loving it every minute of it. “i’m sorry it’s not you honestly, it’s taking me time to adjust to my newfound schedule.” came her honest response, as the redhead moves to take a sip of her drink, hoping it might help. “don’t mind me, i’m not bored or uninterested really.”
WITH A book in hand, brought up to her face, she read silently, absorbing the words as well as visualizing the story that she was reading. it was only when she heard her companion yawn that her focus was broken and she looked up over her book to look at jinx. “no judgments here, love,” she reminded jinx and set down the book on her lap. “newfound schedule? what exactly have you been up to?”
ignicorsnadia:
nadia wouldn’t have been surprised if it was a question that had been asked a lot, but it was a good one– considering she didn’t know anything about them, expect of course they were incredibly neat. “that’s incredible really, but i’m not too surprised with magic and all.” it was true, magic was wonderful like that. “i’ve got to admit that they are, i’ve always been fascinated with them. i’m sorry to hear that, but in a sense i think eventually.. mine would forgive me, i’d probably constantly hear about it, so it’d have to be something i really liked.”
“INDEED IT is,” she smiled. “the beauty of magic is making something beautiful painless. but at the same time, there’s the notion of the whole ‘no pain no gain’ and how beauty is pain.” grace shook her head. “sorry, i got a little too ramble-y. but er, yes, well, some parents are great, others are not,” she sighed. “well, they could get over it eventually. hopefully they would. you got any ideas on what sort of tattoo you wanted to get?”
ignicorsnadia:
「 @vcndre liked for a starter. 」
“i’ve always wondered about the wizarding kind of tattoo, how bad do they hurt?” nadia inquired, interested– though it were possible her parents might just have her head on a platter if she did something like that. no more than they would when they found out she had no interest in pursuing a career in the ministry. “my parents would kill me, but i think they’re so neat.”
THE QUESTION wasn’t uncommon— as a matter of fact, she’d been asked that question often enough. “they don’t hurt at all,” she promised with a smile. “ask anyone really; they’re painless compared to muggle tattoos.” the brunette smirked at the other’s words and she was reminded of her parents. “that they are. i mean, my parents would have murdered me if they saw all my tattoos but i got them after they disowned me so i didn’t have anything to lose.”
britinsj:
some people, once intoxicated, became better versions of themselves ; found it easier to speak freely, or felt less anxious in a crowd. britin st. james was not one of those people. when he drank, he became a mess .. often HOSTILE, sometimes belligerent and hardly ever capable of stringing intelligent thoughts together. of course he’d known that grace no longer went by van doren ( and there was quite a story there too – how embarrassing to have forgotten something that juicy ) but the addled bits of his brain that were focused on slamming shots back until his eyes watered had muddled all relevant bits of information. truthfully ? it probably wasn’t the first or last time he’d call her by the wrong name even if there were no malicious intentions behind it. “right, course.” he nodded, words slurred slightly in a garbled cross between his faux america accent and native. “vandre.” he drew it out like it was eighteen syllables, the girl who’d appeared at his elbow to bring the drinks back giggling like she’d been blast with the tickling curse ! “cross my heart, hope to die. never again.”
britin sent the drinks back with the giggling blonde but stayed where he was at, amber eyes searching out hers. he would never be able to begin to understand the van doren family dynamic … he’d abandoned that hope ages ago. he understood dysfunctional families, hard not to with the one he came from, but giving up everything you had ? starting fresh ? he couldn’t imagine it. he’d miss his money too much. or at least, the pleasures that his money brought him. “what are ya drinking? she’ll have another.” he hit the top of the bar with his hand, trying to get the attention of the bartender. “…and i’ll have two. hell, make it three. we’re celebrating.”
SHE WASN’T quite as drunk as she would have wanted to just yet. though it was a perk that she could handle her liquor, sometimes, it did prove to be such a curse that she had to drink so much in order to even get the slightest bit tipsy. perhaps she shouldn’t have drank so much when she was younger. grace was wishing she’d been more drunk at this moment— perhaps making this interaction with the ever-confusing and somewhat infuriating britin st. james to be more tolerant. her family was a sore topic for her and she didn’t bring them up that often. but she supposed she could let it slide this once, especially when the wizard was... well, he was tipsier than she was. the brunette sat up straight, still looking unamused when he repeated her new last name. “i should make you swear an unbreakable vow,” she mused, blue eyes twinkling with mischief, her earlier ire towards him pushed aside for the moment. “then i’d believe you.”
when their eyes met, she felt her cheeks heat up and she scowled for a moment at the other, hoping he didn’t notice. of course, she could always just say that she felt really hot— which wasn’t a lie. it was rather hot in the pub, especially since she’d been drinking. she cleared her throat as she averted her gaze from him and looked over at the bartender when britin called their attention. “firewhiskey. my favourite,” she replied, before turning her attention back to him. “celebrating what, exactly?”
httpdaphnc:
she was honestly in love with her new tattoo. out of the other two that she’d gotten years prior, this was the most important to her. there was so much symbolism behind it. “ umm, honestly, i haven’t thought of the next ones yet, ” she admitted with a sheepish shrug. “ all i know is that i do want more. i’m sure i’ll figure it out, when the time comes. ”

