a paper dog, everyone. I bought a pack of black origami paper to make a votive dog for sacrifice for a Hecate’s Deipnon festival we may or may not be doing later this month. There are origami tutorials on youtube and paper dogs make fine offerings.

I love that hellenics are over here working out ideas for sacrifices that we can all use!  I’m glad we can all share and uplift each other.

I just use a dog cookie cutter and black clay.  I roll it about 2/3 centimeters thin, cut out three or four dog shapes: two for either end, and one or two for the middle.  Then I take the one or two (depending on the thickness you want) that go in the middle, cut a rectangular hole in the middle of the dog, and pile both ‘middles’ on top of one end.  This creates a dog-shape with a square recess in the center!  Fill the recess with syrup, glitter, m&ms, or whatever red substance you think is appropriate, then put the other ‘end’ piece (with no hole in the belly) on top!  If you used stuff that doesn’t melt, you can even bake it!  You can do this with cookies too, to create a biodegradable offering!  You can smash it, stab it, or whatever else  you want to do to ‘sacrifice’ it, and in my experience it will perform admirably, but be prepared for a realistic mess.

Yeah!!! By the way, if you’re making paper animals for sacrifice, some melted wax brushed on the inside seams with a crappy old paintbrush will yield a slightly longer and much more dramatic burn time.
