i have something to discuss. i am aware that i don’t go on here, but at this current point in time i feel like i should say something about a certain user on this platform. in the brief period i knew them, they have dead named, misgendered, insulted my art ability, despite me being a beginner for the most part, and convinced an entire group to kick me out because he couldn’t groom me like he did the rest of the people he knows.

he goes by nijiomii, and i’m not the only one who has been wronged by him. to this day, i have not received a proper apology for the trauma and pain he’s caused me. i have to take medication to prevent my panic attacks about the trauma he has caused me.

i only have my word for most of this, which is extremely frustrating. if i had solid proof, i would definitely show it here. but i do not. i only have my word, and i can tell you for certain that i am nothing but honest in my words. this post has taken me too long to make, due to me being scared. i did see his post regarding certain accusations, and i was mentioned in it, although not by name.

in my honest opinion? it was just a pile of manipulative, victim- blaming crap. he only wanted the backlash to stop because it made him look bad, nothing more. he deserves nothing he has now, i wish other people could see that, but that is only a wish, a wish that is most likely never going to come true.

Okay, so. My boyfriend and I have been in the process of moving for a few months, and almost all our money is locked off in reserve to pay for it. Unfortunately… late in the moving process, they bothered to mention to us that there was an issue with the building, and now we can’t move forward until a lawyer (also expensive) signs off on everything.

This has dragged on past the point of our old lease running out, so we had to pack all our stuff and move out with nowhere new to go. We’re both safe (couch surfing), but it’s an insecure situation, and we’re having to go from place to place a lot. Also, we can’t be together and that is not Fun or Good.

I could go into the usual stuff about how I’m queer and disabled, and my boyfriend is autistic, but there are definitely people more in need than me, so. What I want to be able to do is pay for a cheap AirBnB in my hometown (I’m in a different part of the country atm) so the two of us can be together and not constantly moving. I appreciate any support, including reblogs! Likes don’t do anything to help, I’m afraid.

Hello! I was hoping to get some help with shading and lighting! They’re one of my biggest weak points :-O!

Thank you for submitting! This looks like a great emotional scene so let’s give it some light and shadow. 

First I’ll show you my overall process, then I’ll break down what I did in detail. There are five steps here. 

The first picture is the original. In the second, I used a multiply layer to lay down a tone - this is a quick hack to harmonize the colors in a scene.

In the third, on a separate multiply layer, I blocked in shadow shapes. Don’t be afraid to really block in around half of the space in shadow, more if there’s less light and less if there’s more light, of course.

In the fourth, I lay down highlights using an overlay/screen/lighten layer. It would be more authentic to color-pick your highlights, but using add layers like these helps get them down quickly. 

In the fifth, I add darker shadows, brightest lights, and using a blending brush to blend the edges.

Looking closer at the third picture, you’ll notice that I vary the coloration of the shadow. This gives it more depth. The color of a shadow can add to the mood of a piece. Think about how things around the object will reflect their colors onto it. This also delves into a phenomenon called “subsurface scattering”.

By the fifth stage it’s mostly about clean up. I’m adding the darkest darks, near-black where objects touch, since no light at all will reach those places. I’m utilizing something called “ambient occlusion”.

There are many different kinds of ways to blend. You may not even want to blend the shadows and leave them crisp in that cel-shaded technique. Having hard or soft edges to your shadows can give different effects, such as interpreting what material it is, how intense the light is, and even the mood of the piece.

Using a brush on a lower opacity, I continuously eyedrop colors and apply brush strokes in order to achieve a smooth blend.

I hope this was helpful! One of the things I want you to keep in mind are to not be afraid of SUPER DARK shadows. I had this issue as well, and I was always scared of going too dark. In a digital medium, you can do whatever you want without consequence, so try going wild with the shading to get used to it and avoid those timid little shadows.
