Evgeny Sedukhin - âSymphony of the sixth blast furnaceâ (1979)
âFairy godmothers start stories,â said the old woman. âI end them. Itâs not a popular job, but fortunately Iâm the only me they ever made.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean, love, if you want, I can get you out of this dungeon right now and back home by morning.â
The dungeon went deathly silent. Through the high ceiling of stone and steel, she could hear the sound of the goblins marching.
âJust like that?â
âJust like that.â
âBut the chainsââ
There was a silken hiss like falling sand. All that was left of the shackle was the angry, red welt around her ankle.
She stared. She said: âThey have my sisterââ
âNot to worry, dear,â said the old woman. âI can get her on our way out.â
âBut the goblinsââ
âCanât do a thing about it. I do whatever I want â they all hate it, but they canât stop me.â
âI signed a contractââ
âOh, love, listen to me: I donât care about contracts. I donât care about quests or bargains or deals or wishes or riddles. If you want me to get you out of this story, then youâre out, no strings attached.â
There was a trickle of rainwater somewhere in the dungeon. Every drip echoed through the gloom.
She narrowed her eyes. âIâm sorry, but I donât believe you.â
âYouâre very wise.â
âWhat do you get out of this?â
The old woman sighed and shuffled back to sit against the stone wall. âPeace of mind, maybe,â she said. âA story is a terrible thing to bear for some.â
âHow many people have you done this for?â
âHundreds.â
âThatâs a lot.â
âNo, dear. Not nearly enough.â
âNo strings attached?â
She heard the rainwater again, a distant, dark and echoing drip⊠dripâŠ
And then â âOnly one,â said the old woman. âThere is a chance that someday, youâll look back and realize that youâll never know if you couldâve done it.â
She nearly laughed. âThatâs all?â she said â and then she caught the look in the old womanâs eye.
There was something there that chilled her.
Drip⊠dripâŠ
She pulled her knees up to her chest. âThat doesnât sound too bad,â she said quietly.
âAnd for some it isnât,â said the old woman. It sounded like a very careful answer.
Drip⊠dripâŠ
âIf,â she said. âIf I say no â what happens?â
âThen you save your sister and defeat the goblins,â said the old woman. âYou become an unlikely heroine, and your story becomes the stuff of legends â or you die and your sister is lost forever. But no matter what, for the rest of your life, no matter how long that may be, you will know exactly how you did.
âItâs up to you, dear,â the old woman said. She rose stiffly and brushed the dirt from her gown. âHave you made up your mind?â

She says, âthere is something deeply broken about you.â
The world tilts. A shiver starts in the pit of your stomach. She knows. She knows. She knows, butâ What does she know?
Does she know that the person laughing over wine and fries isnât your entirety? There is a patchwork of eldritch horror sewn tightly to the backside of your skin, a kaleidoscope of little evils that you must guard from escaping. The crumpled side of a silver sedan and the deep abyss of blood. The choked wheeze of one too many last breaths and the smell of salted asphalt. The heat of your own selfish tears and the chill of that small hand in yours.
How the fuck does she know? You smile and drink your wine. She doesnât know that, she canât know that soâ
Maybe she knows you are a liar when you call yourself an optimist. Maybe she sees through you to that awful hunger that dying leaves behind in the living. Maybe she knows that your breaks are jagged. You are not sea glass, not pretty and collectible. You are a beer bottle smashed against the shore, waiting to rip open vulnerable feet. Maybe she knowsâ
You force yourself to speak. âHow so?â
âIn the best way,â she assures. Her eyes sparkle. âAll the best people are broken.â
Your soul screams, I am not a good person. There is a crevasse inside of me that I am falling into, never to be seen again. I will hurt you in the end. Evils do not always announce themselves. There are mundane ones and I am one of them.
âI like to think of it as being creative,â you say.
âTo being artists then,â she says and raises her glass for a toast.
You smile widens and you bring your glass to hers.
