It's been 6 years of my last post on tumblr so I'll just reblog my current obsession, Lara Croft. (Currently playing through Tomb Raider 3 in the remastered collection.)
Next Generation Magazine Issue #49, January 1999 - Tomb Raider 3 Issue. ARE we still in love?
I watched the recent episodes of Steven Universe Future. Just wanted to say I love Peridot. That’s it. That’s the post.
Felt like posting something on this uniquely fine day.
I’ve neglected this blog once again as I just seemingly lost interest in writing which I want to correct again.
An update on my impulse watch of Doctor Who, I’m all caught up and watching the new episodes as they come out. Going forward, I think I should just focus on my thoughts on each Doctor after Tennant instead of each episode.
My current obsessions at the moment are watching Star Trek Voyager and thinking about doing a rewatch of each episode of RWBY. That series I genuinely enjoy and want to express that love on my blog in a similar style as I did with Steven Universe forever.
No, I have no interest in continuing that journey despite being up to date with that series.
If I do the RWBY rewatch, I wonder how far I’ll get before abandoning that idea and get obsessed with something else....
Okay universe, you made a very sound argument. Vegeta is a better parent than Goku. Now I want to be convinced that he is better than Chi-Chi. I know Bulma is great as a parent, but Chi-Chi I have yet to see much discussion on. I feel she doesn’t get the same amount of scrutiny as her husband as I feel she is often the opposite end of Goku’s so called parenting tactics.
Doctor Who Impulse Buy Part 10
Bare in mind that my “place of work” is slowly destroying any kind of semblance of motivation to write so I’m posting this with ???% alcohol content flowing within me so expect some grammatical errors. I’m literally writing on the fly to regain some sanity back.
The Doctor’s Daughter - I’m am not going to lie, I’m crushing really hard on Georgia Moffett. Something tells me that David Tennant shares this sentiment. She is quite an attractive actress as well as having a bit of charm to her. What you don’t believe me? Here is what she looks like:
See how delightful she is? Throughout the entire episode, she exudes this aura that I couldn’t help notice. Beyond this magnetic character, this episode is kind of bland throughout. I couldn’t care much about the major conflict, Martha Jones accidentally being there is kind of a waste and the alien race introduced is only interesting in design only. By the time the episode wrapped up, the only significant thing occurring was infatuation towards Jenny/Georgia Moffett. I felt she was literally the only aspect that was genuinely well written as it created some great moments with The Doctor.
The Unicorn and the Wasp - Agatha Christie and The Doctor, what could go wrong? I found myself really enjoying this episode. (I’ve read And There Were None in high school and found myself enjoying said story.) The actress they got to play Agatha is quite good and found myself getting into mystery until the reveal. Without spoilers, I found the so called alien race introduced could be filed into the ‘lazy writing’ department.
Beyond that, I really enjoyed the episode overall. There are quite a bit of memorable moments between The Doctor, Donna, and Agatha that I felt was worth the watch.
Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead - I really, really, really, enjoyed this two-parter. It introduces River Song for the first time in the series who I have grown to really enjoy. She has quite an enigmatic personality that just makes me wonder what she is going to do next. Some horror movie feels blended in with this series always creates some of the best moments of The Doctor’s personality. Everything that accumulates into what is going on to the ending is handled exceptionally well. Definitely a highlight of the season as this shows off every best aspect of this series. Particularly the characters and creativity thrusting them in certain situation. Every person actor/writer brought their “A game” to make every moment the best.
A Clone Wars Chronological Rewatch?
I’m heavily considering doing a chronological rewatch of the The Clone Wars animated series. After watching a couple of episodes already discussed with the youtube channel Star Wars Explained, I feel compelled to do the same.
What I’m feel like doing is instead of the blitz way of reviewing episodes like I’m doing with Doctor Who right now, is to be more thoughtful of each episode and analyze the quote that appears at the start. Little known fact about me, during my sophomore year of high school, my English teacher would leave quotes on the chalkboard for us to discuss when class started. I am fully prepared for this.
