its a mystery
I’m just begging artists who draw post-op trans men to Google what top-surgery scars look like.
There’s this trend of drawing them in a stylized way as very spiky, like someone’s heart rate monitor, and that’s simply not what those scars tend to look like. Tons of variety in thickness and shape, but not like that.
I think at some point people started copying the way other people did it and now there are just too many artists who have never seen what these scars are shaped like, only someone’s interpretation of an interpretation.
Take a look for yourself! Help trans and NB folks feel seen!! That’s what the goal of art like this is in the first place.
I looked up top surgery scars myself to make sure I wasn't talking bs in the tags and came across this!! Putting it here for reference.
And let me be clear: I’m not trying to say that people can’t draw what they would like to in a way that’s meaningful to them.
My point is that this has become so popular as a stylized form that I think many artists are copying the stylization and don’t know what these scars look like. It’s worth looking up and thinking about it as your own artistic choice.
also HAPPY TRANS DAY OF VISIBILITY!!
Three added notes:
1) Just emphasizing what it says above in the pic about how scars fade. I got top (double incision, which is generally considered the most scarring technique) a decade ago and despite not doing anything right as far as scar care, my scars are only visible from certain angles. (Mostly at the sides; lifting arms pulls at those scars and makes them heal less cleanly. Tho even there you have to be like, close and looking for it, on me. I went to the beach with someone several times, shirtless, for many hours each time, and they were shocked to subsequently learn I was trans, having never noticed the scars.)
2) Nipples!!! Many types of top surgery will leave nipples looking a little to a lot unusual. Mine for example are stretched into like, slanty ovals. (I was offered free touch-up surgery to “fix” that but decided it wasn’t worth the bother, btw, so if you’re a trans guy don’t worry that they have to look like that, even if they happen to heal that way.)
3) Lipo scars. Your better top surgeons will often offer lipo at the sides to reduce the likelihood of dog-ears, which leaves these fun little scars that look like division symbols. Like ➗
And again just look at pictures of the scars to get an idea of how they look aside from where they are, because the spiky thing is… kinda coming from nowhere. They maybe look a little like that within the first week and never again. They generally just look like thick, slightly irregular lines that are either a bit paler or a bit darker than the rest of the skin. (Literally just Google “top surgery results” and it will provide the needed references as far as that particular issue.)
Whether they’re paler or darker depends partly on the base skin color, partly on how that individual heals, and mosstly on how old the scars are. As a general rule, they’ll start darker and over time become lighter. Most pictures you’ll see are from relatively soon post-op, so they will show the scars as being darker, but by a significant period post-op, on most people they will end up being lighter than the surrounding skin.
Mine are definitely pale (and I’m just north of looking like chalk) - also worth noting that drain hole scars under the arms (if you had drains) can look differently. Mine are little divots, but one is bigger because I got pulled a bit on my dominant side! There can also be evidence of where areolae are reattached - I have small and faint little dots that look like larger pores.
Also! Some folks’ scars may be thick keloids and be more prominent even with very good scar care.

I forget, is he still a dad in the remake?
Yes and the way he looks at and talks to his daughter makes you believe there's still good in the universe
