I don’t know.” He rambled a bit but didn’t feel bad or apologize because with Verity he’d gotten to the point where he figured that she was used to his quirks. “Listen, listen, you can threaten me with your drinks all you like, but you forget, I’m a professional athlete. Ducking and dodging are the name of my game.” Derek rarely ever acknowledged his profession, especially since he hadn’t been able to participate in so long now. “Oof, ouch. I don’t know, guess I’m kind of over the whole, getting to know people in the small town thing. Remembered that meeting new people still isn’t really my thing. Been reading a lot.”

“I guess that might be a fair point.” Verity nodded in agreement with him, meanwhile her lips remained curved up into a small smile as despite having hung out with him plenty of times before at this point, she still found his rambling funny. “Pfft, don’t even challenge me right now, because I will one hundred percent do it when you least expect it.” She said with a small, yet serious, chuckle. Verity was nothing if not competitive, at least to some extent. “Reading?” she asked, raising a brow at him. “Wow, you really need to get out more often. You have my number. Use it, if you ever want to hang or go out for a drink or something. That is what friends are for , after all.”

River really liked Verity, he wanted to take her on a date. He’d been hurt so many times in his past by the girls he dated he was scared. But something about Verity made him less scared. “Oh yeah and why exactly is that?” He said shrugging his shoulders. He was the last person to think that anyone deserved him. He was cheated on in his first long term relationship of two years and then he was cheated on his last relation of five year so he started to think that maybe he was the problem and not the girls he dated. “I like how you make me smile, you make me laugh, you make me feel comfortable and for the first time since I moved to Fallbrook I actually feel as though there is a reason to stay here and no reason to go back to New York.”

Verity bit down her bottom lip, while she slowly lifted her hues to lock back onto him. She didn’t understand why he was being so persistent with her. Sure, the two had hit it off and she enjoyed his company very much, but that was partially why she was being so hesitant with wanting to date him. She didn’t want any of that to change, and it was bound to if they crossed that line. That, and the fact she didn’t think she deserved to. “Because you are great.” She said, fiddling a little with her fingers in her lap. “And you deserve someone who are able to appreciate that.” She would just find a way to wreck it like she always did. As he elaborated on her question, she swallowed thickly. “All of that is going to change if we start dating, River. Just trust me on that.” She told him. “Can’t we just keep doing this? Hanging out?” She suggested. “If you want to add some casual fun into the mix, I am not opposed to that. I just.. I don’t think us going out is a good idea.”

“Oh, hi.” Harper said to her roommate with a small chuckle. She really had been lost in her art and hadn’t even noticed the other approach. “I’m just doing a bit of drawing.” She explained as she gestured to her notebook. It wasn’t anything too extreme, but mostly she was just having some fun. Harper looked at her phone to check the time. “I didn’t realize what time it was.”

“I am not surprised. Seems to be the only thing you are doing.” She teased her with a small chuckle, before she went to take the seat next to her. “Oh yeah it is getting late, but I guess the days are being a bit lighter for longer cus of spring and summer and such.” She said before she pulled her shoulders into a small shrug. “Have you eaten yet?”

“How’s that going? Is Johnny one of your professors?” He asked curiously as he brought the food into the living room for them and gave her what was hers. “You work so much. Let me help out, Ver. Drop one of the jobs and I can cover whatever you need.” He offered to her, but knew the girl was like him and was going out to do things herself. “Oh, things are good. Over thirty days sober and still doing great at the news station, but I’m starting to think of retiring.”

“It is going.” She stated, which wasn’t a lie. Although now that the finish line was in sight, her motivation was lower than ever. “No, he isn’t! Which is probably a good thing, for the both of us.” She chuckled before getting a bit more comfortable in her seat. “I appreciate the offer uncle, but I am fine, really.” And she was, for the most part. Sure, some days were exhausting, but at least she wasn’t dependent on anyone. “That is great! I am proud of you!” She stated with a genuine smile on her lips. “Retiring? Already? Damn, you really are getting old.” She laughed.

“I always love doing this,” even in college, Ronnie was grateful that Easter weekend and spring break tended to overlap for her, at least enough that she was able to travel back to Fallbrook. “I mean, I know you know how crazy I get about all this but it’s just so satisfying to plant trees every year.” Ronnie had been doing this for as long as she could remember. “Do you want to go get breakfast at the Hilltop Cafe truck?” It was still earlier in the morning and Ronnie knew not many of the vendors would be opening up yet. “And then we can play the matching duck game, I don’t think I’m coordinated for much else.”

