She was born and raised in Fallbrook, North Carolina to Mary and Dustin Phan. For the longest time, they could not seem to conceive. It was hard on them, though they didn’t show it when even their best friends from the Song family, had children before they did. Yet, it never made them treat Avery any differently.  

Eventually, they were with child, putting Veronica Phan to be roughly ten years younger than Avery and fortunately, only three years younger than their other daughter, Annabelle, though they never did click the same way as Veronica did with Avery. For as long as Veronica could remember, the members of the Song. family were people that she considered family. Though they weren’t related by blood, Avery and Annabelle were her sisters.

And it was lucky for such a close connection, because when she was five years old, Veronica lost her parents. It was a tragic car accident that took the life of her parents, leaving her without family. She had no siblings and no aunts or uncles to look after it. It was when the Song family took her in legally. Months were spent in the foster system, but eventually, once all the legal paperwork was sorted out, Veronica Phan became Veronica Phan-Song. Her time in foster care was much quicker due to the preparedness her parent’s had gone through, making sure their daughter would be taken care of due to their slightly older age when they had children.

Veronica came out relatively unscathed for a young girl that lost her parents, mostly due to the support system she had being raised by the Song family. It was one that she couldn’t be more grateful for, always going the extra mile when she could. Though they were twelve years apart, Veronica had always taken to Avery more than she did Annabelle. It must have been their mutual love for animals. It didn’t take Veronica long to start mimicking Avery and her rescuing of animals, though they weren’t always birds in the street and more turtles on the beach. Veronica had an affinity that drew her to the ocean.

From a young age, she had always been decisive. She quickly outgrew being called Veronica, feeling that it wasn’t all that fitting for her and preferring to go by Ronnie. She became quite passionate about the environment and began making posters for rallies at a young age. They were always wildly decorated, perhaps the most sparkly one in the crowd. She also took after her mother and often volunteered at local shelters when she had the chance.

High school was pretty normal for her. One could call her a nerd, as she loved to have her face buried in a book, but she was also sociable. She didn’t have many friends but the ones that she did have were incredibly close to her. New students always came by Ronnie, as she was an ambassador for getting new kids acclimated to Fallbrook and its surroundings. In addition, Ronnie began interning at the Echo Bay Aquarium her senior year, really solidifying her love for the ocean and saving it. It was the defining difference in her path to follow Avery as she went to Florida to get her degree in Marine Biology.

In college, Ronnie was faced with friends that were not good people. She thought they were her friends, but it turned out that they were not. Believing that people were good, Ronnie took her friend’s word when she asked her to get something from another dorm room. Come to find out, Ronnie was caught for stealing. With this being her first offense and having a perfect record, the officer on duty offered to let her go without a scratch on her record, if she had drinks with him. The drink turned to dinner and dinner turned to more until Ronnie graduated. It was roughly six months that the officer blackmailed her.

On the day that she moved back to Fallbrook, Ronnie turned him in and high tailed it out of Florida and back to North Carolina where she began living with Waverly Erickson. Fresh out of college, her funds her limited but she wanted to show her parents that she was self sufficient and she was still recovering from the blackmail and knew they’d see right through her. Since her return to Fallbrook, one year ago, she has been working at the Echo Bay Aquarium. For the last year, she has also put together many beach clean ups, teaches diving classes that start out at the aquarium and rekindled friendships from the few years she was gone for college.

Jamey noticed how flustered Ronnie became and wondered if that was due to the date. He suddenly felt that pang of jealousy take over again. However, his facial expressions kept that goofy grin. It just dimmed very slightly. When she finally admitted it was just okay, Jamey felt some relief. “Oh? Just okay?” He repeated her words. Jamey’s eyes moved to the door where Mark had disappeared once again. The male’s gaze came back to Ronnie’s face. “Well, I could have saved ya some time if ya would have told me about the date. Mark’s a dick.” Jamey muttered and shrugged a little. He had a long shift at work and really wanted to smoke. “My night was long, busy y’know. Got some good tips though.”