When I get started with this, I’m going to space it out so no daily posts, unless I actually jump ahead and watched more episodes and finish writing before hand.
This is going to be my therapy for the coming weeks since my current job did a radical shift change with the department I work at and such change is the equivalent of a dumpster fire and the reason said fire started was because the town is burning down. Just gotta take it one day at a time now.
Doctor Who Impulse Buy Part 9
Voyage of the Damned - Without any doubt in my mind, this has to be one of the dumbest episodes of Doctor Who. Is their some written code that if you have a science fiction show, you have to make an episode that revolves around the sinking of the Titanic in some way? Seems like a thing I noticed since Rick and Morty did an episode as well as Futurama.
So The Doctor ends up on a space cruise ship that modeled after the Titanic. Gee, I wonder what is going to happen while on board..
There really isn’t a whole lot to say as I found everything that happens to be on the same quality of writing as one of the Sharknado movies. When the last side character “nobly sacrifices” themselves I could hardly contain my laughter. It’s like the writers didn’t even put in any effort into the plot. If you like this, more power to you, I just feel everything was handled poorly.
The only highlight was the couple that won the tickets to board the cruise ship. I found them quite delightful and entertaining with their interactions with each other and The Doctor.
Partners in Crime - Loved this episode. Donna’s reintroduction to this show is quite magnificent. The humor is on point and the scenes where Donna and The Doctor are narrowly missing each other are filmed perfectly. Villain-wise wasn’t entirely too bad as she wasn’t too over the top and blended into the humorous tone throughout, despite she was creating baby aliens out of the fat of humans. I particularly loved the ending where Donna just so happens to have all her luggage in her mother’s car in the off chance she runs into The Doctor. This episode is simply great.
The Fires of Pompeii - I have some mixed feelings on this one. On one hand, all the moments between Donna and The Doctor are great as usual along with their interactions with the main antagonist this time around. On the other hand, the antagonist felt kind of bland. He didn’t seem threatening in the slightest and the summoned bad CGI monsters looked really awful. Some of the side characters are quite good, mainly Peter Capaldi and the serious moment where Donna asked The Doctor to save him and his family is acted very well. Catherine Tate is quite the versatile actress and now I want to watch more of her acting chops outside of Doctor Who.
Planet of the Ood - A very much better episode than the Pompeii one as it creates a more interesting twists and turns as to what is going on. The Ood returns and we learn more of their backstory which turns out to be more tragic than what I was expecting. Many great moments between the duo and a villain that gets what they deserve in a satisfying way.
The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky - What a weird race of beings the Sontaran are. Do love their designs and the makeup effects used to create them. I also enjoy their speaking mannerisms that remind me of the Daleks but what they say is a bit more endearing rather than annoying. I find them quite entertaining villains.
We get more fantastic moments between Donna and The Doctor but this time with Donna’s Grandfather and mother and they have great chemistry with one another. I’m particularly fond of Wilfred Mott as he is quite charismatic and endearing towards The Doctor and Donna. Every moment between Donna and Wilfred are so adorable to watch.
My only complaint is the one side character who is a genius who goes off the deepend with his inventions and wanting to restart the human race on another planet. I found his behavior quite irritating and glad all his peers turned on him at the end of it all.
Doctor Who Impulse Buy Part 8
Human Nature/The Family of Blood - The Doctor becomes human in order to escape a group of aliens that can inhabit people and commands scarecrows. While human, The Doctor settles into a life of a teacher at a school full of boys that are learning how to fight in a war in the 1920′s. There is also a romance he develops that ultimately ends up Umm...okay.
The antagonists don’t feel threatening in the slightest. Well they did kill a bunch of people but the death counter per episode always tend to be quite high. It’s just that when they showed up, I just couldn’t take them too seriously. Their acting was suppose to be creepy as they are controlling people that either work/attend at the school. Instead they just come off a little goofy, especially the lead child actor the episode focuses on.
When everything is all said and done, the whole point of these episodes is to set up the fact that The Doctor can turn himself human, make himself lose his memory, and hide his Time Lord essence in a pocket watch. And that is it. That is only the worthwhile thing that I really remember. This is merely set up to explain what happens in the final episodes of the season.
