More than "here in the Southern Hemisphere we have inverted seasons :)" thing, which is TECHNICALLY true, I would go a step further and encourage to think about that "much of the world does not exactly has a spring-summer-fall-winter season sequence as they show in cartoons"

I will scream about this to anyone who listens forever. AUSTRALIA DOES NOT HAVE "ENGLISH SEASONS BUT BACKWARDS" and the insistence that it does creates a massive layer of alienation from the natural world.

I never really realised how much difference it makes until I went to England and realised that here the change of seasons is an obvious, visible, physical change in the world. Like, everything REALLY IS orange and foggy in autumn! In spring there are flowers EVERYWHERE, so much more than any other season, and the trees really do have all blossom and no leaves. Even if it doesn't snow, in winter there's frost all the time and the trees are bare and the sky is visibly greyer all the time. You don't need to be told "this date is the first day of spring", you can SEE IT (although this is getting way messier and less precise due to climate change).

By contrast, most places in Australia the seasons we're taught feel like arbitrary categories - and is it any surprise considering they're colonial constructs? Orange-leaved autumn and blossom-covered spring is a cartoon stereotype with no relevance on a continent where ALL NATIVE TREES ARE EVERGREEN!! Snowy winters are a joke in the desert, and even sunny summers don't ring particularly true considering that much of the country is in the tropics, where summer means monsoons - not that I've ever seen the concept that WE HAVE A MONSOON SEASON taught at an Australian school.

Most Indigenous nations around Australia had six or more seasons, revolving around wet and dry times as much as hot and cold, and marked by the appearances of certain native animals and flowers. Schools need to start teaching the real seasons, and explaining that climate cycles are too complex to generalise globally, or else we will keep raising generations who view the natural world as hostile and unpredictable and climate predictions as generally irrelevent and frequently wrong - and I'm sure I don't need to spell out why that's a problem in the era of climate crisis.

i want to add that 40% of the world's population lives in the tropics, and the 4 season model just doesn't make much sense for a lot of places in there. usually it's just the wet season/monsoon season and the dry season. it's often hot year round.

the 4 season model as you and i know it is a european invention, though 4 season models aren't unique to europe! most notably china has the same type of season subdivision.

in general the way humans define seasons is largely subjective and varies across cultures. the one you were taught is not at all universal!

isn't it kind of strange that personal space is a thing in multiplayer minecraft? or that people tend to looking at each other's characters when they talk to each other?

these things don't fulfill the inherent social functions they have in person. there is are no facial expressions you're missing if you don't look at the other person's minecraft character. there is no functional difference between standing right next to someone and standing 3-4 blocks away, you're no impeding them in any way

yet people do it anyway. they keep a few block distance between each other. they look at each other when talking, whether it's by going afk with the cursor on the other person or by tracking their idle movement

which gives us these moments where they close that distance or exaggerate the eye contact and suddenly it means something, because it's different! this thing that has no difference in game mechanics, gains meaning through the social conventions. crouching at each other and staring at each other. bumping into the other player. standing right next to a player until slightly nudging them

and that evolves, like real society! it's not something i recall happening that much 10-15 years ago. proximity chat likely has something to do with it, giving the distance some slight game-mechanical meaning and also making the character feel more like a manifestation of the other person instead of simply an object in the game while you were chatting on skype. it pulls people deeper into the game world, increases the immersion and suddenly we have body language in a game where your only ways to manipulate the body are the way it's facing, walking, jumping and crouching. if you want to call it body language there's also the item you're holding - or the two items, in modern minecraft. it's incredible how much of a language can be built with such primitive tools

this is gonna be another repurposed Creatation mechanic but on the topic of a weather overhaul for Minecraft

currently the way weather works in Mc is that there are two random cycles, “rain” and “thunder”

when neither Rain or Thunder is true, it is clear when Rain is true but thunder is false, it is raining when thunder is true but rain is false, it is clear only when both rain and thunder are happening is there a thunderstorm, making them so rare

now, I want to update that to be four separate metrics calculating weather: “Sunniness”, “Cloudiness”, “Raininess”, and “Windiness”, which can carry a number between -1 and +1, denoting whether that weather stat is high or low.

When no other weather is happening, the weather is Clear. When Sunniness is set to above 0.5, it is Sunny. when Cloudiness is set to above 0.5, it is Cloudy. when Raininess is set to above 0.5, it is Rainy. when Windiness is set to above 0.5, it is Windy. when Sunniness and Raininess are both above 0.5, a Rainbow will occur. when Raininess is above 0.5, Cloudiness is above 0.5, and Windiness is above 0.75, then a Thunderstorm will occur. when Cloudiness is above 0.5, Windiness is below -0.5, and Raininess is below zero, then it will be Fog. when Raininess is set to above 0.5, and Sunniness is below -0.5, it will Snow. when Sunniness is above 0.75, Cloudiness is below -0.5, and Windiness is above 0.75, then a Sandstorm will occur.

