Am took the change of conversation gratefully. His engagement was a knot he could almost untangle. Thoughts about Avianna he could touch without burning himself. Even if Avianna was shared territory, so to say, she was at least semi-neutral shared territory.

“Avi made me this suit.” He said, running his hands along the seems of his sleeves in appreciation. “It’s really bloody good. And we’ve been writing each other.”

Emma nodded, looking Amycus up and down to appreciate Avianna’s abilities. She knew how to design, that was for sure. If Emma wasn’t mistaken, the girl had learned to weave spells right into the fabric. It fit Amycus perfectly, the very same way the dress she was wearing fit her. It was made precisely for their shape, their personalities. It was magical, truly. “Your suit is gorgeous, Avianna is so talented.” She agreed, voice fond.

“Writing each other? Well that’s good.” She nodded, realizing even this topic wasn’t exactly the one she wanted to be talking about. “So um, I saw my father.” She admitted before she took a sip of her drink, unsure of what else to say.

Evan found himself rarely amused at these parties. The only thing that was his savior during such events was the way he became inebriated. Choosing not to do it until after he had been at the party for several minutes in respect for Amycus. He couldn’t deal with it anymore, and stood up to venture around the house to find an unoccupied room to get into some uppers or anything really to make a party of interest to him. He’s at an engagement party without his betrothed and he feels slightly off the rails about it. His would have been an event surely he would have had to bring Alice too. Even though rarely anyone got their relationship but them.

There’s already a door a creak open that he slips into. At first seeing the outline of a shadow by the window. The crisp air even brushing against his temple at the length he stood away from the window. Evan runs his fingers through his ginger locks as he finally gazes from the window to Emma when she spoke. “I can’t see the view from here.” He spoke and rounds to where she is to look out the window and then back down to her with a regular tight lipped smile. “Hello Emma. What are you doing here?” Don’t be mistaken he eyed the dip of the unzipped dress before he stalked over to her. Trying to maintain a politeness that Mulciber rarely shows.

Emma turned her head at the sound of Evan’s voice. She watched as he crossed the distance between them. “Hello Evan.” She answered, voice soft. She settled back against the window, letting the cool air soothe her as she watched him. Her shoulders rose in a partial shrug. “I needed a break from questions. You’d think tonight the questions would be about Amycus and Avianna, but no. Nobody wants to talk about the here and now, they just want to talk about what the next big event is. They won’t even enjoy tonight, too busy looking forward to experience it.” She sighed, though really she just didn’t want to answer questions about her own engagement. She wouldn’t have cared about any of the other questions.

“What are you doing here?” She asked, returning the question as she stretched her legs out, toes digging into the rug. She stifled a yawn as she rolled her ankles, willing the muscles in her body to loosen and relax. She just needed a few more minutes and then she’d be willing to zip her dress, put her heels back on, and go back downstairs. “You weren’t looking for me, were you?” She asked, offering a smirk.

“I know you did.” He admitted, looking at the floor rather than one of his best friends. Amycus knew she hadn’t picked sides that she loved them both equally and all that jazz. Didn’t mean he wished she’d just picked sides and chosen Rodolphus. Saved herself from his misery. 

He gave her an aborted shrug and an attempt at a smile. “Still here, aren’t I?” He said, meaning both.

Emma knew she’d been harsh with Amycus before, but he’d been in the wrong. While she still cared for him, she wasn’t going to pretend he wasn’t in the wrong. It did mean that she didn’t quite know how to navigate being around him. Not yet. “Yeah, you are.” She nodded, taking that at least. He hadn’t run off to hide or anything, that was something.

“So, how are you and Avi? Have you talked at all?” She asked, trying to gauge where things were with the pair of them.

Things would likely remain awkward between him and everyone else he knew until he could find a way, any way to resolve and fix the shitshow he’d made out of falling for Rodolphus. Because he kind of was, falling for Rodolphus. He gave her a small smile, a bit fragile at the edges.