“Yeah, I mean, I don’t think it was anything special,” she admitted to him, lifting her shoulders in a small shrug. His words caught her attention as he muttered, Ronnie thinned her lips as she looked up at Jamey, trying to read him. This wasn’t the first time he had said this about someone she went on a date with. “Is everyone I go on a date with a dick?” A word she wouldn’t typically use felt foreign on her lips, but she found herself growing frustrated with Jamey at the remark. “Is that just the kind of guy I attract?” The furrowing of her brows had her crossing her arms over her chest. “I’m glad you got good tips, though,” her features softened momentarily, not wishing any ill tips on the man that was her best friend.

Shelby relaxed at Ronnie’s words. She never wanted the other to feel like she genuinely disliked her. Ronnie could be a lot, but so could she. It hurt her when people wrote Ronnie off before getting to know her.“Don’t aww me. You know I hate mushy stuff. Do not expect this to be a normal thing.” Shelby cringed, giving Ronnie a little side hug before stepping back. She hadn’t ever been good with emotions. “I don’t think I ever even agreed to being your partner. You sat down next me.” Shelby was really glad Ronnie had claimed her and taken that step. She’d been one of the only loyal girl friends she’d ever had despite Shelby being Oscar the grouch and Ronnie was galinda the good. “Not usually, but I’m in a good mood today.” She teased. “I’ve seen you look at it.” She’d honestly do anything to make her friend smile. “Let’s get me that drink, and you a kiddy slush.. get me loosened up and I’ll win it for you.” She promised, walking up to the drink stand. “Dive class, huh? Maybe I should join?” At the mention of a new hire Shelby nodded. “We should invite her it with us sometime.” She shrugged. “My brothers still missing. My moms a wreck. I don’t know what to do.”

“I would never expect such a thing,” had it been about ten years ago, maybe. Ronnie had a habit of thinking that everyone enjoyed being as mushy and soft as she was, but the older she got, the more she realized that they didn’t. It didn’t stop her from being herself. If someone didn’t like her, well, Ronnie did her best to come to terms with that. She wasn’t as tough as others, letting the bad roll off her shoulders. Ronnie smiled at Shelby’s side hug - a step in the right direction. “It was a silent agreement,” she teased her friend right back, thinking back to the moment with a proud smile on her face. “Hey, I’m old enough for it to have alcohol,” she laughed, knowing Shelby was giving her a hard time again. “I just like the fact that it is slushy,” and the warm weather put her in the mood for a drink like that. “I wouldn’t say no to that,” she nodded her head, “I thought about that too. She seems really nice,” though she hadn’t talked with her too much yet. “Wait, what?” Ronnie hadn’t heard that news through the Fallbrook grape vine. “Hal is missing?” She shook her head, her hands coming up to her chest as she clasped them together, “He’s going to be okay.” Ronnie said with a single nod of her head. “I am here to offer a listening ear or distractions, whatever you need.” She reached out to squeeze the woman’s shoulder a moment, knowing Shelby wasn’t big into affection.

Shelby often gave her a hard time, but she’d never internally wanted to hurt her friend. “Good. I wouldn’t want to bruise your cute little nose.” She grinned. “At least we know your reflexes are good. That’s promising.” She nodded, helping Ronnie get into position. “Scouts honor. We can try that new boba tea place down town.” She assumed Ronnie would be into that. It had her vibes all over it. “Sweet. We should check out the cherry blossom festival. I hear it’s opening up this weekend. Wanna be my hot date?” She’d been out as gay for years and would often joke with Ronnie about being her girlfriend but was never really hitting on her. “Okay, here we go, give it your all.” She nodded to the ball.

Ronnie didn’t think that she would be better at serving but if anyone had her back in the sports department, it would be Shelby. “No, that wouldn’t be a good look on me,” the brunette wrinkled her nose in thought of having it bruised by a ball, though she imagined it would have ended up more in line with being broken more than bruised. “It’s a good start, isn’t it?” Or rather, she hoped that it was. “You know the way to my heart,” with work being so busy, Ronnie hadn’t been able to try the new place just yet. “I’ll always be your hot date, so long as you get your face painted with me.” She teased the other wit ha grin on her face. She knew that it was going to be a hard sell, but it was at least worth a shot. Being handed the ball, Ronnie looked at it. She had seen Shelby do this quite a few times. Ronnie rested the ball on her hand before swinging her fist toward it, missing the ball entirely. “Yikes,” she grimaced, “looks like I’ll need a lot of practice before we get boba.”

