okay, I’m awake - and ready to do some writing on my girl. feel free to like this and we can discuss plots together. <3
❝ you were never one for talking -- but can you put my mind at ease, just this once? ❞ the high elf was not hopeful for a response, though nonetheless she wished for one. regret was not a feeling she longed to hold on to; to not take the opportunity to at least attempt closure with her sister would be near-sinful on her part. closure, she mused to herself quietly. what a charming thought for them all.
❝ Sylvanas-- I just want you to know that it was never my intent to hurt you as I believe I have done. I-- ❞ what was she to say? she could not see the other’s face before her; could not peer into her thoughts; could not speak as she did. their eldest sister waited for her, but Vereesa could not bare to leave the other’s side a second time -- not without explanation.
❝ if there’s anything I can do... I want to at least ensure you know that. ❞

TEMPERANCE ! TEMPERANCE , THE YOUNG KING TELLS HIMSELF , BUT such persistence avails him nothing ; in the aftermath of war , as anduin well knows , the fires of anger are not so easily extinguished . he calls upon the light , nearly begging for his heart to steady , and within a few breaths he is once again BENT before the passing wind ( anger passes , just like the wind does , and thus he is unbroken . ) ❛ I don’t want to change . ❜ is it weakness to make such a confession ? perhaps in greymane’s eyes it would be , no doubt , but it isn’t the worgen anduin speaks to .
❛ BUT SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE I’LL HAVE TO —– and I fear I wouldn’t like the person I’d become . ❜
@VEREESAW !
he was still a boy in the eyes of so many, of that Vereesa was almost certain. a boy who had lost his parents at far too young an age; one who was now made to take up a mantle that should not have been his to yet bare. it struck a familiarity within the youngest Windrunner; she saw herself in him as much as she saw her boys. already she could see his internal conflicts etch across his face; burn away at his thoughts and echo out through his words. she felt a pity for him; a sorrow. internally, she grieved for his losses and allowed his thoughts to rest with her -- silently -- for a moment. despite his sorrow ( and despite her grief ), she offered him a smile as her initial response. temptation struck her to reach a hand out to him, though she refrained and opted only for words.
❝ it can be difficult not to stray from your path. beliefs and ideals are often tested -- and yours especially -- and I cannot say that the temptation will not sway you. change you, though? I do not believe it capable of doing so. ❞ whenever she looked upon him she always recalled that moment. he did nothing, yet instilled within her such a moving force that what could have ended in what she would now call disaster instead became... a grief, yes, but temperance as well; another perspective that she had been blind to, were it not for his intervention.
❝ you have within you the power to instil hope in others, just through being who you are. I cannot tell you that it will be easy, or that you won’t be met with resistance and difficulty -- both from your enemies and your allies. what I can tell you with certainty, however, is that when all else is gone, you only have your own self left -- and the choices you made. stay true to that; to who you are, as opposed to who people want you to be. change is welcome -- and will happen -- but it does not have to be at the expense of your character. ❞
just because I discussed this in ims: though the high elf and blood elves both are able to use the Sunwell now (and they’ve been able to for years), Vereesa does not. she’s not welcome there... and she has another coping method:
"Having suffered from her own magical withdrawal, Vereesa reflected that she too may have joined them, had it not been for Rhonin's support which helped her to recuperate. After the birth of her sons, her love for her children was enough to distract her from the pangs of addiction and loss."
paired with the fact that high elves are able to forego their magical addiction in the first place (as stated: “ Such a low rate of attrition might be considered an argument in favor of simply forgoing magic and suffering through the consequences. Indeed, a few high elves are said to have succeeded in taking this route through sheer willpower: they survived the process, however unpleasant.”), it’s not past me to take this as Vereesa’s choice.
in my head this is amusing because she is literally an elf running on spite and sheer power of will, and I support her fully for that.
truthfully, she was still unsure about... well-- this; about her sister’s being here ( it had been so very long... ) and about what kind of forces were now at work within her. the youngest Windrunner struggled to see the bad in Sylvanas; for her to now contemplate ‘pon the idea of seeing the same in Alleria, too... she could only trust in her sister’s word that she had it under her control.
it still gave pause to the high elf, however, when she stood before the rift that had been left open for her. in hindsight, perhaps she should have offered for the other to come to Dalaran instead. perhaps she’d have regretted it, too, had a familiar face not been standing to greet her the very moment she reached the other side of that tear.
❝ I hope you don’t plan to make a home of this place, sister... at least, not a permanent one. Lady Sun would become a rather defunct nickname if it was so. ❞ though her lips curved into a smile, there was truth to her statement. she had only experienced a place like this a handful of times; to say it was discomforting would be putting it lightly.