Blink - A Doctor-lite episode that is simply fantastic. I loved the main character (I’m crushing on her real hard) and how everything is written and paced. The weeping angels are terrifying to look at and are brilliantly written conceptually. After learning about peoples reaction to this episode, I understand why many praise it as one of their favorite. Both the editing and writing are directed exceptionally well that it just seamlessly comes together at every moment. Definitely watch this episode when you can. I don’t want to spend too much writing here as I don’t want to spoil it for you.
Utopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords - This season’s finale is great, except for one moment. How The Doctor turns everything around at the end.
Utopia is a great start with a returning Jack Harkness who is ever so delightful. They end up at the End of the Universe to find that humans are still alive along with a bunch of cannibals. There they meet a scientist that is trying to save the remaining humans whom is called The Professor and somehow owns the same watch that The Doctor owned and used on the episode Human Nature. Turns out The Professor is actually a Time Lord and long standing foe of The Doctor, The Master. (I’m sensing a theme here.)
The following episode, The Master ends up in modern day (mid 2000′s) and manages to become elected as Prime Minister of Great Britain. While as Prime Minister Harold Saxon, he is contacted by “aliens” and uses said “aliens” to take over the world along with a stolen Tardis. At the end of this episode, it ends on a sour note. The Master is triumphant against The Doctor and Martha Jones is tasked to save the world while The Doctor is aged by The Master somehow.
The last episode takes place a year after The Master takes over Earth and most of the time is spent on Martha Jones’ journey to create a way to defeat The Master. When the time came to execute a year long counterattack, I’m way too damn confused on the mechanics. Martha tells people all over the world to say, “Doctor” at particular moment. Everyone in the world does, and somehow that rejuvenates The Doctor into his younger self. I don’t know how, they just did and The Doctor does his usual thing to save the day. There is a emotional moment between the two Time Lords and Martha decides to part ways with The Doctor on account of many death dodging antics and pining after him was unhealthy. Great character growth with her. I’m liking her more than Rose.
The Master I really enjoyed. I feel he is a step up against Daleks as they start to sound annoying after awhile. When the reveal of the Professor’s true identity is revealed, I was intrigued. Later on, as I got accustomed to his personality and his scheming ways, I have grown to really enjoy his manipulative and eccentric ways. He is unapologetic evil (and at moments silly) and done well. John Simm did a really great job.
I just really don’t like the whole ass pull plan of The Doctor’s. It just feels so dumb in retrospect.
At the end of my viewing of the Tenth Doctor’s run, I’ll do a more in depth critique on the companions. I feel like expressing my thoughts then in order to elaborate on Martha Jones some more. The same will be for Rose, Jack, and Donna.
Doctor Who Impulse Buy Part 7
Daleks In Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks - This is a really good two-parter with a memorable cast. Andrew Garfield is somehow here, just not as Spider-man. (I’m now imagining a crossover of Spider-man and Doctor Who.) The Daleks are at it again and it’s up to The Doctor and friends to stop them from taking over the world. In this go around, the Daleks are experimenting on humans to enslave them as pig people for some dumb reason. On top of that that have created normal looking humans that they can control only for it to blow up in their face. On top of also that, the leader of the Daleks decides to absorb a human in order to become a Dalek/human hybrid only for the rest of Daleks to turn on him. There is quite a whole lot going in these episodes.
For me the best parts were the supporting cast here. Andrew Garfield is quite good but for me the character that I really liked the best was Hugh Quarshie playing Soloman, a leader of Hooverville that looks out for people who became homeless during The Great Depression. Everything about him I really liked and I wish he could have became one of The Doctor’s many companions. While looking up Hugh’s filmography, he was in Star Wars movie which surprised me.
Quite enjoyed myself here.