She smiled at her. “Well, I’ll definitely get him on making you some décor for your room and office.” Franny said as she looked over some pieces. She loved how close Ronnie was with her son and she knew Sammy appreciated going up to the aquarium and seeing things. “He’ll love that. We’ll plan something. I think after all this he’s going to follow in your footsteps other than mine or Antonio’s.”

“I would love that one hundred and ten percent times a million,” Ronnie exaggerated the number but it was still genuine in her heart. As someone that adored the woman’s son, she absolutely meant it. “I would love to plan that, I love it just as much as he does,” it was no surprise to anyone that she followed partly in Avery’s footsteps in the animal field. “you think so?” Her eyes grew wide with excitement, “not that I can blame him, animals are the perfectness the world always needed.”

She smiled at her and nodded to her question. “Yeah, I’d love to. If you don’t mind, of course.” Chandler didn’t want to make the other feel uncomfortable, but she definitely wanted to help. “Not at all, I’d welcome the help,” Veronica grinned at the other woman. If anything, she welcomed it more than she was able to admit. When it came to cleaning up the beach, there were not people lining up to do so, even when Ronnie tried to make it fun. “It’s nice to meet you too, Chandler. This will sound creepy but you’ve probably heard it a dozen times again,” she started, “but you don’t look like you are from around here. At least not in the last year I’ve been back in town.”

Ronnie had been running errands, having dropped off a few things at the local thrift store downtown before deciding where to go eat for lunch. She walked along downtown Fallbrook, her eyes wandering along the building sides as she hoped a restaurant would stick out to her. As she walked, she spotted a familiar face. “Oh! Jack!” Ronnie called out, lifting her hand in an excited wave. She leaned up on her toes, hoping to catch his attention with a large smile on her face.

Jamey’s eyes trailed to the door where Mark had entered, leaving Ronnie on the street alone. At night. Not that she couldn’t take care of herself, but the idea caused Jamey to furrow his brows together in a flash of anger. As quick as it appeared, he transformed his face into the signature grin he carried before looking back to his friend. “Oh, Mark, huh?” It was all he could think to say. Admittedly, the male had just finished a long shift of waiting tables and desperately wanted a joint to relax. “Well, how did that go?” Jamey asked, not really wanting to know but figuring it was better to ask. It was the friendly thing to do, right?

“Yeah, it, uh,” Ronnie felt flustered with herself for trying to explain the date to Jamey when she knew she was only in love with him but in her head. She had never told him how she felt. “it was an okay date.” She shrugged her shoulders at his question, “Obviously doesn’t seem to be going anywhere else,” Mark had left her to her own devices, not even bothering to walk her to her car at the end of the night after she drove from her rented place in Rosewood Hills. “But, uh, how was your night?” She quickly tried to change the subject.

Verity heaved a small sigh, before she chuckled. “Well, not great considering you asking me that question has just reminded me I need to practice some more before I decide to venture back into the ocean.” She had said with a small shake of her head. She had just been busy with work and finishing up college. “He is pretty great! I have learned a lot from him.” Verity nodded back at her. “But hey, I might be showing up for one of those diving lessons before you know it.” She winked teasingly back at Ronnie before she leaned herself forward a bit and emitted a small sigh. “I am, but I am also glad it is almost over.” She said. “Then I just need to get my clinical experience before I can start attempting to save marriages around here, unless I decide to move back to New York.”

Ronnie’s brows lifted and her eyes grew wide as she realized what she had done, “Oh, no I’m so sorry,” she hadn’t meant to remind the woman that she needed to practice more, hoping that she didn’t take any offense to it. “That’s great,” Ronnie’s features softened as the other spoke of Noah. “You absolutely should,” her smile grew wider at the thought, “I would love to have you there and I think you would really enjoy it.” She told Verity, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. “How long do you have to do clinical experience for?” Ronnie didn’t know much about it, curious about the woman’s future. “Oh, really? You’d move back to New York?” The thought tugged on her heartstrings, “I bet there are a lot more marriages to save there, though.”

She’d fight anyone who was rude to Ronnie. “You know I mean that, right? I know I give you a hard time but I never meant it. You’re a great friend.” She smiled at the smaller woman. “Ah. So, given you can’t throw for crap, You want me to win you that giant stuffed panda ebony been showing off.” She laughed and started walking. “Let’s do it. We can try that place with the night bloom drink.” She knew Ronnie loved sweet things. “How’s work been treating you?”

