No more wool: yes, it is possible

Winter and cold means wool ! To follow the previous « wool subject », today I’m going to present you some alternatives I found to this material that warms us so much!

Replacing wool is good, but by what? A material made with oil that increases pollution, not that cool...

We must first avoid synthetic fibers (not that green) but also cotton, at least the conventional one that we find in every mainstream shops.

What do I propose: recycled fibers (from nylon or polyester); artificial vegetable fibers (from soya or eucalyptus) - but be careful how they have been treated. The top according to me: nettle, hemp, and linen.

Obviously there are some disadvantages to buy these products, probably the price is the first one, but it is interesting to see what alternatives exist / are likely to develop in the future.

Why I no longer wear wool

The textile industry disguises me so much. 

It is not so much the image of the little shepherd in the mountain, who shaves his sheep gently, for his care, then spins his wool quietly, you know. This is not really what is happening today, no no no no. That was about 1500 years ago, at least. No, the wool (and leather of course…) industry are a real problem, you can trust me.

On this point, did you know that originally sheep shed their wool by themselves? Then, breeders have created races that did not shed it. It would not have been very serious if they had stopped there and had just mowed their sheeps … But what we must not forget is that their main objective is to make a maximum of profit. Not to ensure the well being of the animals they exploit. It is obviously not the small farmers who supply the international market.

Personally, I can’t bear to have a corpse on me anymore.

x-treme sweet potato

Hi! Today I’m going to present you one of my best vegetarian recipe: the x-treme sweet potato !! I’ve translated it just for you from http://www.greencuisine.fr/.

You need:

1 sweet potato

200 grams of Quinoa

1 head of broccoli

1 tablespoon of soy sauce

1 spoon of miso

2 tablespoon malted yeast flakes

1 spoon garlic semolina

1.5 cc mustard

120 ml oat milk (or other vegetable milk)

 Preheat oven to 180 ° C.

Poke the sweet potato all over with a fork. Place the potato on a plate in the oven. Let it in the oven until you can easily prick a knife to the heart of the potato (about 1 hour).

Cook the quinoa: at the rice-cooker if you have one. Otherwise boil 1.5 volume of water, then reduce the fire, and continue cooking for about ten minutes. Let it blow up out of fire during 5 min.

Add 1 tablespoon soy sauce.

Bake broccoli briefly: steam, or just whitened with water if you want it crunchy.

When the potato is cooked, cut it in 2.

Take 200 g of flesh and mix it with miso, malted yeast, garlic, mustard and milk. If necessary, add water to obtain the consistency of a creamy sauce.

Salt the inside of the sweet potato. Put the quinoa and the broccoli. Pour in lots of sauce.

Put it in the oven for about 10 minutes. 

It’s ready!!!

You can add toasted seeds or oilseeds on top.

Three documentaries to raise your consciousness

Cowspiracy (2014)

Directed by Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn, based on documents from Green Peace and other environmental organizations, the film explores the impact of animal agriculture on the environment, and investigates the policies of environmental organizations on this issue. Terrifying.

 Earthlings (2005)

A documentary realized by Shaun Monson, with Joaquin Phoenix. Earthlings is a chronicle of (in)human behaviour regarding the animal world. By hidden camera, we discover industries’ practices on animal exploitation. Both informative and horrifying, Earthlings cannot leave you indifferent, even if it sometimes pushes the comparisons too far in my opinion.

 Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead (2011)

In this documentary, we follow the story of Joe Cross, a sick and obese New Zealander, who decides to take care of himself only with his food. During 60 days, he decides to consume only fruit and vegetable juices and to film his experience. It is a beautiful documentary, honest and realistic, which does not try to be moralizing but wants to open consciences. A must see!

Why I started to go vegetarian?

Hi folks!

Today I am going to speak about the reasons that pushed me to go vegetarian…

The animal cause was always a subject that I've long had my heart set on. But without my realizing it, I acted from my earliest childhood like all those who continued to agree without saying anything. I ate meat, as the majority of the population. Even though I did not like the taste of meat - any meat - I could not help believing that a vegetarian diet was very praiseworthy, but that you could not be vegetarian and healthy. Even less if you go vegan!

And then, from food scandal to food scandal and seeing the awful animals’ conditions in slaughterhouses (thank you Facebook), I got informed about vegetarian diet, and I had a sudden awareness: since all that time, I continued to perpetuate, as everybody does, something that I totally disagreed and disliked. So, let’s start to change this !

Because I am currently a student and I live on my own, changing my diet has not been dazzling. I didn’t really liked meat anyway. I had already thrown out from my plate all pork products and other industrial meats. And I’ve read a book called Antispéciste, written by Aymeric Caron, which has reinforced my conviction. Then I re-learned how to cook, and that's really actually great! I don’t say that meat-eaters cook badly, but I confess that before I started to get vegetarian diet, I did not take too much time to vary the flavours in my way to cook... What I thoroughly experience in my vegetarian cooking!

It is a bit cliché to say, but it is still true: being a vegetarian has proved me that I was able to follow my convictions without depriving me of anything (although I’ve not deleted cheese yet...).

How to get proteins when you go vegetarian/vegan?

Hi there!

Today I’m going to explain how staying healthy without eating any animal products – meat, eggs, milk etc. Vegetarian food gives many essentials nutrients, but getting proteins could become quite difficult for inexperienced people.

Green peas: 7.9 grams of proteins per cup (about the same as a cup of milk!)

Lentils (red and green): 18 grams per cup

Quinoa: 9 grams per cup

Beans: it depends of the variety, but two cups of kidney beans, for example, contain about 26 grams and Black beans contain 15 grams per cup

Tempeh and tofu: about 15 and 20 grams per cup, they are some of the highest vegetarian sources of protein!

Nuts and nut butters: 6 grams of protein per ounce

Soy milk: 4 to 8 grams per 8 ounces

Here is an overview of the possibilities to find proteins in your food, without eating any meat of course!

The best advantage of this lovely coffee shop is that you can create your own bento, choosing between different ingredients, all 100% healthy and 100% gluten-free ! 

Warning : It should be noted that the bentos aren’t especially veggie. Nevertheless, no animal protein are used for all hot drinks and pastries !  

The ideal place to have a break !

Specialized in Matcha making, a really finely grounded green tea powder from Japan, NeoBento offers various choices in its menu ! Personally, I’ve choosen to drink a Matcha cappuccino with almond milk, and a piece of a delightful cake made of nuts, chocolate and sesame: fantastic !
