Tumblr Boycott to Protest Continued Lack of Movement to Ban White Nationalists

Tumblr @staff have been silent about the use of this site by white nationalist bloggers, while numerous other sites (see this post) have made actions to ban nazis/white nationalists/”alt-right”/fascists. Tumblr needs to know their lack of action is unacceptable. I love my tumblr community and want to stay, but if this continues, I will have to considering leaving.

I suggest we push back, and unite to boycott on a certain date. I’m arbitrarily suggesting September 1st - it’s nine days from this post, and that gives it enough time to hopefully get spread as far as possible. Boycotts only work if lots of people do it. Please consider joining me and logging off tumblr on September 1st, to let them know we’re serious about their apathy towards white nationalism.

Let’s also let @staff know that as they’re trying to increase advertiser spend, they should be well-aware of most ad tech companies (on the buy and sell side) have explicit rules against hate speech. You can tell Tumblr is aware of this because they’ve doubled-down on trying to locate the NSFW posts (quite badly based on how their technology fails so often) for what I imagine is brand safety for advertisers.

Given groups like Sleeping Giants has been successful in amplifying the voices of users protesting brands appearing on Breitbart, any other platform could be next in having their advertisers signaled with a screenshot of said posts where hate speech is proudly displayed against an ad served… well, you get the drift.

this saddens me so much but I’m glad that they are sending some sort of identifier with the panthers. I hope they are numbered and I hope they record those numbers.

Recasting needs to stop, but sadly the people who openly support it are just going to turn a blind eye to it, or make up some excuse as to why it’s ok.

The people at IH are literally BEGGING you to stop.

I have never bought a deliberately verbatim copy of an artist’s work. I have purchased different brands of similar colour make-up, different brands of similar creme filled cookies, but you see mass produced items such as this are different then a verbatim copy of artist’s sculpture advertised with the artists original stock photos.

Quit making up bad excuses for your theft!

Who’s the bully really? No pro-artist I’ve ever met. I’ve only ever been bullied by pro recasters for being “hypocritical” or “rude” for pointing out their faulty reasoning.

This disgusts me. For the record, my pro-artist stance extends wa-a-a-a-ay beyond recasts. Like @orangeotis I have never deliberately purchased a counterfeit. I do not pirate music or download torrents of shows, video games, or e-books because I hold myself to a high moral standard. I buy legit dolls within my price range, and I save up money by forgoing other luxuries, like dining out at restaurants, going to the movie theatre, and—you know—enjoying other hobbies. (That’s not to say folks shouldn’t have multiple hobbies, I just can’t afford more than one at this point in my life). So to call me a hypocrite is… unnerving. To call me a bully for being vocal about supporting artists and my fellow content creators? Heartbreaking. Who’s the one name-calling here?! Never in my damn life have I bullied anyone. I strive to promote love. Kindness! Hatred and apathy bring me nothing but sorrow.

But recasts are theft and a matter of ethics. They are destroying this hobby. I have SEEN how much they have destroyed this hobby in the past eight-almost-nine years I’ve been a part of it. As an artist and author myself the issue is very important to me. I will not stay silent.

Do I try my hardest to spread love and tolerance on a daily basis? YES. Do I realize people make mistakes and can change. YES. I am here to help ANYONE who wants to go legit. With that said, though, I do not and will never support recasting.