“Sure do,” Ronnie grinned at the other. Her own sunshine personality was not always the easiest to accept, hence the eye roll coming from her friend. “That they would,” she took it in stride with a smile, knowing that for the most part, Shelby was giving her a hard time. She had been this way for as long as Ronnie had known her and well, it had grown on her as well. As Shelby said that she actually meant it, a slow smile crossed her lips. “Awh, Shelby,” she turned to her friend, “I’m so glad we were partners in class all those years ago.” It was an unexpected friendship but one that the brunette cherished. “You would do that for me?” Ronnie clasped her hands together in thought, “that panda would be amazing,” she could already picture it in her room now. “That did sound really good,” she was happy to go wherever Shelby would lead, as she didn’t dabble much in the world of alcohol. “Work has been amazing as always. I start up my dive class trainings again in the next few weeks.” She told Shelby, “And a few weeks ago we had a new hire, her name is Alicia, and she’s great too.”

Jamey couldn’t help but shrug along with Ronnie as she spoke. “It is a shame, but fuck them people. I’ll get whatever I want on my face.” He noticed the redness on her cheeks and knew she had heard his compliment. Since she didn’t speak on it, Jamey figured it was best he let it go as well. Despite having romantic feelings for Ronnie, Jamey has never spoke those feelings aloud to anyone. “Let’s do the cola toss first then!” He told her with yet another grin coming onto his face. He had played beer pong his whole life so tossing the rings onto the empty bottles was something Jamey was pretty good at.

“That’s right,” she nodded her head along with his words. The woman didn’t tend to use vulgarities, but she fully agreed with Jamey in this moment. The people that had something to say about what face paint they wore were the people that she didn’t want to be associated with. “Cola toss it is,” she grinned at him, “I am not very good at this one so I might need some pointers, or at least take it easy on me.” She teased Jamey as she guided them in the direction of the game. “Oh look, no line!” Veronica nearly skipped as she saw the gaming booth.

 “I am not sure..” The blonde stated while eyeing the bullseye on the tank. “I played a little soft ball in school, but it had been a while since I threw a ball.” The blonde giggled and looked over at her friend. “Oh honey, please!” She said, placing her hand reassuringly onto her arm “I would never laugh at you. “You are too sweet,” she smiled at Willow. When it came to sports, Veronica was as uncoordinated as they come. Just the other day, she had nearly been knocked out by an incoming volleyball. It was by no fault of her own, but she had always been more studious than sports oriented. “We can be not so good together,” she smiled at Willow, not wanting to say outright that they were bad because she couldn’t do that. “I can’t believe you still have those!” Ronnie grinned at her friend, “Not that I don’t either, if I’m being honest,” the brunette was huge collector of memories, even going as far as scrapbooking them. “We can definitely add some more to the collection.”

“Why did I let you talk me into this?” Shelby squirmed against the artist working on her face. Even as a kid she hated getting any kind of face paint or temporary tattoos. She knew Ronnie meant well, she was trying to distract her from her bitters sudden disappearance. She was relived to be out of the house for s minute. She’d spent the last week consoling her mom. “If I’m going to walk around looking this silly I’m going to need a drink.” She sighed, holding her hand up in a firm no when the lady offered her glitter to complete the look. “Where to next, Ron Ron?”

Ronnie knew that this was Shelby’s least favorite part of the day, but she had agreed to do it and the brunette was going to make sure she stuck to her word. “Because you are sweet enough to spend time with me,” it wasn’t the most legitimate answer but Ronnie smiled at the other anyway. “We can get a drink.” Ronnie didn’t drink a ton but she often entertained a drink or two when the occasion called for it, especially if it was a super fruity, non-alcoholic tasting drink. “Well, next off we can get you that drink and me one too,” she told Shelby, “then I was thinking maybe we can go try to win some of those impossible prizes.”

