I just sent my last research assistant-related email.
Ever.
And I'm kind of sad.

I just sent my last research assistant-related email.
Ever.
And I'm kind of sad.
I haven't posted in like two months.
Oops.
But anyways, I just finished organizing all the images I found last spring into a slideshow last week and I sent it to my supervising professor and he emailed me back saying, "This is wonderful."
And my first reaction was, "no, you're wonderful!" because that email made my entire week.
(by rawmeyn)
I feel like all I have been doing all week is looking at pictures of Mary and baby Jesus.
Which is frustrating, as that's not at all relevant to the research I'm doing.
after reading the first paragraphs of all of my museum/artifact readings, i am of the firm belief that objects are an important part of history, contrary to the belief of the readings.
you don’t NEED to take kids to a museum and show them a sarcophagus but you SHOULD. the difference between reading, seeing, and involving is HUGE. A kid can see that sarcophagus, which may not really provide any new information to a formal historian, but it is still an important part of history. It is enriching an education. If one kid out of 5000 sees that sarcophagus and goes “dude…that’s cool,” then, as a historian/curator/ whatever, you have done your job. You have made history, an intangible concept, REAL for someone.
Artifacts are important.
FIVE HOURS
So I've been looking up this Tintoretto painting that, until recently, was mistakenly attributed to Schiavone, and some of the articles stated that the painting, which currently is in London, is part of a "trilogy," with the other two paintings being in the U.S.
One of them is at the Art Institute of Chicago.
It's so close to me. And I have to go see it.
Ladies and gents, I am proud to announce that I am BACK!
I really miss looking at Venetian Renaissance art. So much. Earlier this week, I was with my sister at a college visit and someone mentioned art history and it made me think of all the work I did this semester. And I realized that I really missed it and remembered how much I loved looking at the paintings from last semester. Even though I'll be doing something different this upcoming semester, I'm excited to get back into it and feel this kind of healthy pride and attachment again.
SOMEONE (specifically, an editor) IS INTERESTED IN THE CRUSADES SOURCEBOOK. EEP TODAY IS EXCITING.
So Professor Perry (the professor in charge of my research assistantship, who also happens to be my history advisor and my Catholic Studies advisor) loaned me this book as a a starting place for my research and OH MY GOSH I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO TERRIFIED OF HURTING OR LOSING A THING IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.
LOOK IT'S MY FACE.
Also, I have never been this intimidated by a book. Not even the one-volume Italian edition of LotR. Not even that really old book of Venetian art that I couldn't take out of the library because it was probably close to 200 years old.
Except I remembered that they chased a goose...drat...and that was such a great url...
Also, I may or may not have saved "crusaderschasechickens" for when I change...
Make way for changes!
So as much as I've loved working with Venetian art, it's time for me to move on. I had my final meeting with my professor on Monday and this summer and next fall, I'll be helping him compose a Crusades sourcebook with longer excerpts of sources from the first through fifth Crusades in order to give a broader perspective and context.
What I'll be doing is 1) reading the sources 2) picking the most important 20 pages or so from each source and 3) editing the selected bits. Eventually, this'll be made into a sorucebook that will be used for said professor's Crusades class in the spring (which I'll be in). If it does actually get published, my name gets to be on it, which is great for starting to make a name for myself in academia. Plus, if there's any money, I'll get half of it.
So yeah. Wow. I'll be posting Venetian art for the next couple weeks, but then the blog and URL are going to totally change.
I'll make a full post on this later, but basically, I'm not going to be researching Venetian art this summer/next fall, so once I'm done with the semester, I'm going to totally revamp this blog, URL and all.
THIS IS THE BEST PAINTING I’VE EVER SEEN BECAUSE THIS GUY IS JUST STARING LONGINGLY INTO THE SKY AS JESUS BLASTS AWAY ON HIS FUCKING ROCKET CROSS I DON’T KNOW WHAT THIS ARTIST WAS TRYING TO CONVEY BUT THEY OBVIOUSLY DID NOT SUCCEED BECAUSE ALL I CAN SEE JESUS FLYING AWAY WHILE ELTON JOHN’S “ROCKET MAN” PLAYS AND THE GUY IS WHISPERING “fly away jesus you beautiful son of a bitch”
I have become almost depressingly desensitized to such works of beauty. Weird stuff like this happens allllll the time in the paintings I see.
that shocking moment when you find out a renaissance artist was straight