The Lazarus Experiment - A somewhat forgettable episode. Evil genius becomes a monster and The Doctor has to deal with it. Here we get more time spent with Martha’s family and how they disapprove of Martha hanging out with The Doctor. I can’t really say much as I really disliked the villain both written-wise and bad CGI monster design. He is all kinds of awful. Even his old man makeup early in the episode looked quite bad. The more I think about it, the more I dislike it so I’m moving on quickly.
42 - Here I thought this was going to be a philosophical focused episode. Instead, we get survival horror in a doomed spaceship being pulled by a sentient sun. Mixed feelings all around. The reveal of “the monster” only made me scratch me head in confusion. I did particularly enjoy the many intense moments. However, I cringed at the moments where Martha spoke to her mother over the phone only to build on a plot devise later on in the season. Towards the end, I simply laughed at the self-sacrifice that ends up happening. It felt so dumb to me and completely unnecessary.
Not to sure how to feel about this one. The horror-vibe was good and did a great job building tension, however somewhere along the way, I just wanted the episode to be over with already. Is you have any thoughts about this one episode in particular, I would gladly hear you out.
Doctor Who Impulse Buy Part 6
Made it to the halfway point, might as well keep going.
The Runaway Bride - I absolutely love this episode! From beginning to end, the chemistry between Tennant and Tate is perfect. The humor and drama are blended well along with both actors. If only this dynamic lasted longer than one episode and a season, I would follow Doctor Who to the end of time. Pun definitely intended.
Not only did I enjoy the back and forth between the two leads, the main villain is also fantastic with their over the top acting and design. It is apparent that a whole lot of effort was placed into making her truly unique against many of the other villains of this series. I will definitely watch this again at some point. If I had to rank which were my favorite episodes, this is one that would definitely make it on there.
Smith and Jones - Instead of Donna tagging along the Doctor just yet, we have Martha Jones whose debut is quite good. Unfortunately, Martha doesn’t feel too developed until the end of the episode. I like the premise with the twist and turns of the growing conflict. My only gripe is that it doesn’t stand out as much as Donna’s debut. If I had to compare it to any other episode, I would say it feels a bit similar to Rose’s introduction. Good character introduction rather than any serious conflict.
I will say this though. I’m crushing really hard on Freema. Rose may have entrancing eyebrows but Martha’s overall quality stirs feelings of sexual energy from my overactive imagination. Rose unfortunately didn’t make me wander into that place in my mind.
The Shakespeare Code - The first adventure with Martha and The Doctor has them interacting with William Shakespeare and some actual witches. This is a really fun episode with quite a bit humorous bits, namely Shakespeare crushing on Martha as much as I am. Their interactions were quite delightful. (i also really love the actor they got to portray him as well as the writing.) I particularly like the slow build of character relationship between The Doctor and Martha. Dropping of moments that shows that The Doctor is still pining after Rose while Martha realizes she is simply a rebound girl. Fun episode, not much else to say.
Gridlock - Worst traffic-jam ever. Not a whole lot to say other than Martha getting some solid moments, namely calling out The Doctor’s BS of hiding information and still pining afterf Rose. The major conflict felt slightly unimportant in retrospect, however the last closing moments are really great as The Doctor opens up about his life in more detail to Martha.
One notable thing was when The Doctor started hopping to one vehicle to the next, each person’s car interior reflects on the driver’s personality. It’s solid attention to detail that I really appreciate here. Beyond that, not much else other than a cryptic message that hints at future events and a twist that I was going to go one way ends up going another. A simple solid episode.
Doctor Who Impulse Buy Part 5
As of right now, I finished watching the David Tennant run and watched Matt Smith’s first episode debut. I have some serious catching up to do...
Love & Monsters - I initially liked the premise. An episode that focused on characters that had brief interactions with The Doctor and them meeting is great. Too bad the main villain was terribly annoying and weak. When he introduced himself, the group should have tossed his ass from the beginning.
If I could sum up this episode in two words, it’s “wasted potential”. Killing off more than half the group feels unnecessary (the death count is high enough as it is) and having them be inspired by The Doctor should have been the moment that triumphed the day. Instead, The Doctor saved the day at the end and one of the members gets stuck to a slab of concrete. So dumb of an episode.
