They used to say one nuclear bomb can ruin your whole day. It was sort of a joke, until the June morning those bozos whacked us with an electromagnetic pulse from eighty-miles up. You always hear people yapping on how it was all different before the Pulse. Land of milk and honey blah, blah, blah, blah with plenty of food and jobs and things actually worked. I was too young to remember, so, whatever ⌠The thing I donât get is why they call it a depression. I mean, everybodyâs broke, but they arenât really all that depressed.
In 2001, a real-world exercise tested the emergency response system to a localized bio-terror attack. This operation was called Dark Winter. Operation Dark Winter was the code name for a senior-level bio-terrorist attack simulation conducted from June 22ndâ23rd. It was designed to carry out a mock version of a covert widespread smallpox attack on the United States and focused on evaluating the inadequacies of a national emergency response during the use of a biological weapon against the American populace.
In 2009, the CCBS and CSIS conducted a secondary real-world exercise after discovering that the virus would be harder to control in areas such as large cities and locations that held an extensively large populace. The NSA argued the fact that, without practiced procedures, it would be unorthodox to perform such research on a city already suffering from viral instability. Neither founders found his dispute credible and instead performed the procedure anyways.
Dark Winter revealed how vulnerable we had become. Our lifestyle, our security, our safetyâall depended on the delicate and unstable economy we lived in. We had created a system so complicated that we were no longer capable of understanding how to control it. Oil, power, shipping, transportâwere all within our complex world. The more complex it got, the more fragile it became.
On November 23rd, New York became the first city to suffer Dark Winterâs nuclear blast and after thatâseveral others. Having mutated over 50% of its population and creating a new breed of anthropomorphic disaster known as Night-Stalkers, citizens soon saw the aftermath with which Dark Winter would actually create. Within just a few days, the simulation spiraled out of control. The operations predictions of a rapid breakdown in essential institutions, civil disorder and massive civilian causalities became effective in a matter of days.
Months after the initial blast, anyone alive at that point was recognized as immune to the virusâ effect. Although unimmune survivors can be infected through saliva or blood if attacked by one of these creatures, the immune have a safeguard. Having been unable to infected neither virus nor attack. There seemed to be no pattern to the immunity gene, and it was found not genetic, as many theories had suggested. The one identifying feature of the immune seemed to have been in the eyes. Immune survivorsâ eyes would seem much paler in the sunlight than those without immunity.
Four years later, Dark Winter finally began to die down. The Anonymous revealed secrets the Government held while conducting past experiments to potentially resolve bio-nuclear warfare. But most failed to reveal the truth behind these practices, leaving people to rebel against their unorthodox practices. Once Dark Winter revealed how vulnerable the American populace had become, terrorist took it upon themselves in attempting to further weaken the infrastructure of our nationâand succeeding.
On June 1, 2013, a group of terrorist detonated a bomb over several cities throughout the United States, giving off an electromagnetic pulse stationed eighty miles in the atmosphere, essentially destroying the vast majority of computer and communication systems. Every computer and communications system in America was damaged and all digital information was instantly erased, effectively throwing the country into utter chaos.
Hours after the electricity went down, everyone in the country panicked when it was realized that there was no immediate solution to the problem, and many were reduced to almost barbaric methods to ensure their survival. Another effect of the Pulse was bankruptcy. Since most American-based banks used computers to monitor transactions, the database was wiped clean and a lot of people suddenly suffered from extreme poverty. America went from super-power to third-world country in a matter of days while seeing riots and chaos tear the country apart and allowing the immune refugees to meld into the anonymity the Pulse has created.
In 2017, a new Presidential Directive will be signed quietly into law. It will map out the Governments response to crisis. A plan to cope with Dark Winter and the unforeseen events of the Pulse. It is known as the Righteous. There are rumors of shadow agencies, sleeper cells and covert agents. But nothing can be confirmed. Our complex world was prime for breakdown and once the chaos began there wasnât enough resources to save us all. The only questions left are âŚ