Different types of biomes can add static “points” to the weather system, making certain weather more or less likely to occur inside them:

“Warm” biomes (deserts, savannas & badlands) add +0.2 to Sunniness and -0.2 to Raininess. ”Humid” biomes (jungles & swamps) add a +0.2 to Raininess and a +0.1 to Cloudiness ”Mountain” biomes (windswept hills, cherry groves, and mountain peaks) add a +0.2 to Windiness and a -0.1 to Sunniness ”Cold” biomes (taigas and dappled forests) add a +0.2 to Cloudiness and +0.1 to Windiness and Raininess ”Snowy” biomes (snowy plains, frozen oceans, etc) add a -0.2 to Sunniness and +0.1 to Windiness all other “Temperate” biomes do not add or subtract anything.

as a result, it’s entirely possible to see different weather conditions occur in different parts of the world at the same time, although they are likely to be very similar. At the same time, it will be very very rare to see, say, a Sandstorm in a Snow biome or a Snow flurry in a Desert, but not entirely impossible!

Contrary to popular belief the biggest beginner's roadblock to art isn't even technical skill it's frustration tolerance, especially in the age of social media. It hurts and the frustration is endless but you must build the frustration tolerance equivalent to a roach's capacity to survive a nuclear explosion. That's how you build on the technical skill. Throw that "won't even start because I'm afraid it won't be perfect" shit out the window. Just do it. Just start. Good luck.

OOOOO fuck seasons but I wanna make a weather update!!

Minecraft currently only has like four weather conditions (clear, rain, thunder, and snow).

new weather effects would be:

Sunny (the regular clouds disappear and the sun takes on a more fiery shape. Water can evaporate out of cauldrons and fire spreads and snow/ice melts twice as fast)

Overcast (similar to the way rain loots in hot biomes, but anywhere. The clouds become more frequent and mobs burn in daylight much Slower (but still do))

Windy (mostly affects particles. Chooses a random cardinal direction each day for winds to blow. Speed of Wind can change. I’d imagine a lot of new stuff could be done with Wind as a feature in earnest though)

Fog (reduces visibility. New mobs potentially, real creepypasta vibes? Would only affect blocks exposed to the sky, kinda like a rain effect. Not the same as simply reducing render distance, so it’s not annoying - things in the distance simply lose detail as they become Gray Silhouettes)

Sandstorm (thunderstorm level rare but reduces visibility. Camel Husk Jockeys will be made either exclusive or spawn more rarely unless here. imo they’re too common in deserts right now so they’ll go here. Exclusive to Deserts and Badlands)

Snow (goes from being a variant of rain to its own thing that can happen anywhere. Snow Layers it spawns have a special “temporary” NBT tag that allows them to melt over time when it’s NOT snowing, reducing annoyingness for builds. May make some annoying chunk places if it snowed for a while and never melted but that can fix itself over time.)

one of the big things about adding “seasons” to minecraft that annoys me is that people forget that for like 67% of the planet the seasons aren’t “three seasons of different vibrant plantlife in different stages before a bleak inhospitable frigid winter”

Even if you just want seasons to be a fun aesthetic thing, what do they look like? Is all the flora gonna look browner in the winter and have little flowers in the spring? Says who?

what if trees had branch blocks?

Break into 1-2 sticks unless mined with silk touch or shears (take longer to break with shears)

different ones for every log block

in item form, can be placed or crafted into 4 sticks (with 1) or 1 Wood (not log) block (with 4 of the same type)

can be placed directionally and stack onto each other like Chorus plants, but won’t connect on the side if they’re both already connected to a base. (no branch grids)

have different ‘thicknesses’ from the base to the end, like Dripstone, but in any direction. The longer branches will have very thick bases, usually only found on things like large jungles or mangroves.

thicker branches can be stood on. Have one way physics like Scaffolding - you can jump down by pressing Shift, and they can be passed through sideways, especially on horseback

Thinner branches can be snapped in half by landing on them from a great height. Branches deal damage when landing on them, and will break causing you to continue your fall. The thicker the branch, the more it will hurt to snap through but also the more it will reduce your fall damage afterwards. Survive by hitting a bunch of branches like a cartoon!

Branches can be placed in the same block space as Leaves. Branches help leaves not decay similarly to Logs. Most trees will have branches inside the leafy canopy.