Fear Her - Serious Twilight Zone vibes and every actor puts in their all in their performances. Too bad it’s an episode that doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things that after you watch it, you immediately forget this. It definitely has as similar structure to the episode, The Idiot’s Lantern. Now that I think about it, many moments do feel similar.
Not a whole lot to say as it feels like filler rather than progressing any major plot developments.
Army Ghosts/Doomsday - Great build-up, too bad the reasoning of Rose’s departure felt like an after thought. Everything leading to the major conflict felt it was handled well. I genuinely had no idea what was going to happen next. Unfortunately, the randomness caught me off guard when it came to the decision to separate Rose and The Doctor. Their was a moment that was shot well, too bad it was a moment that resulted in me going, “Really? You went with that idea?!”
A lot of great moments, too bad I feel like one undermines the rest.
Doctor Who Impulse Buy Part 4
I was going to cover the next 5 episodes on disc 4 of the set, however, the last one is part of a 2-parter so I might as well cover both at the same time. This just gives me more to say about the season finale when Rose departs. I feel like I should go more in depth about her as well as the Ninth Doctor now that I have been accustomed to the David Tennant iteration.
The Girl In The Fireplace - Mickey joins The Doctor and I have grown to like him quite a bit as he often questions Rose’s and The Doctor’s BS. Unfortunately, he doesn’t shine too much this episode nor does Rose as she is mostly jealous of The Doctor’s interactions with Reinette a.k.a. Madame de Pompadour, a historical figure from France.
As The Doctor continues to interact with Reinette, it’s made apparent she develops genuine affection as she flirts with him out of respect and admiration each time he shows up after the first time. During those moments, the two have chemistry that is clear as the sun in the desert. Unfortunately for The Doctor, his last visit is to learn of her passing and that affects him immensely.
The antagonist this time around are a bit similar to the mannequins that terrorized London in the first episode of this box set. This time around, the mannequins wear creepy masks and are able to move about via a intricate cog system that apparently need to be wound up before they move and attack. A massive improvement from the store displays.
This is a really great episode for The Doctor as it shows how complex his character is regarding his romantic side. He clearly cares deeply for everyone but the end just confirms he can’t really have romance in his life since he will all ways outlive them. Simply a great episode.
Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel - So many great moments with this two-parter. The writing, the acting, the tension, everything about it just nails what the creators were going for. Too bad the design of the Cybermen looks really stupid, in my opinion. I’m sorry but I really don’t take them all that seriously even though they probably have a really high death count like the Daleks. If I ended up being turned, I would go up to The Doctor and ask him if he could redesign my metal body. Might as well embrace the change but make it my own. I think all of the people that got turned and realized what happened died of embarrassment.
Every actor puts in all of their effort to make these such fantastic episodes. Mickey really shines here but unfortunately he decides to stay when the conflict is over. Part of me wishes he stayed traveling with Rose but since she is madly in love with The Doctor, his decision seems justified. Without spoiling any further, I genuinely enjoyed the ups and downs of these episodes.
The Idiot’s Lantern - Believe it or not, this is actually my first episode of Doctor Who I ever watched. Too bad I barely remember it. The only thing I remembered were t.v. sets that are evil and that is about it. It is definitely has been years since I saw this. The reason why I dropped this series the first time is mostly because this is a mediocre episode. Go figure. (The reasoning on how and why I watched this series remains the same. Impulse buy thanks to the Blockbuster Buster’s influence.)
Their really isn’t too many notable moments here. Seeing a bunch of people without a face is creepy, it’s just not focused on too much. The Doctor burning with rage of Rose’s face being blank is the highlight and that’s about it. If you skip this, you really aren’t missing much.
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit - The Doctor and Rose end up on a deep-space expedition on a planet that is orbiting a black hole and face Satan. Well The Doctor does and it’s weird. I liked the horror movie feel and many of the side characters grew on me. It’s just the whole Satan reveal felt silly to me. (It’s CGI.) If you ever watched the movie Event Horizon, this is basically what you get. Just replace hell with Satan.