“Well, Evan’s already given me a few for good measure, but I suppose you meant the beverage.” He joked, glancing at his mother before leading Emma towards the drinks.

Emma pressed her lips together once more. Evan had punched Amycus? She exhaled slowly through her nose. That wasn’t what she wanted, though she knew that the boys fighting could be cathartic for the both of them. She gave a nod, walking silently through the groups of people to the drinks. Without a second thought, she filled a cup, lifting it to wet her lips.

“You know I meant the drink, Amycus.” She murmured, her eyes tired. “How are you holding up?” She asked, meaning for the party, but in general too.

Regulus was looking for a place to hide for the rest of the party, take a couple doses of potions and wait for it to be over, that whole deal. He wasn’t in the mindset to deal with the amount of people downstairs, feeling increasing anxiety at every forced interaction.

But what was better than hiding alone? Hiding with Emma, maybe getting to cuddle and whine about how terrible this party was. That sounded perfect. So he slipped quietly into the room, undoing his tie and opening the collar of his shirt so that he didn’t feel nearly as strangled.

“View’s nice, but it’s certainly cold outside.”

The lines along Emma’s cheeks softened as Regulus loosened his tie and stepped into the room. She flicked her wand, closing the door behind him. From the looks of it, he needed a hiding place just as much as she did. Her lips twitched, amused. “It is cold outside, but I needed the air. You don’t mind, do you?” She asked as she leaned back against the window, still holding her wand as it pressed into the palm of her hand with her weight. The cold air against her back was most welcome, though she knew she would close the window again before long.

“Are you alright, darling?” There was genuine worry. Regulus had been dealing with a lot, and after the Black gala, she couldn’t imagine his parents were the most pleased with their little heir.

This was why Amycus had not been looking forward to this party. For the gala, he hadn’t needed to play host. Here he had to smile and act gracious and  pretend like he wasn’t falling apart, that he didn’t deserve every inch of the thin press to Emma’s lips. He leaned in to her touch before he could help himself, eyes falling shut.

“I am happy to have you here, Ems.” He mumbled. “I’m always happy to see you.”

“I know you are,” Emma clarified. Of course she knew he was happy she was there. She’d stopped responding to his owls, out of frustration and because other things had occupied her time, and she’d avoided him (and most everyone) at the Black gala. It was easy to assume she was only at the engagement party for Avianna, but that would be a lie. 

She sighed, shifting to glance up at him. “I meant the formalities. Nobody’s listening close enough, Am. I don’t want things to be..stiff between us.” She confessed, knowing they were already quite awkward. “Come on, where’s the punch?”

Emma released a soft sigh as she stepped out of her heels. She didn’t care where they fell, just that they were off her feet. She reached behind her, wiggling some as she wrestled with the zip on her dress, and lowered it until it wasn’t constraining her ribs anymore, and she could finally breathe. She knew she was being ridiculous, the dress had been tailored to fit her perfectly, but the style was tight and she just wanted more air. She could have gone outside, could have stood in the softly falling snow, but the upstairs room was quiet and blissfully free of cigarette smoke. 

She reached up, letting a few of the pins holding her hair in place slip free between her fingertips as soft curls came tumbling down over her shoulders. Ten minutes, then she’d piece herself together again and go back downstairs. Of course, it wasn’t even her night, her stress or problem to worry about, but she’d had too many crowded rooms, parents of too many mutual friends asking about her own engagement because Merlin forbid anything be about the actual couple in question on their night. She hated high society on days like this. She wanted nothing more than to slip into a comfortable sweater and fuck off to some muggle town where nobody knew her and nobody insisted on planning her life for her. Instead she climbed up on the windowsill, dress still falling open in the back, as she reached up to the ancient locks to unclasp them and open the damn window. She bit her lip between her teeth as she focused, pressing up on her toes as she tried to reach, but the ancient house had ancient windows that for some reason needed to be a good two foot taller than she was. Finally she reached the clasp, and sighed in relief as she pressed the window, letting it fall open to welcome the chill, crisp, winter air. 