Penelope had just arrived to the festival and had about an hour to kill before she had to report for the booth she was assigned to. The people of Fallbrook seemed to all be there and as she tried to spot someone she knew, before retreating to a bench or something, Penny smiled at the sight of a familiar face. “Hey!” she called out and took a few steps to catch her, “Don’t you look pretty in pink,” she grinned when she reached Veronica

Veronica had been wandering around Fallbrook’s finest Cherry Blossom Festival for a while now, heading in no particular direction when she spotted a familiar face. It seemed that they both had the same idea as they approached one another. “Oh, why thank you,” Ronnie’s cheeks flushed red as she accepted Penelope’s compliment. “I thought it was very fitting for the theme of the festival,” her hand smoothed over her dress, “I absolutely adore your white dress. I don’t think I could ever pull off something like that.” It suited the other beautifully.

Jamey pretended like he was really trying to think of their years together at the festival. “Ummmm, I don’t know, Ron, since we were kids.” He answered in a joking tone. In truth, they’d been coming to the festival together every since they met in elementary school. Jamey frowned at the thought of the same rude woman being at the face paint booth. “I really hope it ain’t her again. Who said a grown ass man can’t have a butterfly on his cheek?” He wondered with another grin coming over his face. Jamey looked over Ronnie’s petite face and lifted his hand to his chin like an artist visualizing their work on a canvas. “Yeah, girl, some tiger stripes would look dope on your cute little face.” He answered honestly before realizing he had called her cute. “Anyways, what are we doing first, Ron?” He quickly asked, trying to brush over the comment he made.

Ronnie shook her head at his joking tone. It didn’t surprise her anymore when Jamey gave her a hard time. It had been part of their friendship for as long as she could remember. “No one said,” she said, “but it has probably offended someone at some point and well,” Ronnie raised her shoulders in a shrug, “it is a shame when people are so offended by something that doesn’t really do anything to them in the first place.” If Jamey wanted a butterfly on his cheek, it wasn’t going to hurt anyone. “Tiger stripes it is,” Ronnie knew her cheeks were flushing red, though she hoped she’d be able to play it off quickly. “I’m thinking we check out some games first,” she looked down at her phone as she pulled it out of her pocket, “I don’t think face painting opens for another half hour.”

Jamey formed another goofy grin across his face. It was almost like a signature look for the male. “I definitely was, and I love how you didn’t even bother to ask me to help y’all plant that tree cause you know I’d be snoozin’.” He stated. The pair knew more about each other than most did. That was why when he caught her on a date with Mark the other day, it did upset Jamey a bit. Partly cause Ronnie never said a word about it, but mostly due to Jamey’s secret feelings for her. When she reached up to poke his cheek, Jamey almost stopped breathing at the movement. He quickly composed himself and nodded in agreement, grin still intact on his face. “I think I will look handsome with it. And if that lady don’t do it this year, I’ma need you to grab the paintbrush and paint me a damn butterfly.” That’s what besties were for, right?

“That’s right, how many years have we been doing this?” She teased him right back, knowing that she could have tried to make Jamey get up but it would have been more effort than planting the cherry blossom trees. “That’s right. Jamey made a pretend bored face at Ronnie’s comment and glanced around the festival. “I guess so, Ron. Shit, it looks like a bunch of Easter colored shit and booths.” He teased. Hearing about her and Verity planting trees, Jamey raised an eyebrow at their early morning activities. “Oh, yeah? I was sawin’ some logs this morning.” He joked, meaning he was sleeping like a baby. Jamey allowed her excitement to grew and kept thinking of adorable she was whilst listing things off. He grinned at her and nodded. “Of course, we will get it all done. I ain’t gotta do my shift until later, so we got time. And, as long as I can get a butterfly this time, I’m a-okay with face painting.” Jamey stated, remarking how last year the lady refused to give him a butterfly cause ‘he was a grown man’. That ruined Jamey’s face painting experience last year.

Ronnie fought the urge to roll her eyes at Jamey’s pretend bored face. She knew he was just giving her a hard time. The young brunette found joy in just about everything. “I bet you were,” she teased him back in response, this time not holding back a playful eye roll. She knew how much Jamey enjoyed his sleep, as she did but she enjoyed the town festivities too much to sleep through them. “We do have plenty of time,” she grinned at him, “I have no doubt about that.” They’d move like the wind if they had to. “You can get whatever you want, I think you will look very wonderful with a butterfly, right here,” she reached up to poke his cheek with her pointer finger. “I’ll paint it for you if I have to.”