“Yeah?” Verity responded with a small snicker, before looking around them a little. The Cherry Blossom festival was probably one of her favorites out of the festivals Fallbrook had to offer. It was just overall beautiful, and she usually ended up having a good time. “Oh you don’t need to remind me.” She chuckled back at Ronnie, while shifting a little in her seat on the ground. “I am just happy you are back and made time to do this before my shift starts later.” She added with a small smile on her lips. “Uhm sure! That sounds like a plan. I love their drinks selection!” She commented, and could do with an iced coffee from all the hard work right about now. “Oh I have never been coordinated for those kinds of games, but sure! Who knows? Maybe this year I might win a price.”

Knowing he had a shift at the Flying Pig BBQ’s food truck later that evening, Jamey figured he could kill some time before then by checking out booths. Naturally, the male had smoked a joint right before leaving his apartment to better enjoy the atmosphere of the festival. What was a festival without some weed anyways, right? With eye drops in place to cover up the redness in his hazel hues, Jamey strolled through the festival grounds with amusement on his face. When his eyes saw Verity, he thought she had looked familiar to him in some way and wandered over to her. Once he was closer, he realized it was the female from a house party not long ago he met. “Yo, wasssup! I ain’t seen you since that house party.” Jamey said with a grin. “You havin’ fun or what?!” Perhaps he was too excited due to his high state, but the male was definitely having a good time.

Verity was watching some people trying to hit the cans in one of the booths, finding it amusing as they kept missing, when a familiar voice rang through the air and caused her to shift focus. Looking over her shoulder, she offered the familiar looking male a smile. “Hey you!” She said, turning herself some more to face him. “I know! I have been too busy to have any kinds of fun.” She admitted with a small shrug. “Can’t complain. It is nice to get out, and I am glad the wether is on our side.” She chuckled. “I take it you are having a fun time too?” She questioned and raised a brow at him.

“Okay, I am absolutely blown away.” Hannah turned to look at Verity as they stepped up to the Cherry Blossom Festival. “I honestly though the Winter Wonderland Celebrations were amazing,” which they still were, there was no doubt about that. “but this is utterly something else,” she slowly shook her head. “where should we start first? I take it this isn’t your first rodeo with this festival, huh?”

Verity adjusted the strap of her dress before looking up and around the are they had stepped into. “Yeah, I think this is one of my favorite festivals, if I am being honest.” She said. Not onlt because it meant it was the end of winter and got warmer, but also because the colors were beautiful. “Oh no! I used to come here every year after I moved here. I am volunteering too, but my shift isn’t until later.”

She had never liked the cold, and often wondered if she’d be better off moving somewhere that never got cold. She sat on a bench in the park and was sketching the scenery when she heard a voice nearby. “Sorry, did you say something?” Harper asked the person that she now noticed had shown up while she was not in her drawing.

Verity had been headed home from work when she had spotted her room mate seated on a bench nearby and decided to approach her. A small smile lingered on her lips as she called out, “Harper!” Before a small chuckle escaped her the second she asked her whether she had said something. “Yeah, I just called out your name.” She told her. “What are you up to?”

Spending time at the many different Fallbrook festivals had become sort of a thing for Verity and Derek at this point since they’d met at one nearly a year ago. He didn’t really enjoy going to the festivals much then, but he had come around on them and she definitely helped out with that factor. He texted her to meet him at the ‘scene of the crime’ and knew that she’d understand what he meant by that, being the first time they’d met and he’d spilled his drink on her. He waved when he saw her coming, “Hey so I was thinking we could recreate the moment we met, I have a full beer ready to spill on you if you want?” He made a really lame joke, the only kind Derek knew how to make. “Just kidding, how’ve you been Ver?”

It wasn’t hard to understand what Derek had referred to in his text, considering there was a festival going on in town. Making her way over towards the entrance where they had agreed to meet, she had some time to kill before her shift at the Cola Toss would start. A small chuckle left her lips while she approached him and he mentioned the first time they had met, which was close to a year ago now. “Don’t you think it is only fair that I am the one that get to spill my drink on you this time, if we are going there, I mean?” She teased him as she raised her brow questioningly at him. “Well, the night is still young, Cohen.” She had added before pulling her shoulders into a small shrug. “I am alright. How about you? I haven’t seen you around for a while, I almost thought you had forgotten all about me.”