Emma stepped down, intending to sit against the window sill and let the cool air dance along her back, but when she turned she noticed she wasn’t alone. “Like the view?” She asked, intentional about the double meaning--both her unzipped dress, and the wintry scene outside the window.

Emma kissed him in a burst of excitement after a quidditch play where Evan pulled a play that 1. protected her from a bludger to the head and 2. helped them win the match.

Evan at first bc Emma doesn’t even realize it’s a #thing

Accidentally, they grew closer and then sort of decided they were a thing.

Emma got a nice little flat that needed some love, and spent the time while Evan finished school making it nice, but Evan stayed with her over the summer, and once he graduated it just became their flat.

Just Elwood and an owl.

Yes

Yes, one son.

Yes, Elwood the cat, and an owl.

Emma just spends time gardening, writing, reading, or visiting friends. Evan does his work, and writes to Emma if it’s a long period.

Not really, Emma calls Evan, “Ev” or “Mulci”, and Evan calls Emma “Em”

Just with their names, or they’ll say my wife/husband. Their kids call them mum and father.

Emma insists when they’re dating, except on rare occasion. When they’re married it’s a shared vault so it doesn’t matter.

Once a month for a planned date, then whenever they feel like it throughout the month.

One formal date out, usually to dinner, then other dates could be to Quidditch matches, travel

Yes, Emma insists and has everything carefully planned out

Emma would get Evan something very thoughtful and likely hand-made, or something small such as a charm or trinket that made her think of Evan. Evan would get her something he knew she’d like that was practical and she’d been not buying because of the price.

I didn’t even get to arrange my own marriage, what was the likelihood you would be allowed to? I just did my responsibility to my family as best as I could, you can’t fault me for that. I got Cressida a set of old spellbooks with beautiful covers, I hope she’ll find them useful.

You will be receiving something that says on the label it’s from Cassius. Whether or not it’s actually from him depends on how easy he is to bribe. I’m very much looking forward to receiving a gift from someone as thoughtful as yourself– I’ve got something for you as well.

A servant? Not an elf? That’s… actually not surprising from that household. Chips and a sandwich absolutely are not an acceptable meal though, Rodolphus was right to send help. If I hear any more of such a thing I’m going to send over an elf for the remainder of break. What would you do without an elf? Do the cleaning yourself? That’s ridiculous, a woman of your status does not belong in the kitchen.

I’m very close to my father, I write him nearly every day while we’re at school. It’s not childish at all to miss him– it must be lonely in that house alone.

It was strange, the feeling of being followed. She had made the trip back to Hogdmeade because she’d promised to pick up some sugar quills for Olga, and she had some free time. The woman would be home from her trip with her family in a few days, and Annie had only just remembered that she had promised to pick those up for her, so she decided to get it out of the way as quickly as possible. Honeydukes was a crowded mess, and the streets themselves were pretty crowded, but still, Annie had the feeling of being followed, specifically by someone. And so, she made a sharp turn down an alley, into the shadows and quickly spun, pointing the umbrella in her hand at the intruder and narrowing her eyes slightly. After a moment, her wand came out as well, and scribbled a phrase in the air as she pulled her umbrella back into her hand. ‘What do you want?’

Emma had enjoyed visiting Hogsmeade, but hadn’t exactly wanted to go home right away. She stopped at a few stores, picking up little things here and there: a new quill and ink pot, a packet of Glacial Snowflakes from Honeydukes, a repaired pair of omnioculars from Dervish & Banges. She intended to stop for some tea on her way out of the village, when the girl she’d be unintentionally following spun on her, aiming the umbrella at her. Emma arched a brow, staring at the Hufflepuff. What was an umbrella meant to do? “Nothing.” She answered plainly, finding the girls’ paranoia ridiculous for a moment, before she remembered Hogsmeade hadn’t been the safest of places this past term. She inwardly cringed at the mental images that pulled up. But if she could walk through Hogsmeade largely unbothered, surely this girl could too. “Avoiding someone?” She asked, reaching out to push the umbrella so it wasn’t pointed at her.