"Vereesssa.." The Time Lord examined her from the reflection in the hourglass. "If I could've only.. Sssaved him."
The words pained her to hear, even as echoes. She knew he was not there, but she could feel the Timeless One’s presence near to her in that moment. No, she thought to herself, I mustn’t break down again… not now… yet it was so hard to hold on, even long after the event had come to pass. The wound was still so fresh; the guilt still so strong. But how could she put Him to blame?
“I understand.” She whispered quietly, even though she did not. Why could he not save them? Why could he not turn back time? Was this supposed to happen? Had fate doomed the youngest of the three sisters to forever feel the turmoil of death, without it ever embracing her own self? Her sisters had the luxury of being able to abandon their lineage and pursue their own goals. Vereesa, however, was always left to pick up the pieces – and how they had cracked so fine that with each and every attempt she would cut herself more and more and more…
“Protect them.” It would be her only request to the Aspect; to the flight, even. He had promised her boys their friendship; Vereesa would forever owe a debt to any who sought to cater to her family. Their lives were so young and hers so long; perhaps the web of time had already woven its course for her, but there was hope for her boys. They could be saved from this torment that she continued to bear; she would do anything to ensure that it would come to pass.
“Time can be such a cruel thing… even for you, it seems. I hold onto hope that my boys will not suffer from its grasp.”

Isn't Vereesa the current leader of the High Elves?
Actually – no. There’s nothing to suggest that she is the leader of the High Elves. However, she is a leader; self-proclaimed, albeit; not official by any means.
You have to keep in mind that the High Elves are mistrusted by near enough every race now, including their former kin (not that they care; there is equal amounts of mistrust on both sides). The High Elves are pariahs; they are a scattered people who have merely sought a welcoming place. Blizzard did this intentionally because it is known that they treated the Half Elves (and most other races, for that matter) with a similar disdain, and this fall from grace is somewhat of a humbling for the remnants of the race – except to near calamitous affect.
If we are going for technicalities, the current leader of the High Elves is Varian. Most have allied themselves with the Alliance – it is what they know, and they do not want to change, but note that for the vast majority of them it is an alliance of necessity; a lot want to break free and make their own homeland, but the population just is not great enough to do so and they will fail without support.
Currently, the High Elves rely on the hospitality of the humans. If they didn’t have that hospitality, they would have been completely eradicated. You will often find High Elves in human-populated areas; most notably Dalaran due to its magical properties – and Vereesa is obviously not far behind them, for she followed Rhonin to the same place.
One could argue that Vereesa is the leader if all High Elves were members of the Silver Covenant, though this is unclear. You have to bare in mind that, though the Windrunners were powerful, they were not royalty – and the High Elves were very much so used to royalty. As a result, Varian is the best alternative to them because, whilst not elven, he is royalty – Vereesa is not; she is just a (self-appointed) general. I think even if she did try to rally the troops, so to speak, she would fail on account of her own blood.
TL;DR – the humans will lead the High Elves from now on. Their true leader died when Anasterian died and they will not have another due to their numbers and their lack of a stronghold. They are at the whim of the humans, who are currently the only named race that accept them – the rest are distrusting and, as a result, the High Elves are pariahs. Vereesa is simply a self-appointed ranger general to a cause she feels will give her people a little pride in an otherwise prideless situation; their pride being in the fact that they turned away from what they thought was wrong, which is pretty much all a High Elf has to stand on now.
I should also add in post script that I assume all High Elves belong to the Alliance because it is openly stated that they did not “rejoin” the Alliance, because to them they never left to begin with. High Elves are Alliance by default and only if openly stated that they are not are they then considered neutral. Again, though, I explore that this can be seen as an alliance of convenience more so than trust -- it is the case for some, but not all. Take it with a pinch of salt.

What do you miss most about Rhonin?
The words came as a shock; akin to a knife cutting through the chest. Her heart filled with remorse at the mere thought of her having to say she missed him now -- she had grown so used to his presence... though the question did pique her interest.
“Rhonin was not perfect -- of this he often did remind me. He spoke of himself in ways you often speak of yourself: reckless; hot-headed; flawed -- and perhaps he was correct in those descriptions.” She did not even give herself that satisfaction; she knew he had been correct, for it was what drove her insane the first time they met. They did not match, originally; they fought and argued and ripped each other apart in ways that many saw as a complete and utter hatred, and yet...
“--...but I grew to love him for those reasons. His flaws were not so in my eyes; his passion and drive to do what he felt right, even if dangerous, was admirable. All of these made him a respectable comrade but his care is what caught me in the end; his success is what had me stand by his side in support, where many said he should not have received such. He was a kind man; a hopeful man...” Though perhaps too long of an answer, she simply shook her head in defiance; as the two of them always had done.
“I cannot answer what I miss the most when there is only one thing to miss -- I miss him. All of him. There was not one thing I preferred over the other -- not once.”
anierous
He blinked as he heard the woman’s voice. Without turning to look, he merely answered in a calm tone, “Those wards fade. They require replenishing, from time to time. This little token is the least I can do for the Windrunners.”
Hm, the least indeed...
“How very noble of you.” Perhaps there was a snark there that did not mean to intrude; she had wished to keep peace in this area. “I am certain the rest of our kin would appreciate that kind of protection -- do you offer them the same token?”