frcmashes:
GRACE!
SHE ABSOLUTELYloved the end of the year carnival. she had a bittersweet ending to her last year at hogwarts, but the carnival had lifted her spirits. so, whenever she could, she attended the carnival where she could catch up with her friends and enjoy good food. the brunette was looking at some of the vendor stalls at the carnival and she tensed when she felt someone cover her eyes, jumping in surprise when she heard a voice surprise her. grace’s vision was suddenly uncovered and she turned her head, grinning at nix. “using my move against me. well played,” she nodded in acknowledgement. “it’s all good. i was a mess during my newts too.” at nix’s question, she shook her head. “nah. i’ve been busy trying the food,” she laughed, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
FIN.
nix.
“studying, studying, studying.” phoenix made a face ; her books were tucked closer to her chest, as if she hoped that she could absorb the information through osmosis. “feels like i’ll never be ready.” the two girls had talked for awhile longer before phoenix had explained that she had to get back to her studying — that the transfiguration alphabet wasn’t going to learn itself ! when n.e.w.t.s. were over and done with and her time at hogwarts was almost finished, phoenix located grace at the end of year carnival with a smile on her face. though nervous as always, the witch was bubbling as as came up from behind grace this time. “boo ! “ she smiled as her hands covered the older girl’s eyes, heart hammering inside of her chest cavity as she pulled them back and away. “sorry about last time. i know i was all over the place.” she shrugged apologetically. grace had gone through her n.e.w.t.s. so phoenix was sure she understood. “have you tried any of the games yet?”