The build-up was great, too bad the pay off only made me laugh.
Also calling a race the Ood is so incredibly dumb. Couldn’t you have named them something better? It sounds like I’m constantly mishearing someone. At least their mask design looks spectacular and unique to what I’m used to seeing in many sci-fi movies/shows. Oh well. No use complaining about content that was created over a decade ago.
Doctor Who Impulse Buy Part 3
As of right now, I have made it to disc 7 of the box set. I made it to the half way mark. Hooray! Same as usual, I’m doing quick thoughts on each episode.
The Parting of The Ways - I’m conflicted. It was a great way for Eccleston’s departure as The Doctor to face the Daleks, however, the reasoning on how he ended up being forced to regenerate seems kind of confusing to understand. He had to absorb an energy signature that the Tardis uses out of Rose after she pulls a deus ex machina that destroyed the Dalek fleet. Um okay.
The acting is top notch by everyone and I definitely felt the tension rise as more and more humans got killed. Except for the character Jack since he ends up having a series of his own named Torchwood. He did go out heroically, it’s just seems like having him revived feels quite random. John Barrowman is a great actor, I just feel I could have more time spent with him interacting with Rose and The Doctor.
Great build-up of the conflict. Too bad the resolution feels like contrivances that happened than The Doctor using his extensive knowledge to save the day.
The Christmas Invasion - Since The Doctor regenerated, he is out of commission for most of the episode. For the most part, seeing Rose, Mickey, and Jackie figure out their situation without The Doctor makes them quite useless. Rose does the most, just not enough to save the day other than keep The Doctor resting. When Tennant does awaken, he seems to effortlessly save the day making the threat seem really dumb in retrospect.
The one character that did stand out was the actress playing Harriet Jones, the Prime Minister of Britain. She was quite charismatic and level-headed throughout the whole situation. Plus, she does something that makes her quite interesting at the end that makes her challenge The Doctor’s belief in her. Slow at first but picks up when The Doctor finishes his nap.
I will also not find Christmas trees to be all that terrifying in the slightest. That whole attacking spinning tree looked so stupid to me.
New Earth - A antagonist returns and she is still lame as ever. Cassandra, a face stretched out somehow gains the ability to transfer her conscience into other peoples body. Also there are cat people with stellar special effects on their faces and zombies, sort of. People are being given all diseases at once and act like zombies for some reason. Once they touch you, they immediate infect them.
A silly episode that has funny and genuine moments. It also showcases how much effort the show puts in with practical effects. The makeup for the cat people look stunning and makes me appreciate this series even more.
Tooth and Claw - Werewolves hunting Queen Victoria sounds good on paper, ends up being somewhat forgettable in retrospect. The Doctor’s interactions with Queen Victoria are quite good, it’s just muddled with bland characters and an antagonist who I think I was supposed to feel sorry for. (shrugs)
There were monks that took over the estate that I thought were going be more problematic as they did bring a werewolf to attack Queen Victoria. I’m just not sure where they disappeared to once the werewolf ended up defeated. If this was addressed, I must have missed it.
A bad CGI werewolf and that setting up the spin-off series Torchwood was all this episode was about.
School Reunion - Really great episode, just not sure about a villain that eats children. Don’t get me wrong, Anthony Head is phenomenal here, it’s just having his introduction kill a child seems in poor taste to me.
Here we are introduced to an old companion of The Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith who is quite familiar with his antics. (And a robot dog for some reason. This show can be weird sometimes.) Sarah and The Doctor have instant chemistry and seeing those two interacting is delightful. We also see Mickey have a more involved role as he helps out however he can by being a hacker. I wish he was more involved in the series and what I have seen of him so far, they did him good.
If you can get over the whole child being eaten moment, this is definitely one of the best episodes as Anthony Head and David Tennant act off each other quite well. Plus seeing someone who is familiar with The Doctor’s antics give advice to Rose is a nice moment. I kind of wish Sarah Jane appeared more with the Tenth Doctor. Just not the robot dog. It seems really dumb to look at. Rush it is not.
Phew, only 9 more discs to go...
