 Monster hunting. Not usually something Magnus partook in, because he always felt bad when innocent creatures had to be killed. And plus, he wasn’t a fighter. But he had heard about people going missing up in the mountains. A year before, two girls had vanished, A man had been investigated, but nothing had come from it. 

It wasn’t an official quest, no. Since they saved the world from Ragnorok, Magnus didn’t really get official quests anymore. And generally, he was fine with that. But these disappearances raised some eyebrows, and seemed almost magical. Not magical like “wow that’s so amazing and magical” but like “wow that makes exactly zero sense, surely magic is involved”.

But maybe he should have thought this more through. Walking in a creepy murder tunnel without even Blitz made Magnus Chase, son of Frey, extremely nervous.

“Oh great plan, Magnus.” He muttered to himself. His pendant hummed, as if agreeing. “Let’s get as far as possible from the hotel, without friends- except your amazing sword Jack-” He added quickly, “hunting monsters. Totally won’t end up deader than you already are.”

Finally, the paranoia bugged him too much, and he tugged on the rune around his neck, summoning his glowing sword. And then he realized a mortal was staring at them. 

“Uuuuuuh.... pay no attention to the glowing sword.” He tried. Normally, mortals wouldn’t stop and stare, almost slack jawed. They tended to just keep walking. 

“Can he see me, Magnus?” Jack asked. 

“Fuck me if I know.” Magnus muttered back.

This is private property. Magnus wanted to laugh, but managed to pass it off as a cough. He would love to see this guy try to have a legally dead guy arrested for trespassing.

“Is it? My bad. I didn’t know.” He shrugged, then decided to see what information he could get out of the guy. “My brother disappeared in these woods a few nights ago. I was hoping to find him without getting any police involved. We were out camping a ways back, little vacation just the two of us. He was gone by morning.”

He’d gotten good at lying since living on the street. “Do you know anything about this place?”

Then the guy pointed at Jack and asked if he could see him. Well. That answered that question. “Er. Yeah. That’s my sword. I guess you can see through the Gap somehow, otherwise he wouldn’t be working. This is Jack. He’s my friend. A family heirloom. Generally harmless unless you count his singing.”

Jack glowed more brightly, darting around the strange as if examining him. Which was impossible because he didn’t have eyes. It only ever stopped him when he couldn’t read ASL (Alf Sign Language).

“Sharpest blade in all the nine realms. Can you tell me about these mines and why you’re dressed like you got done skinning frisky teenage girls?” Magnus gestured to the guy’s outfit. Something about it suggested horror movie killer.

The sword... was real? But that didn’t make sense. It was on the list of things that didn’t make sense and he should therefore take note of when trying to decide what was real and what wasn’t. And the stranger didn’t seem too shocked by the sword. So maybe he wasn’t real? But then who was he?

His outfit? Josh looked down, taking in the costume he’d used to scare the shit out of his friends. Looked like he’d just gotten done skinning teenagers. He laughed. “I did.” No. Wait. The guy didn’t know the whole story. He waved his hands to stop the other from freaking out. “I was making a horror video of my friends. I was the mysterious stranger.” Arms out and a slight turn to show off the great costuming choice. “Scary right? Just WAIT until the video’s online. Then you’ll see something really scary.”

Camping. On his family land. He shook his head. “How did you and your brother get up here. The cable car stays locked.”

Jon hummed thoughtfully. There were a few ways he could answer. Getting into a philosophical debate seemed unpleasant at the moment, and taking him too literally seemed unideal.

Finally he laughed. Not a mean one, or one where Josh might think himself the end of a joke. But a lighthearted one like Josh himself had told a funny joke.

“It’s a song from a TV show!”

Oh. Well that makes him look dumb doesn’t it? He laughed too, lighthearted as well, though a little sheepish.

“I uh… I guess I never saw that one.” He reached out to ruffle Jon’s hair gently. Jon was a good kid. Easy to get along with and easy to love. Not like Josh himself.

“How’s the whole song go?”

Jon wondered if there was something about his hair that just made everyone want to touch it all the time. Not that he minded. He loved all the little touches he got.

“Steven Universe is really good! It’s about this kid named Steven living with refugee war criminal non binary rock ladies and learning about his powers because he’s half human and half rock lady. They use love and friendship to save the day. I like it. Especially because a lot of things  All the songs are good!! Like Do it for Her/Him??? It’s such a good song!! And Love Like You? I ALWAYS THOUGHT I MIGHT BE BAD, NOW I’M SURE THAT IT’S TRUE, CAUSE I THINK YOU’RE SO GOOD, AND I’M NOTHING LIKE YOU, LOOK AT YOU GO, I JUST ADORE YOU, I WISH THAT I KNEW, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK I’M SO SPECIAL-” You’re going to have to stop him, otherwise he’s going to sing for the next two hours.

That song touched a little close to home. Something about it made him feel... bad. Like he was the one singing it. I always thought I might be bad, now I'm sure that it’s true, cause I think you’re so good, and I’m nothing like you...

Regardless, it was fun to see Jon singing his heart out. Josh just laughed and clapped. “Woo! Another! Sing another one!” The opposite of making the boy stop, he was encouraging him to keep going.
