Last monday i was invited to a friend (other than local guitar legend)'s b-day. Should be fun, right? Esp since there was also this other common friend who happens to be a semi-legend of activism (at least, he used to be before becoming a narcissist alcoholic out of touch with reality).
Sure, we drank a lot. Location was the same bar of one of the most unusual gigs i remember: a chinese bar hosting an Oi! concert.
So why was it a barely mediocre night? 'Cause ofc nothing special happened, on the contrary it was nearly a disaster, morally speaking.
Just outside the bar, at 3 am cops came and checked our IDs. Everything was actually smooth and chill. Mostly 'cause we acted innocent and indifferent. Esp me, the trickster #1. I was the one deceiving them, i was the one in control, right? But i can't tell if i was really winning or losing.
One of the other guys with us was a Uni mate i had an exam with on my first semester: he's also a Moroccan activist who got hit badly by police back in 2024, got 3 broken ribs during a Uni protest, and despite videos and trials it was like nothing ever happened. No justice.
Ironically enough, one of the cops was another former Uni mate who left to become a policeman, after he notoriously held right-wing and racist beliefs. Rumors are that he (like every other cop) got a manual on how to lie to press and lawyers. He was chill with us, we were chill with him, but it was just a performance after all. Being cool was the only way to avoid an escalation. Being double-faced was a necessity, survival in a war we couldn't win and that's bigger than us.
Me, my activist friend and the activist guy talked for a while after cops left. While my friend was, as i said, out of touch with reality and too idealist as usual, the other guy seemed more down-to-earth, rational and disillusioned like me. He agreed on a lot of things i said, but that's kinda sad. It means that we both see no way out of this, no solution, no hope. He also agreed that nothing can change because of ordinary ppl, starting from majority of fellow students who are ok with the current state.
In the end, our awareness has to face a dead end. We're just a bunch of powerless, hopeless losers. Nothing happened that night, and nothing is ever happening anytime soon. We know that. Best we can do is keep a low profile, survive day by day, hoping things don't get worse and we don't make even a tiny mistake meanwhile.
At 5 am, while driving back home, i kept thinking of what happened. Everything was fine 'cause we had no other choice but comply. Being a trickster felt like a necessity to avoid troubles, not a way to turn things into my favor. And i'm not sure this will still be enough one day.
