After reading lots of posts about orihimes ‘downfall’ if you want to call it that way… I’m really sad about all the hate she gets from so many people. It is true that she was poorly written in the second half of the arrancar arc… But even then in the manga it is not that bad - yes I mean her ‘Kurosaki-kun’ and that she needed to be saved by ichigo during the fight with ulquiorra. But in the end this is ichigos story and he needed this to get stronger. Being a plot device isn’t that great either… But being a hime fan after so many years and knwoing a lot about her and her past and ambitions… it makes me still sad. Kubo didn’t do a good job with her character arc in the later episodes, yes, but she had her moments. I am one of the few people who is happy for her and for ichigo beeing happy in the end of bleach. The whole argue about ichihime and ichiruki looked always off to me… Since rukia is a shinigami located in soul society while ichigo has his human life in his world ( and is apparently not dead) i never saw a romantic relationship in their friendship. Even the argument that rukias child was named after ichigo is wrong… Since she named her daughter after orihimes wedding gift - a symbol of rukias and orihimes friendship. Well… Enough about this. This were just a few thoughts about this.

I mean, sorry to burst your bubble and all but she was just an aweful character and Ichigo didn’t need her for growth at all. It was Zangetsu that saved Ichigo on the roof of Las Noches, not Inoue. (sorry not sorry >.<)

Okay, I love IchiRuki, its one of the greatest OTP’s of all time but the one thing I never undersootd about the iR fandom was the facination we seem to have with making Ichigo the Vice-Captain of Rukia.

I get that its cute or whatever but isnt that just a huge insult to the guy? Like hey, your argubaly the strogest person alive in our universe with a charisma so strong that you can make allies out of even the worst enemies and then more so you have the leadership skills to lead them loyaly through battle but even knowing all of that were going to make you a Lieutenant...

Yeah... see like that just doesn’t really make sense to me. Am I alone here in thinking that’s kinda insulting to him?

What I love the most about IchiRuki is that Ichigo and Rukia were both so sad before they met, depressed and filled with guilt, they couldn’t even be themselves. And then they met, and they changed each other’s worlds for the better, and they found a kindred spirit in the other, and, guys, after this, they weren’t alone anymore, because they finally found where they belong through their meeting…

Looking back on all the Discourse™ this past year about the IchiRuki fandom losing because the ship wasn’t made canon, I can confidently say we didn’t lose anything.

Canonization is an author’s choice, not a contest among fandoms, and it took seeing IchiRuki not become canon to really see that. Being canon and having the author acknowledge your hopes for a ship feels incredible, but in the grand scheme of things, the author not doing so doesn’t make your feelings for the characters and ships you enjoy any less valid.

Nothing changed when Bleach ended last year, nothing really drastic happened. Kubo didn’t take their relationship to a romantic realm, and he attempted to pass the torch onto their children, but chapter 686 didn’t change anything really. Ichigo and Rukia remain the ruling feature of Bleach, their relationship is still the driving force of the story, they are still the Death and the Strawberry.

I still love these two characters, I love their interactions and dynamics, I love the IchiRuki fandom, even more so now than I did a year ago because I turned my bitterness over not seeing the author portray them as a couple into creativity as to how I myself see them together, and that’s what fandom is all about.

Taking this idea presented to you and running away with it, seeing how far it can go, exploring possibilities that don’t come up in canon. This growing ideal that fandom must adhere to what’s canon is incredibly stifling and it’s really showing in the disparity between the canon and not-canon Bleach ships’ fandom activity and creative content output.

Just in myself I’ve experienced a dazzling blossom of motivation. My IchiRuki edits are known across social media platforms and I’ve generated a name for myself just from evolving the ways in which I fit these two perfect pieces together over and over again. This past month I’ve been making content almost every single day after months spent avoiding my computer and desk chair due to my sciatica. Mind I do take frequent breaks, but I always come back energized and excited and anxious to finish an edit and share it with my fandom.

I’m proud to be part of this fandom, that took just a moment to nurse its wounds and stood right back up and just kept going, a true embodiment of Ichigo and Rukia themselves, walking forward with poise and confidence.

We didn’t become canon.

We became something better.
