″ that is wildly evasive and non-specific, but i’m far from questioning your motives. ″ laura pointed out, shrugging before gulping down the rest of her champagne, only to have it be filled immediately right before her eyes. merlin, did she love magic. the presence of the small creature caught her by surprise. house elves were one of a handful of things she had never gotten used to in the wizarding world. during her time at hogwarts, she had never venture down to the kitchens, so it was only after her graduation that she became acknowledge with one in the flesh. having someone dedicated to fulfilling your every whim and desire sounded like the hairdresser’s idea of heaven, yet the idea made her slightly uncomfortable –– perhaps because she was far from acquiring a servant in her crummy flat and moderate wage, or because working in customer service made her a tad more empathetic to the little creatures. regardless, it wasn’t something she gave extensive thought to, and she was nowhere near making any deal, big or small, about it. she shimmied out of her lilac faux fur coat, exposing a crop top and high waisted set of the same tone, and let the house elf take it away. ″ well, i’m not about to turn it down. ″ she had been marvelling at the property since her arrival, and wouldn’t refuse a chance to see more of it. plus, britin st. james was hot, and she would never pass a chance to spend time with a hot guy.

“ do you need a specific reason ? some people just like to party -- i, myself, don’t usually need to justify it with a reason. some do, however, so .. post-halloween, pre-christmas. that’s what i’m going with. “ he smirked, sipping from his own champagne flute. he didn’t notice lulu jump when corvius appeared with a crack. he was used to the elf popping up at a moment’s notice. when his parents had lived in the manor home, they’d had three elves; corvius, calista, and corvey. he wasn’t sure what had happened to corvey. his father had sacked him shortly after his sixth birthday. when britin had asked where the elf was, jesse had simply said that he was gone. no explanations, no details -- par for the course where his father was concerned. calista passed away shortly after his mother did. they’d been thick as thieves, the two of them. britin hadn’t been surprised. another sip drew him from his memories, watching as corvius took lulu’s coat and tottered off in the direction of the cloak room. if his eyes were drawn to the expanse of skin between the cut of her high waisted pants and the matching lilac crop top, he hid the appreciative glance behind another sip from the bubbling champagne. on his third flute so far that evening, he was in good spirits. “ cheers. “ he raised his glass, clinking it against hers. “ follow me. “
britin led lulu through the foyer of st. james manor, through the high ceiling’d entryway, with its rich carpets and double staircases that led to the second floor. on the walls upstairs were portraits of some of the st. james’ of years past. he avoided them for now, knowing they’d likely start shouting obscenities when they passed by. the portraits were known for getting drunk ( his great grandfather august’s portrait had a saloon in its frame ) and shouting at ‘interlopers’ who passed through the manor. above their heads a crystal chandelier sparkled, a gift from his great-great grandfather to his wife for their fifth anniversary. he narrated some of the stories to lulu as they passed through into the sitting room, and then the music room. “ the piano’s out of tune, i haven’t played in years, but i used to be quite good. “ he ran his hand along the top of the baby grand. many moons ago, when his father and mother had owned the manor, they’d had a wizarding piano. growing up, whenever he’d slacked off during lessons and mixed up his notes, the piano would practically huff at him; the pedals would stop working, the keys would stick, and he could have sworn the notes went flat whenever he played. replacing it with a muggle piano had been his first act as master of st. james manor when he’d inherited it on his seventeenth birthday. “ i kept waiting for the keys to fly off and strike me. bloody piano. i don’t regret doing away with it for a second. “ he snorted. “ do you play ? “