daphne.
daphne grinned brightly. she was in LOVE with her new tattoo. she’d been a bit worried about finding the right tattoo artist to get the concept down. it was the first illustrated tattoo she’d gotten. it wasn’t the same as the two japanese terms she got prior. “ i’ll definitely let you know ! i definitely know that i want a couple more. ”
HER SMILE widened. it was clear that the other really liked their tattoo and grace felt really proud of herself for getting it done. if she was being honest, it was one of her best work. “really? do you have an idea on what the next ones you wanted are going to be like?”
daphne.
daphne grinned brightly as she watched the fish move in a rather hypnotic fashion. “ well i think the execution is just as IMPORTANT as the concept. after all, i feel like finding the right tattoo artist is crucial to getting the tattoo. ”
GRACE FOUND herself blushing at the compliment. “oh you flatter me too much!” she laughed and ran a hand through her hair. “if you ever do need another tattoo to be done, please let me know. it’s been a pleasure working with you, daphne.”
alecto.
alecto learned to stop feeling bad for not spending time with her friends as much. after all, at the ripe age of twenty, she was officially handed the family business. as much as she did prove herself to be a formidable business woman, it was nice to take a break. smiling back, she took a seat across from grace. “ hey grace. ” she delicately smoothed out the minuscule wrinkles that were present on her top. “ i definitely have to agree with you there. it’s been quite a WHILE. but i’ve been well. still running a business. and you ? how’s life ? ”
THIS WAS an effect of adulthood: not seeing your friends as often as you’d like. in the two years since she graduated and in the year since she dropped off the face of the planet, grace had learned that you weren’t going to see your friends as much as you’d like since you’d all be busy doing your own thing. but, as long as she got to see them at least once a year, it should be good enough. “that’s good. i’ve heard you’ve been doing great with your job,” she grinned, leaning back against her seat. “ah, same old, same old. tattooing people and serving people drinks. that’s the life of grace vandre.”
nix.
though she’d deny it later, nix nearly jumped out of her skin when grace came up from behind her and grabbed her shoulders. she’d been so focused on flipping through her history of magic notes that even her enhanced senses hadn’t picked up on anything. “wha – oh, grace.” her cheeks flushed a brilliant shade of red, nearly tripping over her own tongue as she tried to speak. “i — hello! how are you?” she’d kick herself later for asking something so innocuous but grace van doren always left her in a state of distress. yet then again, so did most girls. phoenix was just a mess when it came to stringing sentences together in their presence.
UNABLE TO help herself, grace chuckled when she saw the blonde reacting to her surprise. it was adorable, seeing nix all red and surprised. oh how grace loved it! the trickster in her absolutely loved seeing the surprised look on people’s faces whenever she jumped on their backs and yelled in their ear. just because she was older now didn’t mean she was any more mature. “heya nix,” she giggled and pulled away for a moment. “i’m doing alright. just tired from work. what about you? studying for your exams, i see?”
britin.
it wasn’t uncommon to find britin st. james ( and whatever entourage he’d put together for the night ) stumbling into the place completely sloshed minutes before closing. he’d once paid a hotspot in golden pine to stay open an extra hour beyond closing just so he could finish his pint in peace. unfortunately they’d been banned from said place just three nights earlier when an .. altercation with one of the bar staff turned violent. though britin’s wand had never been raised, one of his friends had sent a particularly nasty curse towards the bartender when he’d refused to serve him more alcohol. while it had been quite funny at the time, finding a new place to party had been essential. of course britin had slept most of the day so without many other ideas floating around, he’d simply suggested they head to the leaky cauldron for the night. so britin, his friend james, and their dates apparated just outside of the establishment and entered the pub — his attention settled on his date, not grace van doren !
it was only later when he stumbled over to the bar to order another round of shots, elbow knocking into someone seated at the bar, that he blinked and determined that the blurred outline of a person beside him was actually someone he knew. “grace ?” he’d recognize her anywhere. after all, her brother — isaac van doren — was one of his best mates. speaking of … “oi, where’s your bloody brother?“ almost as soon as he’d asked, he’d forgotten. he was distracted by the plate of shots placed before him. “ah, excellent.” his wand flicked out to levitate the shots, carefully sending them whooshing towards their table in the back. “say, why don’t you join us ? the more the merrier.” he slung an arm around her shoulder sloppily, gesturing grandly to the table he’d just left. “what’ll it be, van doren? are you going to keep drinking alone,” at that, he reached for her cheeks … twisting her visage into a makeshift frown, “…or keep the party going with us ?” his tone made it rather clear that there wasn’t really a choice. she’d have been crazy to say no. from his experience, people hardly ever said no to him.
BACK WHEN she had been known as grace van doren, she would have found it to be rather preposterous if she was ever jealous of someone. why would she be jealous, when she had money, the looks and the brains? she was the damn package and she knew it. now though, she was grace vandre: a tattoo artist and a bartender. she had the looks and the brains still, but not the money. the lack of money in her life had taught the brunette to be more... humble and to appreciate hard work more. despite that, she held a rather complicated relationship with anyone who had money and fame, such as britin st. james. though grace was rather civil with the male ( what with him being her brother’s friend and all ), part of her resented his fame and his success. he had it so easy; something grace wished she still had. her electric blue eyes narrowed at the sight of the girl in his arm and she tried to ignore the jealousy that was clawing from inside of her chest. great, so not only did he have the money, the looks and the fame, but he also got the girls. of course he did.
whilst she was bitterly comparing herself to the other, she didn’t even notice that he was making his way over to the bar. it was only when she heard him utter her name that she looked up and stared at him. “britin,” she greeted coolly, trying not to think about how awful she looked at the moment. he looked good, as he always did and grace... well, she’s certainly looked better. but to be fair, she did just come from a long and tiring shift. the brunette rolled her eyes at his question before she ordered another drink and downed it easily. “working, obviously. when’s zac not working?” she questioned, setting down the glass and looking up at britin to meet his eyes for a moment before she looked away, her finger circling the rim of the glass. when his arm slung around her shoulders, grace cringed for a moment. she was never one for touching, unless she was doing someone’s tattoo. but she forced herself to relax, only to stiffen when he called her by that name. her face was showed that she was not amused and her eyes were as cold as ice. “you’ve known me long enough to know that that’s not my name, st. james,” she said coolly, straightening in her seat. though he probably meant nothing by it, to grace, being called van doren was the worst insult ever. “i will consider partying with you lot, but only if you swear to never call me van doren ever again.”

SHE’D JUST finished her shift at the muggle bar and she was beyond exhausted. now that summer was nearing, more and more people go to bars and get rowdy. now, grace wasn’t opposed to serving alcohol, chatting with some regulars or even having to use physical force in order to put a stop to bar fights before the started, but working a ten hour shift on a friday night was just... brutal. the brunette had just left the bar and went to diagon alley to go to the leaky cauldron and maybe have a drink or two ( or more ) herself. merlin knows she deserved it.
grace was on her fourth drink, when she heard the door of the pub open and she lifted her head and looked over her shoulder to see who left or who came in. when she saw who it was, her eyes widened and she immediately flagged down the bartender for another stronger drink, downing it down within seconds. was he going to come over? or was she going to approach him? grace was unsure of what her next move would be and she sat there, debating with herself for a while ( and the alcohol did not help with her decision making ).

GRACE HAD visited hogwarts numerous times in the last little while, but she hadn’t really seen nix whenever she stopped by. the hufflepuff was probably studying for newts, which grace understood; those were rough as hell. the brunette had just finished chatting with kat and catching up, when she caught sight of a familiar blonde figure from the corner of her eye. grace immediately made a beeline for nix, creeping up behind her and suddenly grabbed her shoulders. “heya!” she grinned, intending to surprise the other.

IT HAD been a while, a long while really, since grace last saw alecto. but she understood that her close friend had been busy with running a company and grace herself had been swamped with appointments at the tattoo parlour, since she started getting more and more clients. so when grace saw her friend for the first time in what seemed like forever, she smiled. “hey ‘lecto,” she nodded in greeting. “long time no see. how have you been?”
