It was a game with the King, even if he didn’t know it yet. Hands pressed against the wall, glancing out from her hiding spot in one of Eblan’s many corridors; a grin on her face. Of course someone would come looking for her, and Edge knew the palace best. She knew he would be the one to find her, and Cuore was quite prepared; intending to jump out in an attempt to scare Edge. No, she doesn’t quite understand the difference between surprise and scare quite yet.

It would be silly if the ruler of Eblan would not also be the strongest and fastest ninja in the kingdom. Politics and battle go hand-in-hand (not together however; as much as Edge would love to punch several old men in their face) so the king easily recognized a harmless but steady gaze upon him.

“ Cuore? You can come out now. ” He called to the child.

This whippersnapper sure did have a lot of gall, questioning his intelligence like that! A damn good ninja he was, but it was doubtful he could put together or operate an airship like this crazy old tinker did! Someone oughta boot him off his high horse! Wasn’t Cid’s job or intent to do that, it was more so teaching Edge a lesson. “You’re takin’ it all wrong! It isn’t about physically going after them! I know ya’d never do that!” And if he did, well… the result wouldn’t end up pretty. “It’s more about how you treat women, how you approach em!”

“ Has it occurred to you that I am not interested in love? ” Edge muttered. He was beginning to believe he was not suited for it. Perhaps he would never know what it’d be like to have a family again - politically, that was not very good. The king would never marry a random maiden for the sake of a heir, that would be cruelty.

“ It has been a long time since those days, Cid. ” He sighed. “ I am much too busy running my kingdom and training my pupils for relationships. ”

“Tch. Unlike you, I actually spend my time trying to improve myself. I don’t need companionship for that. But even if that’s what I spent my time doing, I think it’d be more productive than messing around all day when there’s a country to run.” He crossed his arms, Palom wasn’t really much one to criticize someone else shirking their responsibilities, especially as a kid, Palom wasn’t the best at doing his studies back then. But in this case, when Edge had such an important task on his shoulders…it was a bit hard to watch perhaps. This man was nearly twice his age.

There was a brief moment of anger that passed; it was quick but long enough for anybody to recognize. Air hissed through his teeth and his body tensed to hold down the rage that forced itself into his throat like a burning fire.

“ Seventeen years ago, I had to reconstruct an entire kingdom. My mother and father were murdered. We had nothing but ashes and dust. You don’t know anything about who I am. I wouldn’t hesitate to risk my life and die, if it meant that Eblan would be safe. ”

Edge scoffed. “ I do not expect you to. I’m sure you spend your days playing in the pond with the ducks at home. ” Palom was still as small as he was many years ago, he thought. So young, so filled with purpose and opportunity.

The party wouldn’t have progressed that far or easily without the aid of the engineer. “Far as I’m concerned, this is my business! It’s one thing not to respect your elders, but another not to respect the women in your life!”

Sapphire eyes narrowed down at the other man with vague hint of annoyance. “ If you think that I would harm Rydia or any unarmed women, then you’re dumber than you look. ”

Flirting has never been serious for Edge; it was more of a past-time during the dull days in the walls of the castle. Proclaiming his love and engagements that he saw the world practiced in, was never his strong point. He doubted it will ever be.
