MK season 5 episode 2 rant
Hello everyone. If you follow this blog, I assume you love our little MK and know what happened in the second episode of the fifth season of Orphan Black.
I am so sorry and I’m sending you all hugs and love. I don’t know what about all of you, but I took Mika’s death very badly. And I want you all to know that I understand.
Unfortunately we pretty much knew she wouldn’t survive until the end before the episode was even out. I (and many others) had a very bad feeling since the very first season five trailer came out. But it didn’t stop there. There’s no point getting into it now, but I think posting a picture of bloody sheep mask as the official episode poster makes it kind of obvious as to what’s going to happen.
I was thinking through the possibility of MK not surviving since I finished watching season four. The thing is I thought it would make sense for the series. That does not mean I was okay with it though, not in the slightest. I was terrified. But I did have the feeling there was a big possibility that would happen. I knew that if they killed her off it would have a huge emotional impact on the viewers. Not only because it’s one of the clones actually dying, but because of her whole backstory.
MK was the only person who survived the Helsinki “cleaning”. She knew her clones/sisters and their families were being killed. And worst of all she saw her best, and only, friend being murdered right in front of her eyes. By Ferdinand. She ran and was looking for a way to get revenge on him ever since. She dedicated all those years completely alone trying to find out who he was. And she did find out. She came out of hiding for the first time to kill him. But in the end she didn’t. Now Ferdinand knew she was alive and obviously wouldn’t let it go.
After all that, I knew that Ferdinand finishing Helsinki was such a strong emotional theme. Just think about it, Ferdinand tearing MK’s life apart, then, after looking for him for years, she gets convinced to spare him, and then he finds her and kills her. Finishes Helsinki. It would make everyone extremely emotional. And it just seemed to be a too big an opportunity to miss out on. Series makers just love to make their viewers suffer.
The thought of Mika dying made my stomach twist. All I wanted after all those years of complete isolation was for her to finally have a family for the first time in her life. To get to know her sisters and slowly building their trust. But I was slowly preparing for the possibility of her leaving before she had a chance to experience any of that.
Inevitably we have to get to how it happened. Of course it was Ferdinand who ended her life. I think I don’t have to point out that the scene was extremely shocking and violent. Even for those who knew she would die, I don’t think anyone expected that. I hated seeing her like that. It broke me. And I hate Ferdinand more than anyone. I don’t care that he is fictional, I hate him to the very core.
The thing that I couldn’t accept though wasn’t the fact that she died, and not even the way she died. The absolutely worst was the reason Ferdinand did it and what he was saying. Ferdinand was mad at Rachel. He was furious with her. And MK happened to be dressed as her. Of course Ferdinand would kill MK either way, he wanted to finish Helsinki and he was angry for what she did to him in season four. But at that moment I feel like it was more about Rachel than MK. He was killing her violently while talking to her like if she was Rachel. He was imagining Rachel while he was killing her. The reason he did it so brutally wasn’t because he hated her, but because Rachel hurt him. And I just don’t know why did they do that. Why did they let her die as someone else, in a way. I feel like if he told MK how much he hated her and killed her, it would still be better than him calling her by someone else’s name. Forgetting that it was actually MK lying there. I just can’t wrap my head around that. I can’t believe in the last minutes of her life she was treated as someone else, for the most part.
This was supposed to be only a short post acknowledging her death and the pain us MK lovers feel. But I think it is important to say all of that, because I love Mika and I don’t want to just let it slide. Fictional character or not, she means so much to me.
I hope all of you are holding up okay. Some people take deaths of their favourite characters better than others. I just want to tell all of you that I understand what you feel and I’m sorry. And if anyone feels like they want to talk about it, I’m here for you. MK protection squad™ needs to stand together.
Veera Suominen, I love you and I won’t forget you. Good night, MK. I hope you, Niki and Beth are happy together.
Hope you're doing okay. We're all gonna protect her memory, yeah?
That's so sweet of you to write, thank you. I took it very badly, but I'm okay. We will protect her always x I hope you are doing okay too.
Please protect her for us.
I wish I could have. I finished watching the episode about 40 minutes ago and I'm crying, curled up in my bed. I'm sending so many hugs and love to everyone who loves MK x

“You have three minutes.”
“We will remind them that we do not allow ourselves to be tagged, herded, and slaughtered like sheep...”

“… I’m sorry, Niki… I couldn’t save you…”
“I’ll get my parents - they’ll fix everything. You’ll live with us, like sisters.” “Really? You promise?” “I promise.”
“Sarah? Thank you. I didn’t know if you’d let me back in.”
“After the way she left last time, why has she come back.”
“We watch each other’s backs. That’s what friends do.” Friends. She considers us friends... I have a friend.
